The waiting game: Free-agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell met with Kubiak and Texans officials Tuesday. While the Texans would love to add McCardell to the roster, don’t expect an announcement anytime soon.
“I visited with (Keenan) on the phone earlier in the week. I sat down with him last night for a half-hour, 45 minutes, and discussed our situation and his situation,” Kubiak said Wednesday.
“I would love for him to be a part of our football team. I think he can come in here and help us. I think he’s got other options that he’s exploring, but hopefully he takes a hard look at our option because I think he could be a big help to us. We’ll see. I don’t’ think time is real important right now. If it’s going to get done, we’ll get it done and we’ll go to camp, but he knows he’s wanted and he can help us out.”
I have sometimes wondered why NFL teams are so interested in paying veteran's the minimum.
Then I half-remembered something about a clause in the CBA that says if it is the minimum it will only count $435,000 against cap, but any amount over that and it counts full. Something about "Cap Relief For Veterans" when it is a one-year contract.
IIRC, for McCardell the vet minimum would be just under a million dollars (like $850,000 or something).
Anybody know if this is how it works? Or am I making that up?
It's pretty openAndre Davis has looked good. 5th WR good? 2nd WR good? I don't know. I'm somewhat surprised he looked good The Rook Jones, the annual(it will be) try to get Mathis to play WR well, Walter, and Davis should make for some interesting camp thoughts. I think you'll even see Daniels line up there too. Trickery(former QB) or the notion of trickery may make for some interesting play choices for Kubiak and their backup TEs are fine backups. IIRC He lined up in the slot some in 06.
They only offered McCardell the vet minimum. Moulds had a 4 year $14M contract last year when they acquired him from the Bills. Big difference in price points.

FWIW Someone was nice enough to email me about McCardell. He was offerred the vet minimum from the Skins and Texans. He's rejected the Skins offer and asked for over a mil(minimum is 810k). He will take the Texans offer, where he lives, if the Skins don't raise their offer.
