Is my league abnormal (1 Viewer)

I have been clicking around these posts for the past few weeks and I am shocked by how late some teams are able to get quality running backs. My league is a 12 team league, My league starts 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 RB/WR flex, 1 K, 1 Def, 1 LB, 1 DE, 1 DT, 1 CB and 1 S.

We have 6pts for all TDs and .5 ppr for RB, 1 ppr for WR and 1.5 ppr for TE.

1 pt for 10 rush yards/recieving yards

1 pt per 25 pass yards

Yet every year we have around 25-30 Running backs taken in the first 4 rounds (out of 48 picks).

I thought this league to be highly competitive with many shark like owners, however the more I read these posts the more I think my league is abnormal.

Any other real competitve leagues finding they can get guys like S Jax in the 2nd round, Gore and Taylor in rounds 6 and 7 (catch my drift). These are all guys that will be gone by the end of round 3. (Gore probably nor before trade) They may even be gone by the end of the second.

Is my league abnormal or am I just reading about drafts that had clueless people in it

Wow, your rules are almost identical to mine. That being said, I don't think you are abnormal. Keep in mind, not everybody swims with sharks. Your actually ahead of the game by noticing it, IMO, I'd guess that your league is very tough. Also, once you are in a league for awhile, you start to learn about league tendencies. You start pushing the limits, letting QB's slide, grabbing TE's early, trying the WR/WR/WR theory, whatever. Some leagues are just scoring leagues, so a big premium is put on QB's. Some leagues(Yahoo) draft off a list, which anything goes there, because there is always lazy owners around. But the only relevant part is that you now "know" that 25-30 backs are going to go in the first 3 rounds. So your alter your draft accordingly. It's very difficult to explain to people why Manning is not a great choice in the first round, who will score almost twice what the #12 Rb will score in your league. Sometimes people need to have a "set-it-and-forget-it" QB, and are willing to pay for it. It's their comfort zone. But you are right, if you get SJax in the third round, I'd say your playing with nuns. Why do you draft a DEF, and IDPs?

Couple of things.

1) I don't know what the breakdown is on points for no points for receptions vs staggered points for them by position, but my guess is that your league is closer to an exception than the rule. Not that that's bad, I prefer staggered rec. scoring too. But that increases the value of WR and TE relative to RB.

2) I think the majority of leagues are not all-shark leagues. And I'm differentiating between "good" owners who have a good idea what to do, and shark owners who can adjust to any scoring system and who truly understand how to figure out the best moves to make. If we could characterize leagues that people on this board participate in, I'd be surprised if the majority of them were all-shark leagues, and I imagine our percentage would be much higher than it would be for the world at large.

3) That said, I think any league that you can get S. Jax in the 2nd round is probably not an all shark league (unless you have some bizarro scoring system). Doesn't mean it might not have good owners, but I just can't see 6 owners passing on SJax in the bottom of the 1st and being sharks.

my guess is the fact that you can start 3 RBs has a lot to do with it.

some leagues like RBs more than others.

mine is close to yours, there are no starting RBs (even RBBC RBs) that last past the early 4th.

Why do you draft a DEF, and IDPs?

We started to use IDP about four years ago, but we left the DEF in because we did not know how it would turn out. After the first year all but one or two of the owners loved IDP but we never really saw any reason to take out the DEF position. Its just another position to have and root for on Sunday. IMO, the more the better.

Thanks for all the insight. Most of you are correct when you say we have been together a while and we can forecast the draft a bit. With that having been said, we do have some newbs this year and it will be tough to predict what they will do.

:D If they are clever they can turn your draft upside down. Check out Mcindoe's article Drafting with Guppies for some things to expect. Guppies don't always lose.
