Lance Dunbar's role would remain intact. Joseph Randle would appear to be the guy to own if Murray were to fall to an injury. Williams has shown enough in preseason action that he may find a spot on the roster, but that is no given. This battle will continue to be waged in the Cowboys' final preseason game. Interestingly, Williams limped off the field late in the Week #3 game with cramps, and Randle exited with an apparent rib injury. Randle's contributions on special teams give him added value for Dallas.

Based on preseason stats, Williams has looked pretty good of the three backups. Not sure how he has looked in the games compared to Dunbar or Randle though. I wouldn't completely dismiss him as the other two have never been terribly impressive.

I am not doubting that you know this situation better than I thought I did, but based upon what I have read this offseason and preseason I was under the impression that Dunbar would be the next man up. I drafted him in the 3rd round of a dynasty draft with this in mind. Is your opinion based upon more than your gut?

He has looked very good in camp and in a couple of the games, His biggest problem is his pass protection, he would literally get Romo killed. The coaching staff has been public about this concern in pressers, I don't think they trust him yet. I personally believe the Cowboys are trying to find a way to keep him on the active roster, but he is not an instant star if Murray misses significant time.

Edit- I will say there is a growing population of Cowboys fans wanting him to move past Dunbar on the depth chart. That I will acknowledge. I don't think the coaches are there yet though.

My feeling is that Dallas has a specific role for Dunbar who has looked pretty good in his moments in the past. If Murray were to go down Dunbar might see a few extra carries but Randle or Williams would see quite a few carries. I just haven't seen enough of Randle or Williams to determine who would be most likely to pick up that work.

Agreed....Dunbar will catch the ball out of the back field primarily and maybe a few carries. 6-10 total touches game. That would not significantly change if Murray was out.

Ryan Williams' two-year contract with the Cowboys includes a $240K signing bonus and an average salary of $750K for 2015 and 2016.
It's a nice chunk of change for a running back who has appeared in just five NFL games since 2011. It speaks to Williams' talent, as Dallas made it a priority to keep him in the mix as DeMarco Murray preps for free agency. Williams, finally healthy after myriad knee and shoulder issues, should be monitored closely this offseason. The Star-Telegram says there's a "good chance" RFA Lance Dunbar won't be tendered. Cowboys RB Joseph Randle was arrested on drug charges in Wichita, Kan. on Wednesday morning.
Details remain unknown, but this is Randle's second arrest in the past four months. As you may recall, Randle was jailed for stealing underwear back in October. This is obviously a much more serious arrest. With DeMarco Murray's Cowboys future uncertain, Randle isn't helping himself by breaking the law.

Hmm. If Murray moves on one would think the Cowboys will draft a RB high, but this does make Ryan Williams an interesting speculative add. I don't think the Cowboys will hang their coats on Lance Dunbar.

Picked Williams up last week just to throw a dart and see how all this shakes out.
Just grabbed him at 4.10 in a rookie draft for the same reason. He'll probably end up getting dropped when I need to add a kicker in September, but he's worth grabbing late and holding onto for the next 3 or 4 months just to see what happens.

You'll have more clarity (Bloom buzz word) on him than you will a late round rookie by the time you need to cut your roster down later in the summer, so he's a perfect speculative add late in drafts.

Recent article on Williams from Dallas:

That's right. He's worth a shot with all the stiffs in Dallas these days.

forget these Cowboys RBs...the whole lot of them. Just get Dez Bryant and hope to God he stays healthy for 16 this year cause, if so, he's going to blow the doors off ppr scoring systems this year.
