Is Shockey great or is the TE pool very very thin (1 Viewer)

According to Joe, in today's daily update "He'll be be a very good fantasy TE. Again. In his six years in the league, he's been a top 7 TE four of those years and never worse than the #11 guy. "Are you kidding me? Am I wrong? It seems like he's never played an entire season. Is he that good the games he does play, or is the rest of the TE pool that weak? After Gates, the old Gonzalez, Heap, they're all hit and miss. At least the pool seems to be improving the last coupla years (Witten, Cooley, Winslow). I feel like any given week I should spin the wheel and start one Clark or another.

from May 11, 2008 daily update:"NYG - TE Shockey Reports To CampSource: ESPN.comNew York Giants TE Jeremy Shockey arrived at the team's training camp today, after threatening not to attend. Shockey is still recovering from a broken leg suffered last season and will not participate in any drills. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]What a relief, Shockey is at Minicamp to get treatment on his leg. We all make a big deal about this but the reality here is that it doesn't really matter much what Shockey does in June. Barring something big, he'll be a Giant this fall. He'll whine and make some noise and then he'll be be a very good fantasy TE. Again. In his six years in the league, he's been a top 7 TE four of those years and never worse than the #11 guy. "

Just look at the numbers. He's been good for around 60 catches and 600 yards every season. And in years where he's gotten good quarterback play he's had over 800 yards in a season. Unfortunately those types of seasons don't come very often. That might explain the low TD totals as well.

In terms of skills I don't think he's as good as Gonzo, Gates, or Winslow or even Witten but he's on that next tier of tight end in the NFL.

FWIW, Not counting 2003, he's missed 7 games in 5 years. It's just that he misses a game every year.He doesn't miss much time and gets a worse rep than he deserves.

He's usually on the injury report though and pretty banged up although he'll usually play.

Here are his fantasy finishes (per pro football reference) at the TE position

2002 – 3rd (15 games played)

2003 – 11th (9 GP)

2004 – 6th (15 GP)

2005 – 2nd (15 GP)

2006 – 7th (15 GP)

2007 – 11th (14 GP)

The TE pool is as deep as it's been in 25+ years in terms of receiving talent, and it may even be better than it was with guys like Christenson, Newsome, et al.

People forget what it was like 10 years ago when redraft leagues inevitably drafted:

Coates/Sharpe

Wycheck

Chmura

Gonzalez????

???????

Wesley Walls was a monster for a few years there too.I think Shockey is a good player, but suffers stats-wise due to the fact that he has played with othr quality targets. Guys like Gonzo and Gates are far and away the #1 weapons in the passing game on their teams. Gates and Gonzo (in his prime, anyway) are also better players than Shockey, but the numbers would be much closer if Shockey was the unquestioned focus of the Giants' passing game a la Gates/Gonzo.I also agree with the idea that mediocre QB play has limited him statistically.

Since you have Heap in the top 3 maybe this will help (Shockey has more Total Receptions, More Yards and the same TDs, in less years and less games)Player Years Games Rec Yards TDsShockey 6 83 371 4228 27Heap 7 88 339 3897 27

Shockey doesnt command that #1 spot from Eli.

I think that Shockey is a good to almost great TE on an offense where he is rarely the featured option. I think he is a highly skilled athlete. I also believe his D-Bag personality reflects poorly on how he's perceived in the FF community. I'd love to have him on my teams but he's always drafted too high because of his high profile and flamboyant manner.
