Is the show Six Feet Under worth getting into? (1 Viewer)

Looking for a new show. Heard good things about it but it seems a bit too soap opera like.

Tell me about it.

I liked it. Very different then pretty much every other show I have seen so it's tough to compare. In terms of entertainment I would put it somewhere between The Wire and Mad Men.

Good enough. Pilot recording! Thx!

eta: will probably ditch The Following to fit this in our schedule.

Hell yes. And when you make it all the way through, it has the best series finale ever!
So true. Rare that a finale lives up to expectations for a long-running popular show, probably because expectations are unrealistic, but man do they nail it. How is it that HBO made this, the Wire, the Sopranos, the Life and Times of Tim, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex and the City and Boardwalk Empire, when so much of the TV landscape is pure crap? They don't always hit home runs, but they have more than their share of all-time classic shows.

Man, if I could replace The Following with something as good as Six Feet Under that I'd never seen before, it would be so awesome.

I still haven't seen:

Six Feet Under

The Wire

Deadwood

Boardwalk Empire

The Sopranos

Just got HBO GO, so I plan on changing that. Which do you guys recommend starting with?

wow, hard to go wrong here. Depends on what you like I guess.

If you like police dramas start with The Wire

If you like westerns, start with Deadwood

If you like mafia stuff, start with Soprano's

You have have a ton of seasons worth of great TV to enjoy. Have fun!

Since you're from NJ, you should certainly start with The Sopranos.

Yeah, Six Feet Under is a top 5 all-time show for me. Definitely worth the watch. It's very dark, but very thought-provoking in a way that very few shows or movies manage to pull off.

I assume anyone who would bother to open the thread would tell you that it is.
We stopped watching after 2 or 3 seasons. Story line was just too boring for us. Seemed very slow for our liking.
Interesting. I've rarely heard someone say they didn't like the show. I guess if you're looking for action/adventure it's not the show for you. I always thought they did an amazing job writing for all of the main characters in a really compelling way. Each of them goes through a lot of interesting stuff. And there are a lot of laughs.

If I could nitpick, I'd say

David getting carjacked and his panic attacks afterward
were a bit much. But overall, brilliant show. The ending was ridiculously good.

Great show, specatcular ending. Just tried to watch the final six minutes again at work. Big mistake.

Just decided to check this show out, I'm downloading the first 4 episodes on HBO on Demand as I post this. I've never heard anything other than good things about it, really looking forward to it.

As with many (if not most) successful HBO series, this one started great, with a great idea and good acting, but was dragged out way too long imo. The show was brutal after season 2. The famous montage ending (a long scene - several minutes at the end of the last episode), was a great scene and a truly inspired piece of cinematography, but the last season was otherwise terrible.

In what universe is Deadwood better than the Sopranos.

Oh look, it's a crusty guy using curse words constantly!!!!11!
The Sopranos is great but I prefer Deadwood.

And using foul language as a way to diminish Deadwood while touting the Sopranos makes zero sense.

No, The Sopranos was more than Tony swearing at whooo-ahhs.

I've only seen about 10 episodes of The Sopranos and just didn't have any interest in seeing more. Not a very informed opinion, but I liked Deadwood much more from the little bit I saw.

If you don't want to see any more, that's your right.

I saw every episode of Deadwood. Good show, but supremely overrated IMO.

I wouldn't mind watching the rest. It was a few years ago. I didn't hate it. I just didn't like it enough that I just had to keep watching, like other great shows.I always meant to get back around to it.Then video stores went out of business and Netflix split services and I just never did.

Not much. I said Sopranos was great but I just prefer Deadwood.

I might reboot 6 feet under.

Prob my all time favorite show
I re-watched it start to finish with my wife a couple years ago. So glad I did. My wife loved it too. Watching it with her even when I knew what would happen didn't change a thing. And Tiger is right; the final episode was incredible. Everything you didn't get from the final Sopranos - closure.
