Is the situation involving Deion Branch a growing trend (1 Viewer)

Are we to expect similar situations involving other players in the future? Not just WR's but RB's, TE's and QB's? It used to be nobody sat out that long. Everyone eventually signed. Sure there was your rare Errict Rhett who sat out, but that was the exception. Will this be a growing trend or is Deion just another Errict Rhett among the many who do/will skip the boycott and sign or report to their teams?

growing trend where players are trying effect change. just this year, I think of Porter, Branch, and Stallworth, among others.

i am waiting for it to be a big time qb or rb.

I hate how so many of these holdouts and trade demands are done by WR's..... WR's nowadays (with some exceptions) are prima-donna, failed-at-basketball-so-I'll-try-football jerks. They think they ahve so much power.... and it's sickening. Especially since a WR is the LEAST tough player on the football field, again with a few exceptions like Hines Ward

Javon Walker??? How quickly people foregt. His father was going to the press saying trade him because his son would never play.

it wouldnt be a trend if players were penalized for not honoring contracts
Well, if Deion sits out until week 10, he'll have cost himself over $1m in fines & forfeited game checks, so it is not totally with penalty. Not sure there is much else you can do to a player.IMO, however, if Branch hold out until week 10 he is ####ed, as I have no doubt that Brady & the Pats offense will be humming along even without him. All the talk when he hits FA will then be that he is a product of the Pats system and will not be as good on another team, thus lowering his value. If Givens lays an egg in TEN (highly possible given that O) it will only bolster this viewpoint.

It's high stakes gambling.

Players can be cut at any time, so that is why they demand contracts with upfront money. For the franchise, that is a gamble, because the player may or may not pan out, and if he doesn't, the money is out the window. For the player, it is a gamble, because if he outperforms his contract, the team can insist he fulfill his contract.

The player's only option is to withhold his services. The club can then insist he play, and fine him or withhold his paycheck if he doesn't.

Where players make a mistake, in my opinion, is in letting this become personal (same thing is true for franchises). They ought to make a business decision, and keep emotion out of it.

I'm not sure it is a growing trend, yet. But there is not doubt the growth of salaries, year on year, favors the players...and therefore makes their gambling odds slightly better.
