Is there a football version of baseball's Hustle Index? (1 Viewer)

This article is about a way to measure hustle in baseball:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=18168

What you do is time a hitter on how long it takes for him to hustle to first base on an infield hit. Then you time him on how long it takes for him to get to first base on a ground ball out to third or shortstop. Collect a lot of data points in both cases, and a hustle index emerges. He cannot know he will be out on a ground ball to third, and he cannot know he'll be safe on an infield hit. So the difference in sprint times gives us insight into his mindset - how much he is willing to hustle.

A hustle index might be a way to distinguish between two players of similar skill.

Can you think of a way to develop a Hustle Index for football?

There won't be a one size fits all number like baseball but if you're doing it strictly for WRs, TEs and RBs, willingness to block can be a good indicator. How much that matters I don't know but it's a good place to start.

For defensive guys, I think you can watch how often they run to the ball carrier even if he isn't likely to make the tackle.
