Is this shady? re: Keeper League (1 Viewer)

Ok, I caught on with my main money league (12 team, standard-non ppr) about 4 years ago. It was always a redraft league until this past season where we were going to convert it to a keeper (keep up to FOUR players). I have always been in nothing but redraft leagues so I was excited that we were switching it up a bit.

Well the draft is coming up this weekend and out of the blue we get a mass text from the commish (who has one of the weaker squads) saying that ESPN doesn't have a salary cap option so we're not going to be rolling with the keeper league?

I was looking forward to hanging onto 4 of my guys, now all of a sudden....days before the draft, the script flips on us.

Should I be pissed about this?

League rules and format trump the interface. The commish can find a different and more accommodating fantasy service and keep the format.

well if a 11 of the 12 want it to be a keeper then tell the commish to kick rocks and figure out how to draft better

Even if this is true, why can't everyone just agree to draft their 4 guys in the first 4 rounds of the draft as agreed on before the draft and go from there? It wouldn't affect the draft order as there are 4 keepers. This is your commish being a bit of a knob end in my eyes!

I think the issue is they are trying to do a salary cap type league. ESPN allows you to do standard keepers.

OP, see if someone in the league has enough basic Excel experience to set up some simple spreadsheets to handle salary cap info.

When was it changed to a keeper league? At last seasons draft? During the season? This past offseason
this is the question

if this was an off season decision then really it is no harm no foul, although i would still wonder if it was the RIGHT decision.

if your roster decisions last season were based on the idea of keeping then it is shady

Maybe I'm thick, but why is he trying to change it to a salary cap league instead of a straight keeper? I know for a fact that ESPN allows this.

Summary and thoughts:

  1. League rules trump site
  2. There are so many sites to choose from, pick one that does what you want
  3. If this decision was made during the season last year, then people made waiver and trade moves based on this expectation, that's not something that should be changed now
  4. If the decision was made during the off-season you could ask for a league vote to settle the matter, it seems like something that should be a league decision and not a commissioner one

changing sites can be a giant PITA, i think the commish dropped the ball BIG TIME by not verifying the current site could do what the league wanted to do setup-wise... i do think you should be looking for another site and keep the rules that were established months ago.

if your commish isn't willing to do the legwork, then i'd say you take the initiative and find a site that will work for everyone

I appreciate the responses guys.....

This was decided on the day of the draft LAST YEAR. That was when the commish told us that we were drafting for a keeper format THIS year. Never did I hear talk of there being a salary cap until I received that text. Just seems real sketch to me. Can't help but to think if the commish had a decent squad it would have stayed put.

We draft this Saturday. Not really sure how loud to voice my opinion. lol I'm sure other guys in the league will feel the same though.

if it was announced at last year's draft, i'd make a stink

it should have been discussed then if it was a salary league or not

Why is he trying to make the argument that it needs to be a salary cap league? Was that ever mentioned before? Salary cap and keeper are entirely different formats.

See that's what I thought too. This was going to be my first go round with a keeper league but the salary cap talk was all news to me when it came up a few nights ago.

What's the stance I should take on this here come draft day boys?

Im confused. Last year did you have a draft or an auction? How would he assign values to your current keepers? He clearly is making up #### on the fly so Id definitely say something and see how he stammers.

Yes, the whole "salary cap" thing doesn't make much sense. First I'd probably send out an email confirming what the league agreed to do (keep 4 league), and that if that is correct that ESPN can support it and setting a salary cap isn't needed.

Beyond that, if you decided in advance that this year would be a keeper, yes you need to stick with it unless there is a tremendous reason not to. I very much would alter my draft plans if I knew the players would be eligible to be keepers. Heck, just changing our starting lineup drastically in what was already a keep 4 league, I blew up my roster to situate myself well for the future years with the new lineup at the possible expense of that year. (Though I still won the championship that year anyway ;) ).

Is this the Gossip Pool? Just talk to the guy and figure out what's going on and get it resolved.
There always has to be at least ONE of these guys right? LOL

Thanks again for the feedback. I obviously just came on here for some advice on the situation since I'm unfamiliar with the whole format and didn't even know for sure if I had a legitimate gripe.

I'd say your gripe is pretty legitimate. If the rules were in place before last season's draft, then you can't change things after the fact; managers would have already made a full season's worth of decisions based on that.

It'll be a little more work, but there's tons of tools you can use out there to do your draft outside of ESPN and then manually add them later. We've run into this with keeper leagues at Yahoo before they had some of that functionality and we just did our draft in Google Drive. Quick, easy, and relatively painless.

So keeper status was agreed to BEFORE last year's draft and making it a salary cap league was NEVER discussed or agreed to?

Yes, that is shady and he should be called to the mat for it. As someone else posted, you simply put the kept players on rosters with the first so many rounds of the draft and then start picking for real. No biggie.

If that is all true - decision for keepers was made before you drafted last year - the commish may not change it now. Even with a league vote in favor of now changing to an auction league and doing away with keepers, the change should take place next year. The commish doing this two days before the draft and without a vote at all? Ludicrous. If it goes down this way, I'd be looking for a new league because I would no longer respect/trust the commish.

Basically, it should not matter if ESPN allows caps. You all have your keepers, and so let everyone keep for this year, and spend the offseason looking for a league that will let you do caps. You managers, and the Commish need a year of just a straight keeper league anyway. I would argue that this commish can't handle the salary cap thing if he can't even verify what the League Management software can do

No, you shouldn't be pissed. We all play this game to have the rules changed on a moment's notice.

Kick his ####.
