We all remember what we did on Columbus Day weekend last year.  I always go somewhere for Washington Birthday weekend too.   MLK day falls into that camp of what are federal holidays which most people outside of government do not get off and is odd that people would proclaim it that weekend.  I just honestly have never heard it done for MLK day or Columbus day or Washington Birthday.

I know it's been a while since we had to sit through local TV commercials for furniture shops and car dealerships and whatnot, but if you remember them I'm pretty sure the phrase "President's day weekend" will ring a bell.

Also, it's in the middle of January right after two other holidays.  If it fell in the middle of summer I bet you'd hear it referred to that way all the time because people would travel for it. This just seems like a weird thing to get hung up on :shrug:

 
Just so people aren't caught unaware, I've heard this coming weekend referred to numerous times as "Inauguration weekend" here in the D.C. area.  So if something crazy happens on Sunday, you're prepared for that now.

Nver heard it referred to as MLK weekend.

I'm guessing because it comes so close after the holidays that it's not a big travel weekend, like Memorial Day or Labor Day.

However, because it is a holiday monday, I am guessing that 3-day weekend has been a weekend, and thus MLK weekend all along.

It comes across as an attempt to make a marginally offensive comment into something bigger than it actually was to rationalize protesting Trump's inauguration.  This does not even break the top 100 offensive things that Trump has said.

Right, but unfortunately we're all desensitized to his vulgarities.

Compare the level of the "binders of women" comments Romney made and if Trump had said the same thing.  That gaff, which was severely damaging to Romney, wouldn't hit the top 500 for Trump.

"Binders of women" was good for a few laughs but I don't really think that was too damaging to Romney's campaign.  "47%" probably was a lot more damaging.  But yeah, something like "47%" would do nothing to Trump if he said it.  To me that's still one of the most puzzling things about this election.

You can say this about any city. You can probably say it about anywhere. 

Atlanta is a fine city and actually up and coming from an economic standpoint. Trump was talking out of his ###. Enough exists for his supporters to try and paint Atlanta in a bad light but honestly it's tone deaf and borderline racist. 

As others have done, compare it to Milwaukee or other Midwest cities who Trump has promoted. 

 
I can't decide if I should be impressed by Trump's talent/strategy with these occurrences or not.

The sheer head on ####'em all attitude, the ability to create another cluster so that people don't really have time to fully address the last cluster.. and another and another.  Simply overwhelms our capacity to comprehend the issues as they come.  

What the hell did he say/do?  He can't be that stupid, wait he just walked it back.  Hold on now he is doubling down.  Now he doesn't mean it again.. what is going on?  And before any clarity or closure is achieved.. he does it again.  Rinse and repeat.

Brilliant.. or overwhelmingly stupid.  I really can't tell sometimes.   :ph34r:

Lol Republicans love pointing to this even though the parties flipped between then and now. Lincoln would be a modern day Democrat if anything. Perhaps LaPage should reread his history book although he just says stupid #### all the time.

I totally agree.  The fact that it was MLK weekend should not have entered into the dustup whatsoever.

Really, tho, is there more 'Trump is racist' stuff out there from the MSM (or the Left or whomever), or is there more outrage from non-liberals that there is a racial element here? Did a liberal start this thread?  Are the usual liberal suspects in here calling for his racist head?

My looney liberal Facebook feed isn't being lit up with Trump is Racist memes.  At all.  Just the usual 'Trump is calling THIS guy all talk?  LOL' stuff any sane person might be saying.  

Just one little bit of anecdotal evidence.  Check with MOP, his immediate surroundings are a better guage, I have heard.

Best thing about this is that it caused a couple of people to share this great Roger Ebert review of Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, which has to be one of the best owns of all time.

You may think to yourself that it's pretty easy to own a crappy movie like that, and it is, but you are underestimating the brilliance of Roger Ebert.

I won't argue if the modern Republican party wants to associate itself with Lincoln. But I will point out that it's a wee bit hypocritical for LePage to be saying "Check your history" followed immediately by "Lincoln freed the slaves".

Lincoln didn't free the slaves. They weren't freed until after Lincoln was killed.
 
Also, LePage said that Rutheford B. Hayes "fought against Jim Crow laws", when in fact it was the Hayes/Tilden compromise which allowed Jim Crow laws to proliferate in the first place.
