It's Been a While Since We Had a Music Draft (1 Viewer)

They used to be pretty regular occurrence but not so much lately. Themed mixtape drafts ought to be a lot easier than they used to be with the advent of services like Spotify. We used to have pages of tech support related posts around creating the mixes; it's pretty much drag and drop these days.

Is anybody else interested or have music drafts jumped the proverbial shark? No judging because this is art, not figure skating. We've done the traditional decades, although 2005-2014 might be interesting. Loosely themed drafts (e.g. the soft rock draft) are another possibility.

Genre themed mixtape: Punk, Dance, Yacht Rock, Covers, Country, Prog, your suggestion here

Era mixtape: 2005-2014 or we could repeat one we've done already

"Songs about..." mixtape:

DID Album draft: Theme or era TBD

Draft a band: We've done this before and the results were interesting although I can't find them via search.

Some combination of the above or something completely different

Most people hate my more unstructured drafts, but what about a "YOUR OWN THEME HERE" mixtape draft. In other words, your mixtape needs a theme (maybe it's a break-up tape, maybe it's a make-out tape, maybe it's dedicated to the Summer of 1997, or Manchester, or whatever), but it's your own choice. Not just "songs I really like."

:blackdot:

The more the theme is the same/similar for everyone, the more you have the intrigue of sniping and learning more music within that genre/style IMO

Yeah, that was the problem with the previous "songs about..." mixtape draft. Everybody was completely off on their own. You could pretty much post your mix as soon as you figured it out because there was minimal risk of sniping.

How about something like a song cycle about different phases of a person's life? e.g. birth, childhood, adolescence..., growing old, death.

I was thinking of trying a non-top 10 or non-top 20 song draft. Sort of a "deep cuts" draft. Any genre, whatever, but you couldn't draft any songs that had ever charted in the weekly top 10, top 20 whatever. Obviously this limits the time frame to songs produced while there have been charts. I haven't thought too much about how compelling/interesting a draft like that would be, or how tough it would be to verify whether a song charted or not.

I'm in regardless, but it might be interesting to explore genres that past drafts have ignored for the most part: bluegrass, country, folk, jazz. Just a thought...would be fun to have a category or two that hasn't been addressed in past drafts.

I have been kicking around a "Rock Song Deconstruction" draft for a few years now. I did conceive of it being judged TimDraft-style ... but I figured it would be a lot easier to judge than some things have proved to be (e.g. movies, TV series, etc.).

The basic idea would be that we'd mentally break individual rock songs down into their components, and draft individual songs in categories such as:

Best Song with Distinct Movements (distinct changes in meter, tempo, instrumentation, etc.)

Best Song not in 4/4 Time

Best Lead Vocals

Best Backing Vocals (ensemble, not necessarily by one person)

Best Harmonizing Vocals

Best Rhythm Guitar (throughout the song)

Best One-Off Guitar RIff

Best Guitar Solo

Best Bassline (throughout the song)

Best One-Off Bass RIff

Best Bass Solo

Best Keyboard/Piano Line (throughout the song)

Best One-Off Keyboard/Piano "RIff"

Best Keyboard/Piano Solo

Best Drum Beat (throughout the song)

Best Drum Fills

Best Use of Bass Drum(s)

Best Use of Snare

Best Use of Toms

Best Use of Hi-Hat

Best Use of Cymbals

Best Use of Brass

Best Use of Woodwinds

Best Use of Strings

Best Use of Alternative Stringed Instrument (banjo, sitar, oud, harp, balalaika, etc.)

Best Use of Alternative Percussion Instrument (glockenspiel, clavinet, bells, etc.)

Best Use of Wildcard Instrument (not accounted for in another category)

Very cool- but, out.

Gonna need more cowbell.

I actually proposed something similar to some folks at work but it was like a weekly trivia game where someone would create a playlist and you would have to figure out from the list what the "answer" was and how the songs connected to that answer. It was entertaining for a few weeks and then we lost interest. I think it could work with some tweaking.

love this idea but if one out two of your must have songs get sniped, you are screwed

I'd be interested in getting back into these things.

I like Groovus's idea of deep tracks - charting singles but outside the top 20 or so.

Doug has a motherlode of ideas there, but might be too much brainpower involved for me.

A few years ago, John Madden's Lunchbox mentioned a Billboard #1 Albums draft. Not a bad idea since it would cover a whole bunch of eras and genres.

It wasn't an issue when we did this the last time

For me, the best part of music drafts is hearing stuff I haven't heard before. I'm not a fan of the #1 albums idea for this reason. I may not have heard every album but I've probably heard of them.

It's my thread, so I'm going to keep trying to steer things toward a mix of songs. It's so easy now to put together 45-60 min mix of songs and even easier to listen to it. The deep tracks concept serves this purpose, but so do some others mentioned so far.

Agreed

:D

Even though I threw a lot of specific categories out there, it could toned down or loosened up in any number of ways.
The word "best" implies some judging even when it's used in the context of balalaika solos. Waiting months for judges' writeups is my least favorite part of Timdrafts.

That's highly unlikely to happen, don't you think? I suppose my idea wouldn't need to be a draft at all. It would just be guys putting together a mixtape that kind of reflects a theme. So I get that criticism.

But I think the categories stuff is what really causes the sniping and worse (for me at least) the focus on stuff that I expect.
