It's hard rooting for team you know is doomed (1 Viewer)

Venting my spleen this morning, please indulge me for a moment. I'm a Ravens fan and the past few seasons have been pretty cool getting to watch Lamarvelous up close and personal every week. He is exciting, talented and a once in a generation player and the fact that he plays for the team I root for is awesome. This season he has reached an even higher level of play, one where the Mannings, Bradys and Brees' of the NFL once roamed. Problem is...the Ravens are destined to lose in the playoffs again, it's a near certainty. Their defense against the pass is atrocious, I'm talking like puke inducingly bad. And as good as the offense is there is no way their defense is going to hold up against the best teams in the post season. So i'm kind of bummed even with the big division win last night cuz the team is Dead Man Walking at this point.

Any of y'use ever feel that way and can anyone talk me off my ledge? All thoughts and comments welcome.

No, you are almost certainly not going anywhere and are right to feel as though it's all a bit futile.

A metaphor for life really. Just enjoy the ride and take comfort in the fact that;

1. 97% of teams in the league are also going to fail
2. At least you'll be in the playoffs and have a theoretical chance
3. You don't know for absolute certain so there's always a slither of hope you might overcome the huge deficiencies
4. You'll probably be good again next year and will be able to improve the areas of weakness off season
5. You aren't paying Deshaun Watson hundreds of millions of dollars to be bad and injured

This brought a smile to my face. Thanks!

Nah. I don't believe in this "we can't go anywhere in the playoffs" nonsense. There is way too much randomness in the game to just say you can't win. Make the playoffs. Win four games. Done. Is it likely? No. But of all the teams, it's more likely to happen for you than for the vast majority of them.

I truly believe the Ravens are gonna get one with Lamar at QB. He's playing out of his mind this year.

And as a Chiefs fan, we've been extremely fortunate against your team. But we are talking one play here, or one play there. At some point THAT play is gonna go the Ravens way. And it may be this year.

I know it sucks and for 50 years of my life what you are feeling was the way of my Chiefs. I can't tell you how many **** punches I received from the terrible late 70's and early 80's to the Marty failures and then the Vermeil failures and a few turds in between.

But when it comes it is sweet. It may happen for you at the expense of my Chiefs, but that's OK. I like Lamar. I like Josh Allen. If either of those guys won it instead of Mahomes I'd be cool with it.

Also I would add, you win games by scoring more points than your opponent scores. You're doing that 70% of the time. And averaging 6.5 more points per game than your opponents. It's the comparison of the two numbers, not one number or the other alone. But I know, some people believe in "defense wins championships". Tell that to ... well, almost every Super Bowl winner of the last 20 years.

I support the Steelers (and have a non-permitted soft spot for the Ravens and especially Lamar...) and can therefore say: there is no worse fate in the NFL than just barely slipping into the playoffs and knowing you're going to get knocked out immediately anyway. Like the Steelers of the last 15 years. Never a top draft pick and never the trophy.

I am rolling my eyes at this thread and don’t feel sorry for Ravens fans. At all. The team is winning and Lamar has developed into a good passer and is so exciting to watch. Try being a Raider fan. For the last 20 years, our seasons have been over before Halloween almost every year and the organization is a joke.

I think there are a lot of fans out there that would trade positions with you.

I agree with others. Just because the defense is bad doesn't mean you can't win a title. Sometimes defenses are able to put together good games or good runs at the right time, and the Ravens can hang with anyone in a shoot out this year.

At least you have the annual opportunity to blow top draft picks.

Wait - I thought I was supposed to be the Ravens' pessimist on this board (there's only like 4 of us here in total, but still)

I love ya, Joe, but have you ever gone into some of the team threads for franchises that have struggled for a while? I don't think you're gonna get much sympathy for Baltimore, amigo.

The Ravens' pass D has been bad. I think they've been snakebit a little with injuries and their top 3 2023 coaches leaving - not to mention collective amnesia by the entire group on how to reel in an interception thrown RIGHT TO THEM. I thought there'd be some adjustments, but didn't expect it to take this long.

Regardless, who would you favor over them if the AFC playoffs started now? KC, of course. Buffalo, who's playing better after Baltimore smoked them earlier? The Bengals getting in (I still think they will) terrifies me and should terrify every other team who makes the tournament. LAC seems to have gotten their **** together and could be a load.

It's ok to be frustrated. You saw my post after the Cleveland debacle but, for the most part, I'm enjoying the ride. The most exciting player I've ever seen is Barry Sanders. In second is Lamar Jackson.

I’m not getting the gloom and doom by the OP. The team is winning and is almost certainly gping to the playoffs where anything can happen.

The pass D may be atrocious in your eyes but it could improve in the 2nd half of the season. Pretty much every team has a weakness that can be exploited.

Also you never know when or where the injury bug will hit next. A serious injury to a key player could dramatically affect the playoffs.

In short, just enjoy the win last night and let the rest of the season and postseason play out

I would think the worst part of being a Ravens fan is having lost to both the Raiders and Browns.

Seriously, WTH?

GO RAIDERS!!!!

No, not at all. Never felt that way. [J/K ... Viking fan unfamiliar with any other type of feeling for 40 years]

:jawdrop:

Hey you guys remember when Friday threads were a thing? Those were some good times.

@Joe Schmo

To find a season comparable to what Lamar is having, we have to go back to Mahomes with Tyreek or peak Rodgers. It’s as good as the regular season apex of Brady or Peyton. Enjoy it for what it is.

As for the atrocious back end, the Lions made the NFCCG with some of the worst corners in the league. Still came close to making their first ever SB.

I don’t think it’s fixable in 2024, but Lamar & King Henry are such incredible players it may not matter.

Also, as you may have noticed, there are approximately 28-29 fan bases that would like to throat punch you for suggesting you’re going through it rn.

Not that I’m advocating violence as a solution outside the white lines.

I mean they really only have to get past the Chiefs (who are not the juggernaut on offense anymore) or maybe Buffalo (who is beatable) in the post-season. The rest of the AFC contenders are not likely to be favored against the Ravens right now. The old adage that defenses win championships is true much of the time, but not all of the time.

Cowboys fan here. Glad to see someone else in misery. I'll swap you Dak for Lamar. At least your D can stop the run.
:wall:

There is this team from NJ that I root for. They gave this bum $160 Million and then refused to pay their best player peanuts and let him walk to their arch rivals. Now he is dominating the NFL and will beat us twice a year until he retires.

Yeah, hold my Classic Coke…

The misery never ends for Raider fans. Losses pile up all season followed by stupid coaching and personnel moves all offseason.

That's how I feel rooting for my dynasty team. Best team but I know I'm going to get ****ed in the playoffs every year.

OP is Bronco fan in 1997. “We have an awesome QB but we will never win the big one”. This is true…until it isn’t.

I think this is a good example of why the unexpected good seasons are the best. As a Vikings fan, this is one of those seasons. I assumed we were doomed once McCarthy went down but it’s been pleasantly awesome and if we lose in round one it won’t be a big deal because it’s all gravy at this point.

The bolded isn't true. The Ravens defense in 2012/2013 was in the bottom half of the league (I think way down in the 20s). They kept trotting Lewis & Reed out there when both were washed out. Their offense - and some luck - won that SB for them.

The year before was a better team, and Cundiff/Evans gakked it up. They would have crushed the Giants.

Huh? I’m a fan every year. My comment is that, unlike 1998 and 2009 where my expectations were sky high and I’m nervous every game, this season is pleasant from a viewing standpoint bc my expectations are low.

I don’t know how the above makes me a fair weather fan. A fan with a series of brutal past gut punches, yes, but like a good dv victim I show up every time hoping for the best.
