It's Official - Verizon FIOS in, DirecTV out (1 Viewer)

Not thrilled with DirecTV anyway. Have a pretty big install - 2 HD TV's, 8 others. This was the first year I didn't do Sunday Ticket. We started going to Fox Sports Bar for games most weekends anyway - didn't make sense. FIOS just installed in my neighborhood. Got the full package, Triple Play Ultimate. Bundled local and long distance phone, HD TV, 35MB Internet (fastest available here), and all of their channels. Still get NFL Network and Red Zone - so I'm good on Thursdays/Saturdays. Play the ponies, and they have TVG and HRTV, so that's cool. Includes unlimited On Demand.

Kicker for me was getting up to 4 laptops with Verizon Wireless access without any cards or monthly fee. Included in the package. I had one before and it was $50+ per month. I travel for work (company doesn't provide air cards) and have 2 kids in college so this is huge.

Faster, better technology, save a lot of money each month. And I get the Dish off of my roof. Only downside we can think of is that we only get Pacific time zone, where with DirecTV we get the East Coast feed on some channels 3 hours earlier. But not that big of a deal. Install in 2 weeks - can't wait. Oh, and get to get rid of Time Warner for Internet - even better. That company suxors..

Judge Smails, how do you like FIOS? Did you get set up with Phone, Internet and TV? I ask because I am a sales rep for Verizon's FIOS and specifically market for businesses as well as residential. I'm the guy who can compare your existing service and set you up with service, promos, gift cards, etc. (if available in your area). I have DirecTV myself, but only because FIOS is not available in my area....yet.

If anyone has questions about FIOS, please feel free to ask.

Current availability (this does not guarantee service is available in your area though): California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

Yep, I have the triple play package with fastest internet possible. Like pretty much everything about it, though the DVR is not as user friendly as what I had before. Had DirecTV for 10 years until FIOS was installed in our neighborhood.

I switched from DirecTV to Fios last year. Its a better service IMO, but the price is killing me. Im paying about $170 per month for internet and TV package, and the only premium movie channel I have is HBO. I say "about $170" because the damn bill changes every other month or so it seems. Some months its around $160, others up to $175. WTF.

With DirecTV, I was paying $150 a month for internet plus the mack-daddy TV package that had every pay channel (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, The Movie Channel, etc etc). My DirecTV bill was within $2 or $3 dollars every month and never fluctuated like Fios does. One thing I liked about DirecTV better was the ability to add premium movie channels ala carte. With Fios, you have to get them in a package (i.e. I cant add just Showtime, I have to get a package with other movie channels in it)

Im ---> <--- this close to going back to DirecTV even though I HATE HATE HATE the user interface of their guide/dvr.

Wingnut, $160-170 for TV and Internet seems awfully high, even with the ultimate TV package. I can look up your account and see what you are eligible for to get that total down. Send me an email with your billing phone number to jhaseley@tmg1.net

I WISH THEY would figure out their government bull#### so I can get Verizon in my area. It's not much cheaper than comcast but I pay a ton for all 3. More than 170.... :bag:

It's not any better than Comcast, except for maybe the more modern guide. I switched to FiOS when we built our new house and regretted it. If it wasn't such a pia to switch, I probably would've switched back. FiOS is nice, but it's over-hyped, IMO.We're paying $245 for all 3 services, but have about $100 of that wrapped up in all the extra nonsense - 5 boxes, movies, etc. It's like lighting money on fire, but try convincing the wife/kids of that is useless.

I'm in the same boat and I don't even have HBO (I do have the multi-room DVR so maybe that evens things up). I've called a few times trying to get the bill down and don't generally have any luck. I like FIOS but $170 a month is getting a bit rich for TV, Internet and a phone I don't use.

Good luck with Verizon FIOS Customer service. If you call for ANYTHING, expect to be transfered 10 times and get an answer 1-2 hours later.

Hmmm... I've never had that problem. It's rare that the first person I talk to doesn't answer my question but I normally call for billing, not technical.

You forgot the part where you get disconnected and have to call back and start over a couple of times. Verizon is the most disorganized company in existance today. No one knows what anyone else does. I had to move some FIOS lines from a reseller back to Verizon. It was as if they created this new group to handle it and stuck them in a closet answering calls. Tried my gov't rep, who does know what she is doing, but she had no idea who those people were and couldn't find out and she works there. It was amazing. Every number I called, no one knew who those people were. She also wasn't allowed to do the move. It had to be those clowns. It took almost a month to get the lines moved.FIOS is great though. When it breaks it is fixed before I even get the number dialed for service. Whoever is at the top if this dysfunctional company really needs to be fired.

I've had FiOS for almost two years and like it very much. I'm in the DC suburbs of MD. It has been reliable (no outages at all other than a general power outage during a big snow storm in winter 2010) and the internet speed is very good. I have the Triple Play and have had no complaints with the phone service. I switched from Comcast, though, not DirectTV.My only complaint is customer service. I've had some minor issues with equipment (remotes mostly) andits next to impossible to get a house call to resolve these issues. They all seem to want to handle them over the phone or on-line. I can't get my "whole house DVR" to work properly, but can't get someone out to try to fix it. That is one thing that Comcast did very well.

Fact
Not true. I signed up for an online promotion as a new customer for 3 free months of HBO/Cinemax. Of course first bill and they charged me for 2 months of HBO/Cinemax. Called up and talked to a VERY nice lady. Got through right away. She didnt see that promotion being offered and after a bit of back and forth discussion she gave me credit for 2 months plus noted my account for the 3rd month. Month 3 rolls in and I was charged again. Talked to another very nice lady who despite again not seeing that promotion being offered, read the notes by the first CSR and gave me the final month credit. Bit of a hassel but it worked out in the end and the answering time was MUCH quicker than Directv IMO.

I have to catch up with you and talk Jeff, I live in DE and my wife and I have been fed up with Comcast these past few months and are looking to move. We already have phone and internet with Verizon, but TV through Comcast since Fios wasn't available when we moved in 5 years ago. I'm 99% sure it is now, but we've been too lazy to research it.

Verizon is notorious for this -- almost cancelled my cell service with them because of these type of issues

Here's my opinion of Time Warner, Directv, Fios all of which Ive had at one time in my life:

Time Warner: Customer Svc- awful, prices- ridiculously expensive, tech support- decent, installation- excellent

Directv: Customer Svc- AWESOME (always give away free stuff), prices- awesome, tech support- horrible (they are idios), installation- the absolute worst thing Ive ever experienced in my life

Fios: Customer Svc- bad, prices- after promo period probably a little high, tech support- decent, installation- awesome!

I WISH THEY would figure out their government bull#### so I can get Verizon in my area. It's not much cheaper than comcast but I pay a ton for all 3. More than 170.... :bag:
They just announced that they're in my town, but when I called to set it up my address isnt ready yet... figures. I hate Time Warner so much that the first day FIOS is available at my address I will have it ordered. I check pretty much every 3 days.TW is around $170 for the TV/Internet/Phone without ANY pay channels, most of the time the sports channels flicker and make robot noises despite having the line replaced 2x and the internet has cut out on me during two important webinars and a fantasy draft. Not to mention I can't even get NFL network. TWC can shove their garbage product up their ###. I thought about DirecTV but I watched a yankee game at a bar one time and once it started raining the game went away for 15 mins... I couldn't deal with that. If not for that I'd already have them.

I also have cell svc thru Verizon and my bill has been the same exact amt (give or take) for like 4 years now. Never an issue, but I do read horror stories online, so I guess Ive been lucky.

The dish has to be aligned perfectly. If you get a good installation guy (rare) rain fade is almost a non0issue. I had poor installation and had rain fade on and off for a few years. Finally had a guy come out and reallign the dish and never had rain fade again (except during the absolute worst of thunderstorms and only for 5 minutes). A worse issue is snow accumulating on the dish.

Can you explain this to me? You can connect to the internet on your laptop without an aircard? How did you get this included?I did the switch about a year ago. Much cheaper but I was missing my Directv during the NBA season. They only show 1 HD game at a time as opposed to Directv which had almost all games in HD.

BTW I loved everything about Directv until it came to tech support/installation. Anytime I had one of these guys come to my house I had severe stress. They were mostly all idiots. One moron installed the new HD dish on my roof (when they first came out), told me they were a waste because nothing was in HD yet, and never connected it to the cables. When HD arrived I couldnt figure out why I wasnt getting any of the new HD channels. Tech support guy came a month later, he was at my house an hour and couldnt figure it out no how. He kept insisting it was my box and I kept telling him it cant be. Finally he went up on the roof, even though he said that wasnt his job, and was baffled to see the cables were still connected to the original dish. About 6 months later, we had a severe storm. My dish moved with the wind. Tech support guy came out and he said that same guy who installed my HD dish didnt put the tripod extension. It got to the point where I found a guy installing Directv who lived in my neighborhood, I got his cell# and any time I had a tech support issue I just called him and paid him like $20 on the side. If I ever saw that original guy who installed my HD dish it would be hard not to spit on him or punch him in the face. Thats how much aggravation he caused.

I had a bill sent to collection and on my credit for THEIR screw up - took 6 months for them to figure it out. They made it "right" but it took forever and me having to "fight" their screw up

What pisses me off the most about Directv is that it goes out during a storm. That is really inconvenient when you are trying to watch for tornado updates.

It's ready, trust me. They are clueless as to when their own #### is ready. The system where you put in your phone number and it tells you if you can have it is a total waste of time. I called them and said, the line is in and ready. People are hooked up down the street already. They said there was no line even on the street. I ended up getting hold of an engineer and he came out, inspected it adn said, he would find the right people to get it done. Done within the week. Like I said, no one knows what the other is doing...even in the same department.

Absolutely love our FiOS. No-brainer if you can get it.
:goodposting: Blows away every cable service I've ever had. On demand has huge selection, internet is lightning fast and I get discounts for bundling cell phone with TV service. Not to mention red zone.

I can definitely give you more info on that. We have some good promos now, that includes DE. I am with a third party company that markets for Verizon business customers as well as residential. Verizon may not be able to offer what I can. The best way to save is to combine your phone, internet and TV. To know specifically if your address is eligible for FiOS, I would need your Verizon billing phone number. Send me an email. jhaseley@tmg1.net

It is definitely available in that zip code, but I would have to check your address to see if it's available in your neighborhood. Do you have verizon for home phone currently or not? Send me an email at work and I will check it out for you tomorrow. If you do have Verizon for home phone, include your billing phone number in the email. Thanks. jhaseley@tmg1.net

Wheelhouse, when can I expect FIOS in 48386?
Good question. The FiOS availability is based on where Verizon has their home phone service. If your area has VZ for home phone, it will be among the next available for FiOS. What is the primary home phone service in your area?
i have no idea. if i were to subscribe to comcast, i know they have phone service. when i used to have home phone service over 10 years ago, it was ameritech, i think.

wish I could get it. available in the area (for a long time) but we're "off the beaten path" a little. beginning to doubt I'll ever see it.

Can you explain this to me? You can connect to the internet on your laptop without an aircard? How did you get this included?I did the switch about a year ago. Much cheaper but I was missing my Directv during the NBA season. They only show 1 HD game at a time as opposed to Directv which had almost all games in HD.
Well, the hard working sales guy turned out to over hype a few things. The internet thing is nothing more than where they have a Verizon wireless hot spot. Most turned out to be freakin' Starbucks where you got it for free anyway. Sort of chaps my ###. Funny thing is work sent me a Verizon aircard the next week. So I'm covered anyway..

As I mentioned prior, I am an authorized FiOS agent. If anyone living in the below locations is interested in FiOS, give me a call. There are some great promotions going on right now that my office can offer, that you may not be able to get through Verizon directly. Call my office - 877-503-7660. Ask for me or leave me a message if I'm not available. Mention you're with Footballguys and I will provide an additional discount. Include your name, address and phone number - specifically your address, so I can check for availability in your area.

FiOS is currently available in the following states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington DC

Thanks for the plug.

WTF.With DirecTV, I was paying $150 a month for internet plus the mack-daddy TV package that had every pay channel (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, The Movie Channel, etc etc). My DirecTV bill was within $2 or $3 dollars every month and never fluctuated like Fios does. One thing I liked about DirecTV better was the ability to add premium movie channels ala carte. With Fios, you have to get them in a package (i.e. I cant add just Showtime, I have to get a package with other movie channels in it)Im ---> <--- this close to going back to DirecTV even though I HATE HATE HATE the user interface of their guide/dvr.
Wingnut, $160-170 for TV and Internet seems awfully high, even with the ultimate TV package. I can look up your account and see what you are eligible for to get that total down. Send me an email with your billing phone number to jhaseley@tmg1.net

I would give my left arm for FIOS in my neighbourhood, but unfortunately I'm in AT&T territory (Chicagoland).

So I'm suck with 1.5mbit DSL that is flaky at best. I would switch to Comcast internet... hahahah, no they're the devil. I would go to dialup before Comcast.

Hey Jeff, thanks for offering your support, appreciated. I live in zip 08512 in New Jersey. FIOS is available in my area, all around where I live, and has been for at least 2 years now. Problem is I own an apartment in a complex where I'm not sure if we're wired for it or not or what the deal is, but I can't order it when I call/go on the website. Called my association and VZ, never get an answer as to why it's in my neighborhood and not my complex. I have Comcast, and LOATHE Comcast. Shared non-fiber internet is garbage, even though I'm on their "Blast" speed. Capped too, also garbage, not conducive to Netflix/MLB.TV. I get internet and TV. The regular price rates are insanely expensive, and to adjust I have to call just about every month and fight to death to get rates comparable to regular FIOS rates (I did my homework). Want FIOS yesterday.

You seem pretty knowledgeable, so I wanted to reach out and see if there's anything I can do, or basically assume tough luck and suffer with Comcast.

Thanks in advance man.

Send me an email jhaseley@tmg1.net with your home address and I will check it out for you. It could very well not be wired in your complex, despite being surrounded with service in surrounding neighborhoods. Unfair yes, but I have see it before. I can also try to see if I can sign you up as a new customer, so please provide your name as well to see if it my system will allow it. If it does, you're complex is definitely wired for FiOS.

Fios is currently not available for the state of Georgia. Since Georgia is not within the coverage of Verizon's territory, FiOS will most likely not reach the state of Georgia anytime in the near future. ... Although Verizon FiOS is consistently expanding to other states, Verizon FiOS may never reach Georgia. However, there are currently many other high speed internet service providers to choose from in Georgia. :(
