I'VE DECIDED TO RETIRE FROM FANTASY FOOTBALL (1 Viewer)

Gene Sackman

I started in 1997 in a "just for fun" league, and since then have branched out to money leagues, (relatively) big money leagues, multiple leagues with holdovers, dynasty, auction, played in the WCOFF a few times, you name it..

As this season was approaching, I just wasnt feeling it. So I texted the commissioners of all the leagues Im in and told them I was retiring. One of them joked that I was only 4 years away from my FF pension. I laughed.

Anyway, I feel good. Excited to just watch football and the Vikes this year, and not have to deal with the "stress" of it all. (watching the Vikes can be stressful enough)

It's weird though, as it used to be one of my favorite hobbies. Maybe I just need a year (or two) off.

Anyone else play for a long time and retire? How was it for you? Did you unretire at some point? Go back and forth, like the Brett Favre of FF?

Just curious to hear other peoples experiences.

That's strange. Why not just focus on one league?

Fantasy football just makes watching football so much better.

Why don't you just scale back the number of leagues your in. I have some leagues I play in just because of the groups of friends.

Well, bye......

I cant seem to be in enough leagues. Matter of fact you might have inspired me to join a new league out of spite....

Gene thank you for registering for Footballguys yesterday just in time to post this important fantasy football information in the free for all forum.

I thought about that, but to be honest, I just didnt even have the energy or enthusiasm for one league.

Also, something tells me you haven't been winning your leagues. I've brought in $500 each of the past two-years and that is plenty motivation to keep me going. My buy-ins are only $50 so if $500 isn't enough allure to you, open up your pocket book and let loose.

I started in '93 and played until '08. Never for money, always for bragging rights. I won a few league titles, but by my last season I had lost the excitement for the offseason information gathering and preparation. Plus, my favorite :nerd: dimension of the draft--holding it in public and putting on the feedbag as if we were real franchise owners--had long since become a thing of the past. For me, there was nothing like being at a TGIFridays/Applebee's/Ruby Tuesday type restaurant, waitresses clearing the empty food plates and beer bottles/drink glasses intermingled with discarded draft notebook pages while I reviewed my new roster and told everyone "I really like my team this year."

If that was the case, I would of quit years ago. Not trying to one up you, but I won 3 times that last year. Doesnt have anything to do with money.

I recommend loaning your 1.5 racks to a girl you know from a bar or restaurant. Keep us updated on how it goes.

Or use that 1.5 racks as seed money to buy some used cell phones. Or invest it all in HEMP and let us know how that goes.

Wow, this is a lot of negative feedback.

I feel like Edward Norton's character in American History X, after he told the skin head/nazis that he was leaving them...

They're looking for their next puppet. If you amp up your act a little bit, this has 10 page potential.

You're gonna have to turn the dial, being an extreme Vikings homer is a great start but you're gonna have to step it up.

Maybe mention a story about how your wife walks naked in front of the TV to distract you from watching the game? Or sexy time with the wife caused you to set a bad lineup for your Championship game causing you to lose big $$$ and that's why you quit?

Just spitballing ideas here.

Since you're retiring, can I claim your internet handle "Gene Sackman" as my fantasy team name? My leaguemates love seeing clever puns like that as team names, and this is one of the best since "Double Dwaynebowe".

i only play in leagues where i know each and every member in the league personally.

I can tell you that I've never seen someone quit FFL and then come back... there are just too many bad beats in a short 13-16 week game and I think less "skill" involved then ever before.... and really skill isn't a very adequate term... it's more like "effort" put in to actually read analysis and keep up with trends.

I could definitely see my leagues both folding within 5 years... I think if you got every members opinion honestly they would say they only play for the social aspect of the game and that if the league folded they probably wouldn't seek a replacement league out.

 I haven't played in years. It makes watching games so much more relaxing.
Wait, you watch the games without FFL?

If it wasn't for FFL and pick 'em I definitely wouldn't watch any games beyond the Chiefs, the AFC/NFC championships and the superbowl

I watch less games than I ever have before thanks to the Red Zone channel and just being able to keep track of my stats/score on my phone.... not sure what the point of watching would be without FFL.. i'd never watch Falcons vs. Giants or some other crap I don't care about on MNF without it.

This is so true. To be fair, I was never the NFL's greatest fan, but when I played FF, I watched every single game I could. But I found it hard to root for my teams when I had players on the opposing teams. So one year I stopped playing FF. And I quickly realized how uninterested I was in most NFL games. I'll watch Eagles games if I'm not busy. Or Texans games if they're on and I'm not busy. But truth be told, I'm usually busy.

I can't remember the last MNF game I've watched that didn't involve the Eagles.

Retired a long time ago. And no Em it has nothing to do with money. I won a few, I lost a few. Just got tired of it. Wasn't enjoying my Sundays anymore. I don't miss it a bit.

I was one of the NFL's greatest fans.... I don't know what % my disinterest stems from between other more important things going on in life... or that the way the game is being played is so drastically different from the product that I grew up with that I don't even recognize it anymore.

I couldnt watch football if it wasnt for my fantasy players. If it wasnt for a playoff fantasy league saving me i wouldnt be able to just watch the NFL playoffs without having my little people to cheer for...

I quit about 8 years ago. I don't mind a little trash talk, but a couple of guys started an exchange and it got personal. I was the commish and both were whining about the other. I didn't need that drama.

I love the game and can just sit back and relax while watching any NFL game.

I love the game. I played from junior high through my Air Force days. I'm so much happier just rooting for my team and not having to worry about what some third string receiver did today because my good player was on a bye.
