I picked him up right before the season started but i really dont know much about him. Can anyone enlighten me?

Had been hearing buzz about him the last 2 preseasons but this year looks like he will be given a chance. So i'd really like to know more about him.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Dynasty Outlook

TIA

His strength is his hands and his route running. For example, if the opposing team is punting the football from their own 50 or so and trying to pin us deep in our territory, it is imperative that you have a punt returner who is super-reliable catching the ball because a muffed punt near your own endzone is a recipe for disaster. In these situations, Cotchery, who is not a punt returner of ours will be back to field the punt because he has the most reliable hands on the team.As for his route running, its impeccable. His college stats were gaudy but he fell to the 4rth round because he only ran a 4.6 forty at the combine. Straight line speed is not everything. The guy just knows how to run routes and get open and with his hands, he never drops a catchable ball.Lastly, the coaches (especially Mangini) absolutely loves him. Mangini, who goes out of his way to never really "praise" a player individually by name has gushed over Cotchery and his work ethic on numerous occassions and he even named Cotchery the teams "Most Outstanding Player" of the offseason for his committment in the weight room, class room, and voluntary workouts. Then, he named him "Most Improved" when asked the specific question by reporters of who he feels is the team's most improved player from last season and early this offseason.Cotch will start opposite of Coles all season barring injury. His job will not be in jeopardy.HTH.

I can only speak for his college days at NC State, but as a college athlete he was very good. He wasn't the fastest receiver you'd ever seen, but he ran great routes, always got open, and he never dropped the ball. After Koren Robinson left, Jerricho became Philip Rivers #1 WR for three years. I miss those days of hearing Rivers to Cotchery, touchdown!! Rivers had a lot of trust in Jerricho. When he would throw some of those long bombs, he knew even covered, Jerricho had the hands to get that ball. I remember in their last bowl game, State was just eating their opponent alive, and when Rivers was finally pulled from the game, he and Cotchery left the field together with their arms around each other. It was a kodak moment I tell you. :pics: I think I'm getting misty eyed.

Cotcherry is a very nice NFL player - 4th round pick who took the starting job away from the incumbent with a great training camp. Good route runner, good hands, good size, only ok speed. Excellent understanding of the game, a really tough and versatile player.

As an FF player, I'm not so high. Let's face it - when your QB goes off for 300+ yards, his WRs are going to look good. But the Titans have an awful pass defense, and Coles is stil clearly the #1 WR on the team. With McCareins, Tim Dwight and Brad Smith behind him, Cotcherry is going to have lots of competition for catches all season. And from a dynasty perspective, I expect the Jets to shed McCareins and Dwight in the offseason and draft a WR on the first day of next year's draft, unless Brad Smith emerges as a potential #1 this season. Cotcherry will never be a #1 WR in the NFL, imho.

I've said it on other threads, but keep an eye on this kid.

Coles will likely remain Chad's security blanket, but Cotchery got more targets than Coles yesterday (12 to 10). This may be a one-week aberration, but it's clear that Chad has no problems looking his way (particularly in the red zone).

As noted, it was against the Titans, so I would temper the enthusiasm a bit. Let's see how he does versus the Pats next week. If nothing else, he's already had more of an impact than McCareins has had in 2 years.

Jets WR2 numbers in the past two years:

2004: McCareins 56/770/4 (WR42)

2005: McCareins 43/713/2 (WR45)

First off, depending on your league parameters, there could be value there. I play in 14 team leagues that start 3 WRs, so a top 42 WR is starter-caliber.

Second, last year the Jets' QB play was utterly horrible. If Pennington stays healthy, it should be greatly improved, which could imply improvement for WR2. Heck, if Cotchery holds as WR2 for the season, he is almost certain to improve on McCareins' TD numbers, given that he already has 1 and looks to be a red zone target. A few more TDs last year, and McCareins would have been a top 35 WR.

Third, as already noted, Cotchery has all the intangibles. So if he has already earned the job, he is likely to keep it barring injury.

Well yesterdays performance means little to nothing to me as I doubt i would even play him. But like I said I had never really watched him playand was just wondering what he had to offer. Is he an oppurtunist or is he skilled is basically what I wanted to know. Thanks for the insight from everyone.

:goodposting: Cotchery was as reliable as a WR can be in college. He's definitely worth stashing on a dynasty roster. I see him filling the role Wayne Chrebet used to for the Jets. He'll never be a huge yardage guy but he'll make the tough catches and will be a 3rd down force. Give him and the Jets a little bit of time and he'll pay dividends but also realize that his ceiling is likely a strong #3 option.
