J. Stewart's Achilles remains a problem (1 Viewer)

Jonathan Stewart anticipates practicing only once a day in training camp because his sore Achilles' tendon is still a problem.

This is becoming a serious concern. Stewart, who sat out all spring, didn't practice Monday and won't push DeAngelo Williams as hard for carries if he isn't 100%. He needs to be monitored closely leading up to fantasy drafts. Stewart's feet have been been problematic since his last season at Oregon.

smh @ people who let D.Williams slide, scared of injury prone J. Stewart stealing carries.

I'm more concerned about the fact that their DL is now depleted. Seemed like Stewart was better at running the ball when they were playing the clock management game.

This would be a huge bump to DWill, and possibly Mike Goodson?

How would they utilize Goodson if Stewart were not available?

Panthers | Delhomme impressed with GoodsonThu, 28 May 2009 11:55:02 -0700Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme said he has been impressed with the speed of rookie RB Mike Goodson. "He's got some jets, I know that," Delhomme said. "Don't get me wrong, we're still in skirts right now. You always have those guys who look good in shorts. But this guy, he's got some explosiveness. In the little bit of time he's been out here you can tell he's explosive." I be scared of this Goodson RB, he's been compaired to a Chris Johnson type back. If Stewarts out, Goodson will steal from Williams, big time

Really? We're gonna pimp the RB3 on Carolina? Did you watch DeAngelo lst year and his college career at Memphis? When JStew is out, it will be the DWill show just like last year and to think otherwise is foolish IMO. This is classic stop reading all the blurbs in camp mantra for me. Mike Goodson will be a footnote in the 2009 season...now if you want to talk long term or if both DWill and JStew get run over by a Mack truck, fine. The #1 RB in FF and even in NFL terms simply tore it up, not to mention that Coach Fox never typically allows rookies to have too big a role on offense...I've said enough.Sorry if I am coming across like an ###, not my intention.

This. Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it...and overpay for the RB2 in Carolina.

Even Jake admits that some guys just look good in shorts. Goodson might be solid but lets not get ahead of ourselves here... if JStew only got half the workload of DWill don't expect Goodson to get nearly the number of touches JStew would have received. DWill is going to explode again this year and people who doubt him are going to feel like fools again, only to underrate him next year.

Seriously, I got him 14th pick in a 14 team league???? Maybe I'm playing with clowns but wow?

I'm flabbergasted by the lack of Dwill love. I'm picking #4 in a 14-teamer and will be taking him without hesitation. No brainer.

Just take a look back at some of the Dwill v Stewart threads as well as the Foster v Dwill threads. There was about a %90 saturation of people who completely misread the situation and it is very very hard for serious FF players to admit they were that wrong about Dwill and they are still clinging to their notions that Stewart is not a glassman and that taking some time to learn a NFL system behind a veteran RB sure fire indicator that a player has no talent. Dwill is one of the most sure things at RB this season.

Mike Goodson will be a footnote in the 2009 season...
I wouldn't disregard Mike Goodson's role this year. The coaches have said that they envision him as a 3rd down back, a slot receiver, and as their kickoff returner. They like him a lot.
Any thought this is camp talk?SignedJerrious "Im going to get more carries this year" Norwood
He has already pretty much cemented the kickoff returner role on special teams. I think there is a good chance that he will make an appearance on some plays as a slot receiver and as a 3rd down back. He isn't taking over as RB 1 or 2. They just want to work him into some plays due to his incredible speed and his ability to make defenders miss.

I thought Dwill had microfracture surgery a couple of years back? Doesn't that concern anyone?

He did? When was this? In his 3 pro seasons he played in 13,16and 16 games and I know he played his whole senior year. Williams is also 4th ALL TIME in collegiate rushing so I am guessing he didn't miss any time during his underclassmen years. If he had microfracture surgery it had to have been in high school, and if he did have the surgery which I don't think he did, no it shouldn't concern anyone.

Did you happen to sleep through last season?Just in case:

You can watch some footage here NFL Downloads
Microfracture surgery tends to lessen a professionals playing lifetime due to "Studies have shown that microfracture techniques don't fill in the chondral defect fully and the repair material they form is fibrocartilage. Fibrocartilage is not as good mechanically as the original hyaline cartilage; it is much denser and isn't able to withstand the demands of everyday activities as well as hyaline cartilage and is therefore at higher risk of breaking down" source. if Dwill had this surgery I think it is very valid to ask if this is a concern.

As noted above he did not, that was why I asked.

I've been a big supporter of Deangelo's and this is the first I have ever heard this. You may want to check your sources. Or stop listening to Switz.

Were you concerned about it last season? I would assume you were. After the season he had if you still have concerns I am not sure if anything will make you feel better other than knowing he didnt have the surgery.

I would be concerned if a player has this surgery regardless how he did last year. Athletes who get this surgery tend to have sudden relapses due to the weaker cartilage replacement. He did not have this surgery so I would have no concerns.

Then I suggest you never take a player who had this surgery no matter how successful they are after they have it. You seem like one of those guys...

Yes I tend to avoid players who have this type of surgery, I would recommend avoiding Reggie Bush as he just had this surgery, do you recommend drafting him? I seem to be what type of guy?

From rotoworldJonathan Stewart anticipates practicing only once a day in training camp because his sore Achilles' tendon is still a problem. This is becoming a serious concern. Stewart, who sat out all spring, didn't practice Monday and won't push DeAngelo Williams as hard for carries if he isn't 100%. He needs to be monitored closely leading up to fantasy drafts. Stewart's feet have been been problematic since his last season at Oregon.smh @ people who let D.Williams slide, scared of injury prone J. Stewart stealing carries.
I'm reading conflicting reports. CBSsports.com is reporting that he did practice Monday and that he looked explosive. On Monday morning, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart looked fast breaking through a hole in the line of scrimmage at the start of practice. Stewart missed all of the OTA sessions in June with a sore Achilles, but now appears fine.(Updated 08/03/2009). Can anyone confirm that he practiced on Monday?

Jonathan Stewart was not on the field for the Panthers' first day of training camp practice Monday. An explanation hasn't been given, but Stewart missed all of OTA season with a sore Achilles' tendon and it may still be an issue. The team has been very secretive about the injury, but by all accounts Stewart was supposed to be back by now. The ailment resulted from Stewart's college turf toe problems. There's been no known discussion of Stewart needing Achilles' surgery.

He practiced Monday morning, but he didn't practice Monday night (but he worked on the sideline with the strength and conditioning coach). He will only practice once a day due to his achilles tendon. If you go to the Panthers website, there is a picture of Stewart losing the ball from taking a hit from Diggs on the field.

It looks like he practiced in the morning but not in the evening:"PLAY OF THE DAY: WR Dwayne Jarrett made a great catch in traffic with CB Chris Gamble draped all over him Monday morning. Also, FB Brad Hoover had a great block on Gamble to spring RB Jonathan Stewart on a pass in the flat. Hoover actually could have laid out Gamble, who didn’t appear to see him, but wisely held off on decking a valuable member of the defense" source.

"Both Stewart and veteran receiver Muhsin Muhammad missed the evening practice. After coming off an Achilles injury, Stewart is likely on one-a-day practices for now" source.

Picture of him on the field

I have the #5 pick and even though I had Deangelo last year I'm afraid to pull the trigger, leaning more towards LT or Jackson. If Stewart really can't stay on the field it is a no brainer to draft Deangelo at that spot.
