This garbage really is great for distillers. it gives them a chance to sell their dregs, combined with some neutral grain alcohol and a little flavoring at a massive mark-up. This crap is essentially unregulated (as opposed to bourbon, which is highly regulated) so they can throw whatever the hell they want in there.

I do wonder what the overall impact will be for proper whiskey. It gives these distillers a nice subsidy, a way to make money without necessarily raising prices on proper whiskey, and without using up any extra room in the rickhouse.  Then again, it still has to be distilled, so I could see distillers spending more time distilling this crap for the easy profit, and less time making bourbon.

Today's consumer will accept all kinds of garbage. They love paying real prices for vodka which doesn't have to be aged. They don't care that the top bourbon and whiskey brands are all dropping down to 80 proof (in the name of a "smoother profile") without cutting the price. And now, they are lapping up this flavored whiskey stuff while distillers chuckle.

...is really tasty...for cough syrup.  Makes a sore throat and the rest of you feel good

Is it good bourbon? Heck no.

Good for cooking. Wife made a delicious apple side dish with it when she made pork chops and I used it in my homemade BBQ sauce.

Knob Creek is a good value imo. I don't drink much bourbon but that's my usual brand when I do buy a bottle.

Life is too short to drink a Jack Daniels anything unless it is your only option...
JD7 really is some terrible whiskey. An absolutely brilliant piece of marketing, but terrible whiskey. How so many still walk right into the liquor store, past dozens and dozens of truly outstanding bourbons and whiskies, straight to JD really baffles me.

Never had honey whiskey but a cheap guilty pleasure of mine is Jim beam maple.  Definitely lower end, but on the rocks it's drinkable.

You're right that a lot of their success is marketing.  But then people get used to JD and actually prefer it because it's what they know. Plus it (and beam) is relatively cheap.

What are the better bourbons and whiskies in the same price tier? (In your opinion)

Old Granddad is the way to go IMO when you're looking for good and not too pricey.

JD is only for mixing - you can make a decent girly cocktail with this stuff and something like Fireball or one of those Apple ales.  Or if you are just looking to get hammered.
