Jacoby Jones to start?... (1 Viewer)

Jacoby joins the ones: Wide receiver Jacoby Jones has had quite a week, and his stellar performance in the preseason opener against Chicago was capped off today by Kubiak with the announcement that Jones has been moved to the number-one offensive unit in some play packages and may see a start at the second receiver spot Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals.

“He just continues to make plays,” Kubiak said. “This kid just handles himself like he’s been doing it a long, long time. We need to study him pretty hard and make sure we go get some more like that because he has made a lot of ground pretty quick.”

Jones knows that he has advanced quickly up the depth chart, but he knows that he isn’t close to proclaiming that he’s “made it” in the NFL.

“I don’t think it will ever just be a time where I’ve made it, because I’m still working to get better,” Jones said. “I hope it’s a long time from now, because I want to keep getting better and better and better.”

thanks catching the update for me. Seems as though Jones is moving along quicker than any of us anticipated.

They were targeting him quite a bit in the first pre-season game. He caught 4, dropped another 2 and was probably targeted 7 or 8 times or so. The kid is raw but he definately has skills. One of the drops was easily catchable but most rookies have those lapses in concentration. He's only going to get better and it seems like the staff really likes him.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Jacoby Jones is making a major push for the starting wide receiver job opposite Andre Johnson. While Kevin Walter was given the job in the offseason, he is struggling to hang onto it. Jones is proving to be a playmaker who the Texans can't afford to keep off the field. He ran two reverses against the Cardinals and gained a total of 24 yards. He also returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown and caught two passes for 32 yards. Walter struggled in the first preseason game, but redeemed himself against Arizona with one reception for 39 yards. It's hard for him to compete, though, with the speed and versatility of Jones, a rookie out of Lane College. Consistency is the key for Walter to hold onto the job. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Jones couldn't be putting on a better show. He did everything right in his second preseason game. Coach Gary Kubiak said he is also the most well-conditioned player on the team. Jones is passing every test they are throwing at him. :)

Woah Nellie someone call the Bomb Squad because Jacoby Jones is BLOWING up!

Punt return TD AND a TD catch!

ROY!

(on being impressed with WR Jacoby Jones) “I certainly am. I think everyone on our football team has. It was great to see him do that in the first preseason game but then when he followed up last week and then this week again with great performances it just shows how maturity and his confidence level. It is great to see that we can count him every week

(on going through the touchdown play to Jones) “They had coverage to cover the initial play downfield so if it wasn’t there initially I was just going to look for my back underneath and Ron (Dayne) got held up in the line of scrimmage by their defensive lineman. So I was able to get outside the pocket, and it was going to be one of those things where if Jacoby (Jones) was able to get open in the back of the end zone so that I could give him a chance. And if he couldn’t, I was just going to throw it away, because it was a two-minute drill there trying, and I was trying to conserve time. Maybe would have run it, but once I got on the edge, that’s what was going through my mind.”

On that play with David Carr playing QB, he would have had Dayne as his primary receiver and would have either run out of bounds one yard behind the line of scrimmage or squeezed in a one yard completion to Dayne.

Thanks to Bloom and Cecil who made me, and others, aware of this guy a long time ago.
Ditto. Big ups to FBG for putting this kid on my radar. I'm just glad I was online yesterday and reading the game thread when he scored on another PR. In my return yardage league I was able to snag him off waivers before the Texans homer. It's this kind of early info that separates FBG from the rest of the pack. They are the reason I had Colston on my radar in the preseason last year and Jacoby this year.

QUICK VENT

I loved this kid because of his situation and the chance that he would have an immediate impact for the Texans. In my rookie draft this year it was my pick and I was choosing between WR's Jason Hill SF and Jacoby Jones Texans. I already own A. Johnson, and I had Jones higher on my list than Hill, but picked Hill, because of not wanting 2 WR's from the same team. Now, Hill may end up being a good player one day as well, but right now it definitely looks like the wrong decision.

END VENT.

He's sitting right there on the wire in one of my leagues. My dilemma is that I need to drop either James Jones or Crayton to pick him up.

Another reason I love this place. Jacoby went undrafted in my dynasty league, but with the few threads I've read on him I've been keeping an eye on him. When I saw the return TD last night I grabbed him off waivers. :goodposting:

and the 2007 Colston award goes to JACOBY JONES :lmao:
I don't think so.Colston had to beat out a declining Horn and become number 1, Jacoby will never be able to put up those numbers with Johnson lining up on the opposite side.
He'll never be able to go for 1000/8? Really? I'll admit that 1300/12 is probably unattainable but 1000/8 is certainly within the realm of possibility.

:no:Not as the #3.
Really? You seriously think he's #3?With the stellar preseason that Walter has put up, there's no way he keeps the #2 spot. Jones totally won that job last night, and he will play the final preseason game only trying not to lose it.

James Jones plays for Green Bay and is behind Driver and Jennings. Jacoby Jones plays for Houston and will likely be the #2.

I think Poly is referring not to Jacoby Jones but James Jones -- the quotation was edited in an earlier post.

Gopher State changed te quote to read JAMES Jones. No doubt Jacoby will enter the season as the #2.

My bad.

I definitely think Colston numbers are out of the question for James Jones, who will be WR3 probably most of the season.

Colston numbers are a possibility (not necessarily probability) for Jacoby Jones as A. Johnson will pull a lot of attention like Horn did last year from Colston.

Kubiak on Jones from today's press confernece...houstontexans.com

(on if wide receiver Jacoby Jones moved up the depth chart with his performance) “Well I know one thing, he’s going to be on that football field. I see them the same way. (Wide receiver) Kevin (Walter)’s our starter. I think Kevin’s had a fine camp, he’s earned that job. But it’s pretty obvious that No. 12 is going to be on the field a lot. The way y’all have seen us play him the last two games Is a lot like if we were opening this weekend, you’re going to see it the same way. You’re going to play three receivers in this league one way or another. And the great thing about him I think is that if Kevin was out of the game, he naturally could go in for Kevin. If Andre wanted a break, he could go for Andre. He’s a sharp kid. He’s going to be out there many plays and three wides, he’s going to be out there starting. So the more touches he gets, the better our team’s probably going to be.”

No I did not change quote to James Jones, that was done by another poster, I stand by Jacoby Jones.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak says Kevin Walter will begin the season as a starter.

Probably just trying to keep the rook motivated and pushing himself. It's just a ploy...

He also said Jones will be on the field alot. Houston runs 3WR's most of the Time, Walter will not keep Jacoby off the field.
