Jags extend Daryl Smith, moving to MLB? (1 Viewer)

Jags re-sign Smith

Been loving this guy for a while, and figured it was a matter of time until the Jags put Mike Peterson at WLB and Daryl Smith at MLB. I'm a Jags homer, but that's a nice set of LBs with Ingram at SLB.

I say you don't fix what isn't broken. Peterson stays at MLB, not only because he's good at that spot, but more so because he's the true leader of that D.

Yup, their defense looked great until Peterson was injured this season. I would think they'd go back to that.

Mike Peterson, while an excellent MLB, isn't getting any younger and his natural position is outside as well. I suspect that Jaguars will plan for future years and keep Daryl Smith in the middle.

hopefully this doesn't happen or it won't do me any good to promote Ingram from my taxi squad. ;)

The Jags have been a ROLB/LOLB team over the past two seasons. Ingram was the LOLB in 2006 when Peterson went out, but was a three down player. So, while he's not the SLB exactly, he's aligned over the TE most often. His major issue next season will be that he's pretty unlikely to be a three down player with both Peterson and Smith healthy and will definitely see his tackle opportunities slashed with two solid LBs alongside and covered up by a healthy (presumably) Henderson and Stroud and kept clean to make tackles.

Personally, I have a feeling the Jaguars LB's will be looking like this in 07:

SLB: Smith

MLB: Peterson

WLB: Ingram

SLB has more responsibilities than a player playing on the weakside (read & react).

In addition, D. Smith plays better in pass coverage which makes him a better fit. Though, if he does indeed land as the SLB, you will see him & Peterson as the 3 down LB's.

That is my take on thw whole situation - the good & the bad!

RAPTURE

thanks Jene and Rapture.

so if rosters are deep enough (53 man in my case) , then Ingram is probably worth holding on to considering Peterson's age and injury history.

I have Ingram on my 53 man (active) roster and I do not plan of cutting him any time soon. If this was the stock market, I would say Ingram has a hold status at this point in time. Hope this helps!
