Jags sign Northcutt, yawn (1 Viewer)

The Jaguars have reportedly signed WR Dennis Northcutt to a five-year contract worth roughly $3.4 million-per-year. He got $4.5 million to sign.

Jacksonville wanted a smallish speedster to stretch the field between Matt Jones and Reggie Williams, and apparently believes the drop-prone Northcutt is the answer. He should take some pressure off Maurice Jones-Drew on returns but could cut into Ernest Wilford's playing time.

seems like alot for him but the jags needed a WR with more shake.

...and more oops?

Reasonable signing IMO.
Ok - 4.5m per year is too much for Bennett but 3.4m is reasonable for Northcutt?I think I'd take the former deal
I like that Northcutt can return kicks as well. He also has shown to be adaptable to a number of positions on the field (X, Y, Z) while Bennett has not. So, for 33% less money, yes, I like the deal.
I thought what the Jags wanted was someone that had sure hands - that is not my impression with Northcutt (Bennett doesn't either) - they will pay 3.4m for a kick returner/wr4 - that seems a little steep to me.

 This signing makes sense; but the Jaguars get yet another ultra-athletic player who cant catch. I guess, in all reality, the signing is good in that we needed a burner who can stretch the field and get some nice yac and return kicks. Drops are an issue but think about the other options via FA or via the draft- not many sure handed recievers to be sure. The price seems reasonable, seeing all the other contracts recently. However, I would have much rather gotten Ted Ginn Jr. for this role. An upgrade over Northcutt in all facets and would bring some publicity to an otherwise superstar-deprived team.

As someone who's watched Northcutt for years, he's a superb punt returner, but a pretty lousy receiver. He's too small, takes plays off, and has very unreliable hands. He also has an attitude problem, although forking over the big bucks will shut him up.

I know that Bennett isn't known for his hands either, but you can't argue with the guy's production. Northcutt, on the other hand, has caught 11 TDs in 7 years. It's foolish to suggest that Northcutt could help the team more than Bennett as a WR, and almost $4 million for a punt returner is just plain dumb (sorry Jags fans).

Seems like kind of a waste to me. You can draft this kind of player in the 4th round.

Exqueeze me, but you can pickup that kind of player who went undrafted. Given what we know about Northcutt, I doubt you would ever find a GM that would draft him in any round.

re-salaries. the cap went up a ton last year and not every team spent it all(last summer). When you add to that this year's increase and expiring contact, many teams suddenly have alot of $. This unsure market this March was expected by many and there's quite a few articles out there stating that. In Bennett's defense, he signed first and 4.5 seemed good. If he could renegotiate tomorrow, he'd probably want more once he sees Northcutt's $. That's not how it works though so....

While I think he got too much(kudos to his agent) Northcutt's decent. He's OK. The loss of Jimmy Smith's was enormous. If those 3 need some vet around and it has a positive effect, it might be worth every penny they overpaid him.

Yeah, I'm thinking Yamon Figurs would be around pretty late in the draft. I don't see where Northcutt is better.

This isn't a surprise at all. Northcutt and/or Curtis was the targeted WR by Jax for the slot for a week or so.

From the Red Dog draft thread:

43.13 Northcutt, Dennis CLE WR

Another sleeper. It pays to stay up on news and/or NFL rumors.

Northcutt to Jacksonville?

Apparently the Jags are looking at Northcutt to come in as their #3 for next season.

44.07 Looker, Dane STL WR

Kevin Curtis is leaving. Shaun MacDonald is out. Who's the #3 after Holt and Bruce? Dane Looker.
