Panthers extend Delhomme

The Panthers announced they have agreed to extend the contract of quarterback Jake Delhomme, which secures their long-term commitment to him at the all-important position and also provides some salary-cap relief. Delhomme was in the final year of his contract and was scheduled to count more than $11 million against the cap, but now has a new five-year deal that agent Rick Smith said is worth $42.5 million with $20 million in guarantees. Smith said the contract's structure was "extremely complicated" but will save the Panthers at least a couple million in 2009 cap space.

Sorry, but the glaring weakness on Carolina right now is the QB position. JD was not the same last year after the Tommy John(?) surgery he had on his elbow from the season before. I thought the consensus was pretty much stick a fork in JD but maybe I'm in the minority on this.

Watching that playoff game, I wouldve bet Delhomme never suited up for Carolina again.

What are they thinking?

The playoff game was absolutely horrible. That said, I don't get the Delhomme hate. I'm a huge Steve Smith fan, so give him the credit if you want, but Carolina had a very good passing game last year. And no, it wasn't just because they had a good running game.

Delhomme posted terrific numbers, many of them on deep passes, last year.

I don't think it's horrible.

It opens up some cap space and I think there's something to be said for stability at the QB position.

Delhomme isn't a great QB, but he did lead them to a 12-4 season coming off a pretty severe injury. It's not like they are going to draft the next franchise QB with the 59th pick.

Delhomme has been a solid QB in this league and the Panthers obviously feel he still can be. I don't think it's a huge stretch.

It's not sexy, but it could be a smart move.

Now I get it, those interceptions were a business decision. I guess the Panthers told him that they'll extend his contract one year for every pick he threw in the playoff game. I guess Jake was comfortable with 5.

The Panthers aren't built to win at this exact moment, but not far either. I guess they were in a rock and a hard place, the devil that know is better then the devil that you don't know. If I were them I would have tried to offer him and my disgruntled pro-bowl defensive end to work out a deal to land a great QB.

Terrific numbers?? I had Jake last year. In one league he was 18th in QB scoring, in the other 20th. 16TD 17INTsI am not a Jake hater but Carolina is a running team now. With D-Willy and Stew they pound the ball in the red zone. I can`t see Jake getting his old magic back anytime soon. A backup FF QB at best.

I don't hate JD. In fact I kind of like the guy. But after that choke job in the playoffs how does he rate an extension like this? If he had not tanked in that game would he have gotten $27 million?

I'm pretty shocked at this.

It'd be understandable if he was 27-28 yrs old, but 34?

I have a feeling CAR may be regretting this very soon.

Jake played terrible in that game, but Carolina if I recall gave up on their powerful running game in the first quarter after getting down by only 7-14 points or so. I blame the coaches almost entirely for the playoff loss.

Is this to do with the uncapped year and Carolina opening up some cap space right now. He was going to count 10 million this year anyways. How much will he count now. This is probably like a 2 year contract in the end and it allowed them to move the money out later and freed up cap now as their hands have been tied by Peppers.

I still think insane contract. I look on this like Denver a few years ago who said we will never win with Jake and did something about it. Carolina will never win the SB with Delhomme and it was almost time to move on. Biggest issue being no 1st rounder to work with to get their QB of the future.

Maybe a bit surprising on the surface but this does help the Panthers in many regards in the present. I question Delhomme like many but he is better than alot of guys and like someone else mentioned, does open up some cap space.

Possibly also gives Delhomme some confidence that the team is behind him which can't be a bad thing after last year's playoff meltdown.

If they were desperate for one of this year's rookies, they would try to trade Peppers for a 1st and more. Carolina knows that they're a better team with Delhomme and Peppers vs. with Quinn or Freeman or whoever at QB and no Peppers. They can always sign a mid-round prospect this year or a higher-rated 2010 QB.

Probably need to see how much was the signing bonus. If the "guarantees" are roster bonus type things, it maybe be easier to cut him in the next year or two not harder.

Carolina came very close to winning the Super Bowl in 2003 with Delhomme, and they have won 5 playoff games with Jake. Jake is a good quarterback with great leadership skills, and he brings stability to the position, and his teammates believe in him. I doubt he will be the starter for the next 5 years, but right now he is, and I don't think that is a bad thing for the Panthers.

Chase was talking NFL numbers, specifically that Delhomme was #1 in the NFL in yards per completion and #4 in the NFL in yards per attempt. Plus the 12-4 record. He also was #9 in the league in sack percentage and only lost 1 fumble, which isn't bad for a QB.

Perfect buy low in a dynasty. Can probably get him for a 3rd rounder or less. Especially during the rookie draft. Perfect as a #2 or insurance in case your main buy goes down.

Gotcha :excited: It gets confusing here when we try to separate real football and FF. Jake did manage the team well all year despite the meltdown in the playoffs.

Matt Moore owners might want to jump ship. If they haven't already. =)
Yep, that's the first thing I thought when I read the OP. It's been a loooooooooooong wait for nothing, oh well.

 Chase, you have a different definition of "terrific" than I do.Delhomme was below average in QB rating, TD's and int %. He was 15th in yards thrown, which is barely above average. The most you could say was the he was average!

I don't get it.
but Delhomme did and I think that the Panthers offense will be just fine. They didn't need another QB. Jake will manage the offense better this year than last and if they can improve the O-Line at all, the running game will be dynamic.

Chase values adjusted net yards per attempt above all else. And judging by his qualification of Delhomme having "terrific" numbers, I now realize he values that metric WAY TOO MUCH. Delhomme is a replacement level NFL QB at this juncture, and giving a 34 year old who is likely to be the worst QB in his conferences playoffs any year in the future $20mm in guarantees seems laughable to me.

Suggesting playoffs to begin with suggests that Jake has some value. Or else why are we talking playoffs? With an uncapped year looming, is $20k spread over 5 years really that much for a starting QB? Really?... I think not..And the Panthers could cut Jake at anytime. I'm not sure what the cap hit would be on his new contract but I'd have to think freeing up cap space in '09' for a guy that could be cut in 2010-2012 is a smart move by the panthers.Jake played a pretty bad game during the playoffs but was a solid asset to the team during the regular season. I really don't see Jake's performance in that game as bad as a 5INT game would suggest. Lets remember, those weren't all Jake's fault. 2 of those could have easily been blamed on his WRs. And the coaching decisions doing and before the game were horrible. Who leaves Larry Fitzgerald in single coverage being covered by a rookie? I mean come on!! On top of that, Cardinals had a very under-rated D last season, There aren't a whole lot of QB's that could carry their teams when the opposing D knows you've abandoned the run. I can count 6 that I'd undoubtedly trust in that situation. Jake had a bad game... this is true... but he also got them to the playoffs to begin with. Lets consider that.

 The guy played the worst playoff game by a QB EVER and, at 34 yrs old, received $20 mil guaranteed in following offseason. Good luck with that Carolina. :lmao:

Carolina's D played terrible in that game too, and the run was abandoned before the second quarter started. Players have bad games from time to time, and Delhomme had the worst of his life. He is usually very good in the playoffs. I think it was a good move by the Panthers to extend Delhomme, and they saved themselves some cap money in doing so.

I was Very Close to starting Is JD done thread, good think this came up. How do you account for 4 INT's and 1 fumble and like 60 yards passing. That is dam right pathetic. In fact I am dropping him as soon as i get a chance and i have Steve Smith unfortunately.

Any ways I hope JD recovers but how can you be that bad as a starting QB in this league even Stafford and Sanchez were 10X better today then him.
