Jakeem Grant- does size matter? (1 Viewer)

With pick sixth round 11th pick the Dolphins selected Jakeem Grant. It's always nice to find guys that has something against them, but somehow they find a way to play the game. With Jakeem it is his size, but if you can somehow look beyond the size it's not hard to see this guy is football player. He makes plays, has awesome speed and is ready to prove everyone wrong.

OVERVIEW

Grant had 90 receptions for 1,268 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2015. All of those totals were career-highs during his four-year career at Texas Tech.

PRO DAY RESULTS

40-yard dash: 4.38 seconds
Vertical: 36 1/2 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 9 inches
Short shuttle: 4.06 seconds
3-cone: 7.01 seconds
Bench: 15 reps of 225 pounds

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Eye-popping long speed. Athletic with outstanding play speed and not just a straight-line "track guy". Can access the nitrous out of his breaks and leave defenders with recovery work to do. Speed outs, whip routes and drags will always be open. Subtle but shifty in space and shows ability to find daylight if help doesn't come flying in after the catch. Has four kick return touchdowns during career. Torched LSU with 10 catches for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the Texas Bowl including a 46-yarder against CB Tre'Davious White.

WEAKNESSES

Hard to ignore his diminutive frame. Scouts are concerned about ability to hold up against NFL hitters. Small catch radius requires more accurate quarterback. Gears down unnecessarily at times within his routes. Limited route runner on collegiate level and often used as "catch and run" weapon. Average ball tracker down the field. Tagged with 23 drops over last three seasons. Gets in hurry as kick returner and needs more patience.

DRAFT PROJECTION

 Rounds 6 or 7

BOTTOM LINE

Grant's size will immediately eliminate him from many draft boards, but teams looking for pure speed, a kick returner and a slot option who can add new wrinkles to an offense may have Grant on a target list. Grant might be small, but he doesn't play small and hes certainly not a novelty act. Grant's pro day workout might have created enough buzz to warrant a third-day selection.
This is from NFL.com. What I like most is that he proved that he is more than a return man with 90 receptions and 1268 yards. And even if you don't like his chances, the news that he is returning punts and kickoffs is bad news for Landry. It's really crowded there in Dolphins, but as a dynasty prospect and if you are in deeper leagues like me, I love to stash this kid and see what he can do.

(Rotoworld) Sixth-round pick Jakeem Grant is the favorite for Miamis punt return job. Analysis: Grant was a kick-returner only in college. Playing him at both return spots should get him more touches. Grant saw time in the slot at OTAs, but doesnt project for an offensive role.

Drafted him deep into a return yards league in March, didn't expect him to get drafted.

His biggest problem isn't even his size...it's that he can't run routes at all.

All that info and they leave out his height and weight. Just wow. lol.

I googled him and he was listed at one site as 5'6" 161 lbs.

I did too, sorry about that.

Looked electric and was Miami best wr in first pre-season game. I can't believe there's not any hype going with this guy. He's gonna steal punt returning duties and looks like no one can get hands on him when he runs...

if you don't believe me- just watch his highlights from last nights game.

In league's that reward for PR/KR yards, it's looking like Grant will be a threat to Landry and take additional yards away from him there

(Rotoworld) Dolphins sixth-round WR Jakeem Grant caught 4-of-5 targets for 68 yards in his NFL debut. Analysis: He also added 113 return yards. The diminutive dynamo has earned consistent praise for his playmaking ability in camp, and he brought those skills with him for his debut. It is unlikely Grant earns a big enough offensive role to be fantasy viable, but he should make the highlight reel several times as a rookie.

If he can take over punt return duties from Landy (something they want to do) then he will make the final roster. Not sure if they entirely trust him in that role yet.

He is being projected to make the final 53. If they did let him go I would expect some team to snatch him up for their special teams.

If Grant takes over as a kick returner, this makes Damien Williams roster spot a bit less safe, but he can block on ST too, so maybe not.

I think Grant causes bubble WR like Hazel to become expendable.

This kid may be someone to keep an eye on in dynasty circles. He has had a solid training camp.

Carroo is a joke, Landry could be facing a suspension. We may see this kid lining up all over the field. 4.38 speed

Grant got wide open on a go route. The Vikings coverage was terrible on this play.

David Fales who is thought of as not having a big arm had no trouble getting the ball to Grant 30-40 yards downfield.

Its the 4th week of preseason, so obviously Grant is behind some other very good WR in Miami.

If Miami indeed lets Landry walk after the season and doesn't spend a lot of capital replacing him, one of Grant/Carroo/Ford/? could be relevant.

Ford is an interesting player. I haven't heard much about him during preseason but I wasn't looking for information about him either.

How has he done?

I would think Grant has earned some playing time.  Maybe a little Tyreek Hill upside.  Seems like a similar player, but with a lot more talent in front of him.  I'd think they would design a few plays for him to take advantage of his skillset.

Any chance Jakeem earns a bigger role with Landry moving on?  They seemed to make an effort to get him involved at the end of the year, particularly on those wr screens where he can utilize his quicks.  I’m surprised I never saw him in the slot...seems like that would be his best role, but they went out and added amendola.

From Rotoworld:

The Miami Herald expects Jakeem Grant to be a bigger part of the Dolphins' offense in 2018.

That's "whether Jarvis Landry is here or not." Grant caught just three passes before December in 2017, though he did come on in the final month. Ex-OC Clyde Christensen lamented not getting Grant more involved earlier in the season. New OC Dowell Loggains has already talked him up. "His play strength for being a small guy, he plays very physical and very strong," Loggains said. "I’m really excited about him." We believe Loggains, but Grant's 5-foot-7 frame ultimately caps his upside. Feb 1 - 5:57 PM
I think he's got an outside chance.   Verrrry outside, but it's there.

they signed amendola and albert Wilson....so I doubt he gets more touches

Also Loggains was the bears OC last year if I'm correct and while he used cohen right the first couple weeks he/fox went away from that later on so wouldn't count on him planning on making sure to get grant touches

Grant caught his stride on the outside, that's where you'll see him when he gets on the field.

Until the games start and we see rotation, Stills is the WR to have on this squad.

Agree with this take. I think the 3-wide sets are going to be dominated by Stills/Parker/Amendola. Their respective skill sets fit the split X, flanker Z, and slot Y roles really well so it's hard to see how Grant's skill or opportunity translates into a meaningful uptick in usage, despite the fact that the staff seem to be looking to get Grant more involved.

Grant could get work in spreads and empty backfield looks, and maybe carve a rotational spot on pure passing downs. There is also not much competition for the 4th WR (who do the Fins have now? Wilson has speed and was productive, but not an outstanding talent; Carroo has never lived up to his hype and is oft-injured; the rest -- Rashawn Scott, Malcolm Lewis, Francis Owusu, Isaiah Ford, and Morgan Drew - are all practice squad fodder/bubble dwellers who have yet to contribute).

That said, I think all of that is his ceiling. While he's a blazer, I don't see Grant as being a filler for what Landry brought to the table, and without elite route skills to overcome what he lacks in height, I don't think the speed alone makes him a viable contributor this year -- NFL or fantasy-wise -- outside of ST and whatever novelty plays Gase may cook up for him.

Good insight, and yeah... only one to challenge for WR4 looks, besides Grant, would be Caroo.  Absence of Landry doesn't really open doors for Grant.

This guy intrigues me in return yard dynasty. He looked like he belongs on the field end of last year. Clearly a logjam in Miami (barring injury) so 2018 is likely not going to be much, but did be worth an early season flyer.

He just passes the eye test to me. To put another way, as a Pats fan I was happy they went away from him in our game last year. (Corey Grant ticks the same box )

In a return yardage league with CBS and they have him projected as 28th overall at WR. Had no clue who the kid was until I saw that.
