Jamaal Charles (1 Viewer)

I am reading reports that JC was nicked up on Sunday and thus the limited number of touches. Is he 100% for the Broncos? Or is this Haley being an ###?

He finished out the game and was on the field for overtime. Can't imagine it'd be too serious if he finished out the game.

Shanahan claimed McNabb wasn't healthy enough to run the 2-minute offense to cover up his mistake. Haley's had ever-changing stories all year about why Charles doesn't get more carries.

Both of them are liars.

Whether Charles is actually injured or not is less important than what Haley believes. And, clearly, Haley thinks he's not 100%.

"Jamaal’s been fighting through a couple different issues. I have to take my hat off to Jamaal because he’s shown a lot of toughness and fight to get back on the field but there are times that he has to come off and that’s as much his decision as it is anybody else’s.”

That doesn't sound like a coach who's ready to expand JC's role, especially given the fact that this Chiefs team is primed for some meaningful games in late December and early January. It's like we've said since September... right or wrong (and most agree it's wrong), Haley has put a ceiling on Charles that keeps him from being the fantasy dynamo he otherwise would be. I don't see that changing.

he came up gimpy a few times in that game. seemed like mebbe a thigh or knee problem. looked a bit slower at times but that coulda been the turf and he was still far more explosive than thomas jones.

I have been waiting for some info on this...CBS had a blurb on his player profile page about this, but had heard really nothing else about it. I did not catch the game this past week so relying on the pool for updates. As a guy who loves the explosiveness, and a guy I am targeting this week with the trade deadline, I just don't want to end up with some damaged goods. Not sure any homers have any insight on this "injury" or there lack of, but would be appreciated.

This was posted on KCChiefs.com 11 hours ago during a Q&A session:

Q: You don’t talk about injuries at all, if ever. Why did you go into what was hampering RB Jamaal Charles and his injury situation earlier this week?

HALEY: “I don’t know that I did, did I?”

Charles was not on the injury report for Wed. practice.

Jamaal Charles: Charles not on Chiefs' injury report

Nov. 11 - 4:16 pm et

After missing several plays due to a hard hit in Week 9, Jamaal Charles is not listed on the Chiefs' injury report this week.

Charles took his full turn in running back drills Thursday, and there's been no visible sign of an injury during practice. This week's matchup doesn't get much sweeter for Charles. He torched Denver for a career-high 259 yards last year, and the Broncos are 31st in the league in run defense this year.

I thought that it looked real simple to me. On the one play... that the media keeps playing up as a shoulder injury... Charles clearly landed on the ball and knocked the wind out of himself. He was even clutching at his stomach. He came back in almost immediately, and he did get up a little bit gimpy after one play. However.... so many players do that every now and then that it isn't even worth discussing as he was right back out on the field running fine immediately after that as well.

Listened to Adam Tischer (sp?) who is the Chief's beat writer.

To paraphrase what he said...

- The Chiefs brought TJ in for his toughness and because he is a pretty damn good RB.

- Charles keeps pulling himself out of games and that doesn't sit well with Haley...mentioned something similar about Derrick Johnson last year about learning the difference between being injured and playing hurt.

- Said as a whole he loves the Chief's offensive philosophy to make the other team stop the run with 2 very good RBs, but said last week they should have rode Charles more...but if he pulls himself out of the game, there isn't a whole lot they can do.

So, as I mentioned back in weeks 1-3 to all of the people whining about JC not getting the carries, maybe EVERY comment Haley made after they signed TJ reflecting his love of his ability and his TOUGHNESS were just writing on the wall to the JC fans in denial, thinking he would be the lead back? Maybe not, who knows? They are 5-3 and winning th division, which is all Chief's fans care about.

Cue the "well JC is still top 15 RB, so I didn't waste my pick" comments

I keep reading he is a must start because of the Denver matchup and what Charles did to Denver last year. He did torch them for the all-time Chiefs single game rushing record - but the huge obvious difference was he was featured in those Denver games last year. He clearly is in a different situation this year splitting with Jones. TJ will likely have success running against Denver this week too so we might see Charles get 10 touches again. I have been flip flopping all week whether to start Charles as my RB2 over guys who have tougher matchups but don't split carries (like Hillis vs the Jets). There seems to be a lot of warning flags this week. The injury, Haley's less than glowing comments, Haley's love of TJ near the GL and as the "closer" even if he avg less YPC, and Haley seems to put TJ out there if they have the lead and Charles more so when they are behind. I love Charles as much as the next guy and it's clear he's in the discussion for top fantasy backs with CJ2K, AP, and Foster on a per carry basis but I think we see a lot of TJ this week if the Chiefs get up on the Broncos. I am inclined to play guys with less upside like Hillis or McCoy as my RB2 over Charles this week based purely on the fact they will likely get more volume of work even though there is always a chance Charles hits the home run 60yd+ TD. This is as maddening as owning CJ2K in his rookie year when Lendale White was coming in to get the TD's.

Well...why not? He is 14th in my league...I took him as the 16th RB off the board.Right now he is doing about what I drafted him to do as my RB2.Sure, Id like a bit more and think he is capable of it...but what I don't get is why even make a comment like this?

Are you new to the Charles threads? That is the standard response by people that drafted him the top 3 rounds, just beating them to the punch. Also, I bet you didn't draft him as your RB2 thinking he would have 50% or less of the RB touches, did you?

rb11 in my league. i projected him to have 190 carries and 45 catches. hes a bit above pace for touches. underperforming on tds tho.

Perhaps no...but my league doesn't give points for percentage of touches...so I don't care as long as he keeps producing.

Those Charles owners are almost as much of a cliche as the TJ owners who gloat after a 19 carry/32 yard week.Charles is on pace to do exactly what most people projected coming into the year. High ypc, good receiving yards, handful of TDs and probably a bit inconsistent from week to week. Bonus is that Charles has been MORE consistent than TJ. Charles' lowest output in any one game this year is 76 combined yards. TJ has put up a 39, a 19 and a 32.We are all very proud of the TJ owners for getting a guy who splits time at RB late in the draft. It doesn't mean TJ is even close to the asset Charles has been this year in FF.When your worst week of the year is 76 combined yards, I'll trot you out every single week.

The main complaint by JC supporters is the lack of opportunity... go reread some of the Charles threads or look above in post #5 or #6 when referencing Charles lack of touches as "Haley's idiocy"...Also, I assume the retort about TJ owners was directed at me and I will say that I own him on one dynasty team as a RB 4/5 going into the season and have been forced to start him a few times, but I am first and foremost a Chief's fan. We've been hearing from the JC owners since last year about how he is the next Chris Johnson, and while he still could be, they overlooked what he did last year and went out and got TJ. TJ is not a world beater, but he is solid, doesn't fumble (last week not withstanding in a rain storm) and he does the little things that Haley likes. Haley has been glowing about this guy every time he talks about him for 6 months, but the JC owners ignore that and then complain when he doesn't get 15-20 carries per game. Ideally, TJ would get 15 touches and so would JC, but his touches would include 4-5 receptions since he is obviously the big play guy. It isn't complicated, Haley isn't an idiot, they are using a very potent running game to cover up their horrible passing game and should probably be 6-2 and running away with the division.

hes been very consistent actually. only 2 games under 10fpts at 7.6 and 8.

Sure...we would like to see him get more touches.I think it would boost him quite higher than where he is.However, that does not make the guy a wasted pick.

I'm just wondering if JC is slowly entering Haley's doghouse. While he has a great matchup this weekend, if he only gets 10-15 touches he will have to break a long run to be worthwhile. I am going with SJax over JC as I need guaranteed points from my RB, not potluck.

I didn't say it was a wasted pick, but that is a standard response because they have to justify it, because he is a high ceiling type of fantasy player and can make up the points with big plays...but you can't really count on those plays each week without having some kind of let down when he doesn't rip off a huge gain or two.

I personally think Charles is a very good RB, who has a chance to be great, but so is TJ and contrary to what fantasy football websites say, Thomas Jones is not dead. He has played very well and is a leader of that offense...just because he doesn't score a ton or have the eye-popping play every week on Sports Center, doesn't mean the offense doesn't run through him as much as it does Charles, which is the point I've been trying to make since the pre-season.

Charles has been pulling himself out of games and apparently Haley doesn't like it, so his idiocy is that he can't get JC to play through pain and stay on the field to live up to his potential.

We justify it because people keep acting as if he is some bust of a pick. When he is generally performing right in line with where he was drafted.

when the numbers for the U.S. economy are released (usually at 8:30 AM ET), financial markets respond either positively or negatively (by either a lot or a little). there are surveys of the expecations of traders (and economists) and you'd think that it is the difference between the actual number and the expectations in these surveys that would cause the market's reaction. but there is another number, called the "whisper number" on the street, that tells you what traders really think might happen. and markets actually respond to the difference between the actual number and the whisper number. i think that's what's going on here -- people drafted Charles at a particular spot, and that would be analogous to the surveys of expectations. but many hoped he'd do much more -- that he was a fabulous sleeper, and that is analogous to the whisper number. he's performing right about where he should given his ADP, but well below where people hoped he would as a super sleeper.

what makes you believe he is in the "doghouse"? His touches have been pretty consistent all season long.

To hear some tell it, Charles pulled himself out for the entire 1st quarter in Week 1 because he was dinged up. Got nothing to do with Random Todd and his psycho head games.

I really can't believe that any Chief fan thinks that the offense is just as good with Jones in. It is like night and day, really.

A mix of the 2 RBs and what they bring (you know speed vs. picking up blockers, etc...) to complement each other is just fine with this Chiefs fan. The problem has been Cassell and Bowe taking turns seeing who can suck worse. Charles has been dinged consistently during his short career, ankle here, shoulder surgery there, etc... whether it is right or wrong, they obviously don't trust him to carry the load. It really isnt' that hard to understand, itis a RBBC and they are keeping both healthy and making a serious push at a division title. Running Charles into the ground isn't going to accomplish the goals of the team and unfortunately your fantasy team has to suffer.

Are people really buying into this nonsense that Jamaal Charles just keeps pulling himself out of games? lmao

Do you guys even watch football on Sundays?

Nobody is talking about running Charles into the ground. Giving him more carries than a much less effective Jones would be nice. Giving Charles 20 touches a game certainly wouldn't be running him into the ground.

The lying by Haley is funny cuz he hurt his shoulder in the 3rd qtr. and he got most of his work after that

So much for the dream matchup vs Denver.
Unless JC is now a cornerback... I really don't think one was in his control. Hopefully they come out and use the short passing game that Denver will probably be giving them.

JC had 19 touches compared to Jones' 5. Is this likely to continue, or just the result of the Chiefs playing from behind?

Charles did get the start, but I think the disproportionate carries was more the case of the Chiefs playing from behind.I doubt the defense's collapse will alter Haley's view of the Charles/Jones tandem, as Haley seems to have a woody for Jones. That said, Charles owners may take some solace that the disaster MAY cause team brass to realize that they need to change things around. Whether that includes giving more touches to Charles, however, still remains to be seen.
