James Harrison: 1st-ballot Hall of Famer? (1 Viewer)

Yogibear

I'm watching NFL Network and something came across the bottom of the screen that the Steelers have released their alltime sack leader James Harrison.  The man responsible for the only 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Super Bowl?  Why?

Also, if James Harrison has played his last NFL regular-season game (and most likely, he has), should he be a 1st-ballot Hall of Famer?

What a bad look for the Steelers, a couple weeks from the playoffs starting. I get that the best players have to play, and that its a business, but cutting a franchise guy like Harrison on the verge of the playoffs when the team has a real chance to go far if things click...that's a bad look.

He's be allegedly complaining a lot about PT.

But I agree it sucks

Allegedly it was "amicable"

If he signs with NE and helps them win in the playoffs then ya he is HOF bound imho ;) . If he doesn't then screw em

Just kidding folks, haven't followed his career closely enuf to give an opinion on HOF at this juncture.

Ah if true that stinks. At his age you'd think he'd be cool as a snap count rotational guy even if he was playing a lot earlier in the season. Think about how unfortunate it would be if the Steelers won a ring, or even an AFCCG, and they released him week 16 and he wasn't part of it.

I know that's not how the NFL works but damn

The Steelers aren’t worried about a “look”.  They’re focusing on winning in the playoffs.  It would be a lot dumber and a far worse “look” on their part if they were worried about appearance and let a vet tear apart the locker room going into the playoffs - if that was what was happening.  I have no idea if that was the case.

ETA - just saw that his release coincided with Gilbert being reinstated and that Harrison’s contribution this season has been 3 tackles over 5 games.  He was released because he was expendable.  It’s the NFL.  You have to earn your jersey and your playing time.

1st ballot? Is he a lock for the HoF? 5 Pro Bowls, 2 All Pro, DPOY. 58th all-time in Sacks.

27 linebackers are in the HoF. I think about 14 of them are MLB (I bolded the ones I remember off memory being OLB without researching it further.)

Chuck Bednarik (C-LB) 1949-1962
Bobby Bell (also DE) 1963-1974
Derrick Brooks 1995-2008

Nick Buoniconti 1962-1974, 1976
**** Butkus 1965-1973
Harry Carson 1976-1988
George Connor (also DT, OT) 1948-1955
Chris Doleman (DE, LB) 1985-1999
Bill George 1952-1966
Kevin Greene (also DE) 1985-1999
Jack Ham 1971-1982
Chris Hanburger 1965-1978
Ted Hendricks 1969-1983

Sam Huff 1956-1967, 1969
Rickey Jackson LB (also DE) 1981-1995
Jack Lambert 1974-1984
Willie Lanier 1967-1977
Ray Nitschke 1958-1972
Les Richter 1954-1962
Dave Robinson 1963-1974
Joe Schmidt 1953-1965
Junior Seau 1990-2009
Mike Singletary 1981-1992
Lawrence Taylor 1981-1993
Derrick Thomas 1989-1999
Andre Tippett 1982-1993

Dave Wilcox 1964-1974

Gonna say no to HoF.

He was great, but idk if he's HoF or not. As a Steelers fan I'd love to see it, but I'm not sure.

Also, it sucked that we cut him, but he wasn't helping the team and we don't need any negativity during a playoff push. Harrison is one of my fave players ever, but he was getting outplayed by Watt and Dupree.

1st ballot "carry my bags to my car pal, here's a $2 tip buy yourself a coffee turned NFL'er" along with Kurt Warner and Malcolm Butler.

He will feed Steelers all the Pats secrets.

:next level:
Feeding will definitely be happening. BB ain't gonna be starting him, so in exchange for limited playtime like he was already getting in Pitt, and a guaranteed SB appearance, he'll probably be feeding McDaniels every bit he can of the Steelers D.

How stupid are the Steelers?  They must be the only group of people on this planet that didn't see this coming.

If the Steelers and Pats meet in the AFC total game and he does something that flips the game for either side it is going to be hilarious. The Shark Pool will explode the internets. Please let this happen.

I like the signing, the Pats are hurting in the front 7 and can use ANY help they can get. I don't expect much out of him but if he can give them a few plays here and there it is better than what they have now.

I know there are a few Pit fans worried about info he might share but really, what specifically can he tell ne that they don't already know from playing them regularly and all 22 film study?

Agreed...I don't think they need Harrison a month before a game that may or may not happen to tell them they need to stop Brown and Bell...if it is a side-benefit that is a plus but the Pats could use some help in the pass-rush and at this stage of the season there isn't much to choose from...

But it would be foolish to think that it wasn’t partially on Belichick’s mind when making the signing.  End goal is another Super Bowl and the Steelers probably present the biggest threat to that in the AFC.  Belichick will go after any advantage possible.  That’s what makes him the greatest.  I would hope the Steelers will be able to adjust (like they did a week ago despite the loss).

IMO, they need help at LB and it was worth a few bucks to see if he can help them. I doubt they brought him in for intel on the Steelers. They’ve done fine without any tidbits from him. But I do think there is an element of psychological warfare. The Steelers are probably wondering what information is going to change hands. Just another way to get in people’s heads.

Like I said...it maybe a side-benefit but it is not a main reason...the Pats need all the help they can get on D and Harrison has a chance to help...BB is not filling a roster spot for a month to get info on a team he knows as well as any in the NFL...if it was the week before that maybe a different story...

A small bonus perhaps, but imho it would be foolish to think bb's primary reason for signing him was anything other than he felt harrison could help them on the field. If bb didn't think he could help them on the field he wouldn't have signed him. BB may well find out harrision is all done and if so he won't be here long. There r conspiracy theorists who think ne has harrision in a room picking his brain and that is absurd imho. NE hasn't needed harrisons (or any else's) insights to beat pit convincingly and consistently over the past 17 years and they don't need his insights now either; they need his pass rush!

maybe the Stillers are attempting to out Hoodie the Hoodie ... release the guy so he can sign with the Pats, then have him disseminate false info - a double agent, so to speak

Good thing the Steelers got the former 2016 Pats practice squader, Mike Hilton, first. He only had 6 tackles, 3 sacks, and a forced fumble last week. Next level

If he can help the Pats out, then he can help them out. As it is, Pitt looks to have its hands full with Jax in the 2-3 game, so they need to be worried about that.  Meanwhile, the Pats are gonna likely get KC, so they better gameplan for Hill and Kelce and Smith running more so than Pittsburgh.

I wouldn't call Harrison a HOF player at all, let alone 1st ballot.HOVG(Hall of very good) sure. He falls in line with guys like John Abraham or Elvis Dumervil in my opinion. Of course, Charles Haley and Kevin Greene are both in, and I'd put them in that same category as well. Greg Lloyd was better than any of those guys and he isn't in. I hate that Super Bowl rings is a thing that matters for HOF status, as especially in football, individual contributions are the smallest of any major sport.

I'm a big Steeler homer and Harrison is one of my all time favorite players, but no, he is not HOF worthy.  You know those guys who are right on the fringe, almost getting in?  He is a tier below those guys imo.

Harrison's depth of knowledge of the current Steeler playbook needed to extend exactly one play deep.  Maybe they're hoping he picked up pass rush cues on Gilbert or Villanueva in practice, but that's the extent of the knowledge he's going to be able to traffic.

As for HOF: not in a world where Randy Gradishar and Chuck Howley are still buying tickets to get in.  Maybe he and Suggs can get a package deal and visit together some day.
