Chiefs | Allen Demoted to Second Team, Wilkerson Takes OverMon, 15 Aug 2005 18:18:16 -0700Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs DL Jared Allen has been demoted to the second team defense. DL Jimmy Wilkerson took Allen's place at right defensive end. "Jimmy Wilkerson has been doing everything right," head coach **** Vermeil said. "Sometimes when guys are doing everything right - sometimes not better but everything on every snap consistently right - you give them a little reward." The Chiefs were unhappy with the way Allen played in last week's exhibition opener at the Minnesota Vikings.

Chiefs insiders and those that closely follow the team have been predicting for quite some time now that Allen would not duplicate last year's numbers. Guess they were on to something...I doubt very much if it is a motivational ploy, but that's just one man's opinion and certainly not based in fact.

Tough call here. At first glance it looked like a true demotion, but if you read further, the article moves away from that.

Asked whether Wilkerson would start in Saturday night's exhibition game against Arizona at Arrowhead Stadium, Vermeil said, "He might. He deserves a reward."
To me that sounds like Vermeil was out to prove a point. It sure doesn't sounds like Vermeil is sold on Wilkerson replacing Allen in the starting rotation, since he's not even sure he's going to start him in a preseason game.Regardless, this is at the very least a red flag for Allen owners that Vermeil is not currently pleased with his progress. But I personally believe Allen starts opening day.

Hmmm.. first I've heard of that!! This is most certainly a "lite a fire under his ###" coaching move. The big knock on Allen from what I hear is that he is a liability on runs. So it very possible for him to play mostly in passing situation. Actually it looks like Allen may have gotten the message...Allen making presence felt

Jimmy Wilkerson is actually no slump/chump. Heading into the '03 draft, Wilkerson ran a sub-4.8/40 at 270lbs+. For comparative purposes, Allen was a 4.9/40 guy heading into the '04 draft. Wilkerson is somewhat compact and stocky at 6'2", while Allen is the opposite at 6'6". Some draft reports stated Wilkerson would have been a high pick in the '04 draft...if he would not have declared early.I agree with most. It will be tough to keep Allen and his nine sacks on the bench, especially on passing downs. 1st and 2nd downs may be a different story.

can someone post what's actually on the newspaper article. I don't have a subscription. Thanks in advance

Allen worked with the second team.“Jimmy Wilkerson has been doing everything right,’’ coach **** Vermeil said. “Sometimes when guys are doing everything right, sometimes not better but everything on every snap consistently right, you give them a little reward.’’Asked whether Wilkerson would start in Saturday night’s exhibition game against Arizona at Arrowhead Stadium, Vermeil said, “He might. He deserves a reward.’’But the move appears to be aimed more at Allen than Wilkerson. The Chiefs were unhappy with the way Allen played in last week’s exhibition opener at Minnesota. He missed a tackle against Minnesota’s Mewelde Moore, allowing the running back to go for 50 yards. Allen also blew his assignment on the play, which the Chiefs view as an equal or bigger crime.“It was a breakdown in discipline,’’ Vermeil said. “You have to do just what you’re supposed to do. Someone goes out and tries to make a bigger play out of it and he winds up breaking the discipline of the defense.’’

He tossed running back McKenzie Smith to the ground on one running play, covered a lot of ground to push Smith out of bounds on another and would have had a sack of quarterback James Kilian had practice rules allowed for full contact.Allen led the Chiefs last season as a rookie with nine sacks. He was demoted from his starting defensive end spot when the Chiefs were unhappy with his play in last week’s preseason opener in Minnesota.“We know what he can do,’’ coach **** Vermeil said. “We’ve just got to get him to do it all the time on our terms within our scheme. He’s a fine football player. He’s already proved that.“I would expect him to be a little upset. But you’re evaluated every practice on every snap. I think Gunther (Cunningham) wanted to get his attention to the details. He will be fine, believe me.’’Allen’s replacement, Jimmy Wilkerson, also had a would-be sack of Damon Huard. The Chiefs cut the practice short by about 30 minutes because so many players are out with injuries. Rookie linebacker Derrick Johnson, who has a sore foot, did not practice, and Vermeil was unsure whether he would work this afternoon.

from what i know of jared allen he's a high motor, never stop type of player...if this is true - why the need for a motivational ploy?

Chiefs | Allen Playing Well Since DemotionTue, 16 Aug 2005 21:11:16 -0700KCChiefs.com reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach **** Vermeil says DL Jared Allen has performed well since being demoted to the second string. "He's a competitor. You're evaluated every practice on every snap," Vermeil said. "I think (defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham) wanted to get his attention to detail, and how he fits and how he does things. He will be fine, believe me."
