We have all talked about him, but it has taken me one day of watching his film for me to identify two things:
1) South Carolina has had some of the worst QB'ing I have ever seen at the college level. Simply. Horrible.
2) Cook is unbelievable.
I was flabbergasted when I saw the Titans traded up for a TE after getting Stevens so early last year, and franchising Scaife.
the only thing I can guess is that Stevens was brought in a solely Ben Hartstock sort of role as strictly a blocker, which he has been excellent at.
the the titan's running attack and strength of O-line, it is not even a problem to give away your strong side on any given play. plus, counter-action type plays become more effective because of the LBs tendency to drift.
clearly, crumpler is on his way out and is nowhere near the player he was even 2 years ago. the year before he got to tennessee, he was already starting to fizzle.
not sure what to make of scaife in the whole situation. In cook, you trade up for him....you basically have a Megatron clone that plays TE but has sick jukes and soft hands like a WR.
I think that he fits perfectly into a situation in which opposing defenses will load the box (especially with a true downfield threat in Nate Washington to keep the saftey honest.)
If you watch his highlights, his YAC are absolutely dynamic after making a reception between the hash marks in the soft spot and also on deep dig routes. The exact places that they will be perfectly set to get him in the Titans offense that most TE's can not get to in time to be anything other than a third read. Youtube some clips of his and check it out for yourself.
He's a guy you cannot afford to pass up in dynasty even if scaife manages to sign his tender (they can still rescind it) they obviously have no plans of signing him to a long term contract for whatever reason. You can't draft two TEs in the first 3 rounds two years in a row, give up a 2010 2nd round draft pick and then just have 6 of these guys on the roster. Not unless you plan on your QB eventually being Vince Young who throws to TEs an overwhelming amount of the time...and barring an injury to Collins, I do not personally see that happening. Seeing packages with VY and Chris Johnson in the backfiled with a guy like Cook to throw to in the wild cat would scare people. hell, I'm scared thinking about it and i like the titans.
I am a huge Texas fan, and watched Scaife in college..If you followed his career, his injury history is so bad that Mack Brown actually recommended that he quit football at one point. he spent 6 years in college and spent two injured. he has remained relatively healthy in the NFL, but he'll always have that stigma as a guy who has a ton of mileage.
I'm calling my shot on this one. Cook is even worth a late round flyer in re-draft. they'll take 4-5 games of splitting time with whoever is there to figure it out....but jared cook is the new sickness.
