So we have Romo and Bledsoe, Cutler and Plummer, Rosenfels and Carr... so I'm wondering if any Skins fans would like to see Campbell with Brunell stinking up the joint... again.
No. And I don't think he stunk up the joint. Based on what I saw last night, QB is the least of their worries. Secondary and D line have no depth and special teams coverage units stink. So we have Romo and Bledsoe, Cutler and Plummer, Rosenfels and Carr... so I'm wondering if any Skins fans would like to see Campbell with Brunell stinking up the joint... again.
You have three offensive coaches and if thats the best they can come up with is screens to Santana I would be worried.No. And I don't think he stunk up the joint. But Sanders is a genius!!You have three offensive coaches and if thats the best they can come up with is screens to Santana I would be worried.
They had four plays of 20 yards or more, and 2 more of 15 yards or more. They threw both short and deep, and Brunell showed that he has the arm to make those throws on time and accurately. The passing game looked out of synch and I expect it to improve. The "best they can come up with" comment seems like you're in a hurry to shovel dirt on them. The first real game in a new offense seems a bit early for that, don't you think? You have three offensive coaches and if thats the best they can come up with is screens to Santana I would be worried.No. And I don't think he stunk up the joint. Well I wouldn't exactly call three years of this offense being together a bit early... This teams successes and failures have always hinged on Brunells shoulders and he has come up limp more often than not. They had four plays of 20 yards or more, and 2 more of 15 yards or more. EDIT- I'll give you a better response. When Brunell's been healthy, he's an above average NFL QB. You saw that last year by and large (until the last 1.5 games and the playoffs when his knee got injured). When he's hurt - and he's suffered leg injuries both early in 2004 and late in 2005 - he stinks up the joint because he can get nothing on this throws. The difference is night and day. As for your response, you're completely ignoring that they've got a completely new offense there with Saunders. They did nothing last night but talk about him and his new 700 page playbook and the fact that Brunell was still working to absorb it. Obviously, they need to do better than they did last night if they want to go anywhere this season, but to disregard these circumstances, no matter how much continuity the team has seems silly to me.Well I wouldn't exactly call three years of this offense being together a bit early... Good counter... I mean the so called "offensive genius" of Joe Gibbs certainly is brought out with his decision to use Brunell as his guy the last three years.Well I wouldn't exactly call three years of this offense being together a bit early... are you aware of the fact that Gibbs is not calling the plays?? Or are you bashing just to bash? Brunell does exactly what he needs to in that offense, just don't turn the ball over, manage the game. He is a smart guy, and I'm only worried if he goes down to injury while playoff hopes are alive. But to answer the OP: I would like to see Jason Campbell get some work in if, and only if, the Redskins find themselves unable to make the playoffs.Good counter... If that's true, what a horrible waste of draft picks. You don't take a guy you need to groom for 2 seasons for him to even fall into serious consideration for a starting role when he's competing against guys like Brunell and Collins. As far as Campbell replacing a healthy Brunell, don't count on it unless it's late in the year and they're out of the playoffs, and maybe not even then.
I guess it depends upon what you mean by "have to groom". Based upon what I saw from him in the preseason, which looked to me like he'd improved a lot from last year and was far more confident and comfortable, he would have started for most teams this year had he been drafted by them. He's "ready" in the sense that he can start games and run the offense, but nobody figures his first year will be anything better than mediocre. The 'Skins want to win the division this year and make a run at the Super Bowl. Whether you agree with their capabilities in that regard or not, Brunell gives them the best chance to do that as an experienced guy who can still make plays (when healthy) and - most importantly - who will avoid mistakes. Besides, I don't see at this point what they lose by having him on the bench this year. QB's who have waited a couple of years to play don't seem to have suffered and my own impression is that most seem to benefit from the wait so that they can adjust to play at the NFL level. Beyond this year, I agree that he'll need to see the field to develop further, but this year I'm fine as a Redskins fan with him sitting. If that's true, what a horrible waste of draft picks. Skins d is going to be a liability this year. Last night was only a preview of things to come. THey have no depth on the d line. THey have no depth in the secondary. The O is going to have to WIN games. Not enough to not turn it over. Campbell needs to be put into the linup and the team needs to live or die with him. He is young enough and has a good enough arm to make the plays the skins need to make in order to win. If they don't do it, they are going to be in the exact same situation next year. btwSkins are not a SB team. Too many weaknesses to be considered that. They will be lucky to win a wild card spot. Take lumps with Campbell now and be happy later. Perhaps when TO and Dallas have abused the secondary and the Skins are 0-2 Gibbs will wise up and do the right thing.I guess it depends upon what you mean by "have to groom". Agreed. Campbell needs to start now. Waste of time to have Brunell in there. If not, Campbell was a waste of a draft pick. THeyt could have gotten depth on the o line or the d line or the secondary with the pick they wasted on Campbell last year. At this stage, he WAS a waste of a draft pick. Skins had too many other needs when they made the decision to trade the picks for Campbell. Last year they got lucky and key players like springs remained healthy for most of the year. They have not been so lucky this year and their poor offseason decisions are coming back to haunt them.If that's true, what a horrible waste of draft picks. Skins didnt have significantg injuries the past couple of years and their weaknesses on d didn't show. Last night they did show. The depth on the d line is nonexistant. Carter got pushed around last night just as he did in the preseason. Without Springs there, the blitzing was kept to a minimum. What we saw is that the d line is no good when the corners can't operate in single coverage. Bottom line-the skins don't have the corners to run the d they want to run. I don't think Brunell sucks and I don't think he's washed up. I do think that he can no longer get the ball down field consistently. Pretty bad sign when a rookie safety doesn't get picked on all night long. Minnesota had no problem going down field against the skins backup corners and safety. Skins don't have as good of a shot because they lack the depth that other teams have. They are top heavy. The starters are making big bucks and all they have left is cash for guys who nobody else wants. Not a good situation for them. I agree that if they stay completely healthy they can make a run. Since that never happens(and they already have injuries) I don't consider them to be contenders. Philly and the Gmen are clearly better. Not sure about Dallas. I am sure that Dallas will go to town on those corners sunday night. TO has to be licking his chops. Bledsoe may save the skins in the long run but TO and Glenn should have big games. They have more d-line depth this year than they ever have since Gibbs' return.Skins d is going to be a liability this year. Assuming Springs in the lineup, they're no worse than the last two years when they had Springs and Smoot/Rogers, backed up by Walt Harris, Ade Jimoh and a cast of thousands. Every team has holes. Nobody's solid everywhere. Unless you think (as many obviously do) that Brunell simply sucks and is washed up, something I disagree with if he's healthy, I fail to see how the 'Skiins don't have as good of a shot as anyone at making a Super Bowl run.
I don't think the Skins can make a serious run with Jason leading the way this year. If the playoffs at any point seem unattainable, I want him out there right away. No use wasting more time with Brunell.
Washington didn't lose the game last night, Minnesota won the game. Al Saunders offense is written in Chinese, it takes a while for it to gel.

Things I disagree with:THey have no depth in the secondary.
with Brunell stinking up the joint... again.

Things I disagree with:Skins are a playoff team. Giants and Philly are clearly better and Dallas will take at least one game from them. Skins will finish no better than 3rd in that division and have already lost to a team that's probably going to have a similar record. Get the kid in there and live and die with him. Brunell's inability to make plays is going to kill this team.Obviously the coaches don't have much faith in him or they would have been taking more shots down field. That they didn't even attempt to exploint a weakness in the minn secondary is cause for alarm. If Campbell was worh what they gave up to get him, he can lead this team to the playoffs. If not, at least you have him in shape for next year. Mark my words, the skins will go out and spend bucks in the offseason to try to cover their obvious weaknesses and they will be "ready to win now" once again. Only Campbell will still be witout experience and we'll be having this same discussion. You'll be saying "skins want to win now. They need to keep brunell in there".I'll be saying "if he was worth the pick he needs to be playing or else we'll be in this same situation next year".Things I agree with:

You'll be asking the same thing next year. He's not learning a damn thing sitting on the bench. I think he has already mastered the art of holding the clip board. He's stagnating and Brunell is getting older by the day.If you really think that Brunell is the difference between the SKins being a playoff team or sitting home, you don't have a very high opinion of Campbell or the team. Fair enough. Simply state that he was a bad draft choice(which he was if the attitude was to always "win now". Win now teams should not be drafting qb's in the first round. THey should be using those picks to BUILD A TEAM. Sign a vet in the offseason and go with the draft picks). Of course this coaching staff has done nothing but try to "Win now" and it continues to harm their long term future. I've kicked back and watched teams like PItt outdraft my team and then watched them continually make the playoffs and then win it all spending a fraction of the cash. This has been going on since Gibbs left the first time. It continues to this very day. Why? Because of the "we need to win it all now" attitude. This team was poorly coached in the preseason and in the offseason. They wasted too much cash on the two new wide outs when the biggest areas of need were along the o and d lines as well as the secondary. Signing El or Lloyd would have been fine. Both was a waste. And the waste cost them. I don't like watchign the skins get pushed around. That's what I saw out there all preseason and all last night. THey were outplayed on both sides of the ball in the one place it really counts-THE TRENCHES.Skins used to dominate teams in the 4th quarter. They are such a fragile team that they cannot afford to lose a single player on either line or in the secondary. Playoff teams aren't built that way. Also, if it takes several years to learn the complex o of Saunders and you want to "WIN NOW", why support the hiring of Saunders. Think about it. Brunell admits he doesn't know the Offense. If that's the case, why are they wasting time with it this year? Why not stick to what Brunell DOES know? Campbell is going to go through the same thing next year or the year after that. Put him in there and let him go. If they are a playoff team, they will be there with Campbell. While I recognize that Campbell can only develop so much without playing, how exactly is it harmful or "a waste" to have him sit for one more year?
Boy, where to go with this. I'm no Campbell hater or anything, but from the appearance of things "have to groom" would probably be the nicest way to put it. More to the point, the team currently views him as a liability if starting Campbell makes it harder for them to win than starting Brunell. That would place his current skill set somewhere between Cody Pickett and Mark Brunell, 18 months into the program. I disagree totally that he could start for other teams when he is not good enough to unseat Brunell. I'll stand by calling those wasted picks. The only way you use 3 picks is if you are drafting a difference maker, not a guy you hope to take 3 seasons to turn into the next Mark Brunell.I guess it depends upon what you mean by "have to groom". Based upon what I saw from him in the preseason, which looked to me like he'd improved a lot from last year and was far more confident and comfortable, he would have started for most teams this year had he been drafted by them. So you're basically saying he should be playing based solely upon the price the team paid to get him? I think that would be a crazy way to go about making such decisions. It also ignores the status of the team right now. Also, right or wrong the 'Skins view draft picks as being less valuable than many other teams do, so they quite willingly trade them away to either acquire a particular player in the draft (Campbell, McIntosh) or to trade for a young player with a few years under his belt (Lloyd, Portis, Moss). Brees got his team to the playoffs in 2004 and the team stuck with him despite having first overall pick Rivers on their roster. I heard no one claiming that that somehow wasted Rivers or caused him to stagnate. Likewise I heard nobody claiming that Chad Pennington was ruined by waiting for two years to start behind Vinny Testaverde. In fact, both players are noteworthy for being able to hit the ground running when they finally got their opportunities (admittedly, it's very early for Rivers). I happen to like Campbell and as was stated in another thread he has a lot of statistical things about his college career that historically indicate that he should be successful at this level. He was still raw last year, and there's enough about this game that a second year won't hurt him either. Plain and simple, under the best of circumstances I can't imagine Campbell throwing more TD's than INT's this year, whereas Brunell's career ratio is 174/102, which is actually worse than last year's 23/10 ratio, which was a career high for Brunell. None of us know where this NFC East race will end up, but right now this team is aiming for the division title and the playoffs, and there's no good argument to make that Campbell is better able to deliver that than is Brunell.Boy, where to go with this. I'm no Campbell hater or anything, but from the appearance of things "have to groom" would probably be the nicest way to put it.
The argument is in the fact that the Skins need to suck it up and win or lose with Campbell. THey are not a SB contender. They are in about the same boat Pitt was in when they put Big Ben in a couple of years ago(actually, Pitt was better then than the skins are now but..). If he's not as good now as Big Ben was as a rookie, he was a waste of 3 picks. Actually, he was a waste anyway. They should have used those picks OR traded for a guy who could help immediately. They did neither. They gave away picks for a project. THis team isn't deep enough or good enough to waste picks on projects. With the exception of a couple of high picks and cooly, Gibb's drafts have been atrocious. Their late picks either don't make the team or they are around for one year and then cut. We are seeing the results on the field. No depth at key positions(including QB).So you're basically saying he should be playing based solely upon the price the team paid to get him? I wasn't very clear by what I meant as to the bolded part. I'm not claiming that he's better than most starters out there right now. I'm simply making the point that this team is taking a path most other teams wouldn't take with a guy like Campbell by NOT rushing him into the lineup despite the investment they've made in him. It's a product of Gibbs' level of job security, the length of his commitment to the team as both its coach and its President, and Gibbs' devotion to veteran QB's being better able to lead teams than young QB's. It doesn't imply to me that Campbell is disappointing.Boy, where to go with this. And doing so has cost this team. Gibbs could have used those picks on players who were ready to go. he didn't. He chose to pay out the rear for a project. Now we have an aging qb who is average most of the time. A high priced rookie(still a rookie until he at least takes a snap in a real game) and a complete BUM(collins) whose only saving grace is that he supposedly knows the Offense(translation-he can't actually play but when they line him up, he knows were he's supposed to go with the ball ).I wasn't very clear by what I meant as to the bolded part. He's not even THE backup. He's more like backup-b. They have so little confidence in him that they won't replace Brunell with him if MB goes down in a game. This coaching stafff is almost laughable. For all of their "genius" they are more like the gang who couldn't shoot straight. Very sad.Backup Qb is what you call him.
