Couldn't cover his own shadow on a cloudy day! How many times can you be torched on the same type of play. Reminded me of the Denver/Indy game last year where Wayne made Darrent Williams look completely terrible. Any thoughts?

And by the way for all you homers out there, I am making an observation based on facts, not that Darrent Williams was murdered, so don't go there.

Where were the safeties?

Not to say David played well or anything, but leaving him alone on Harrison or Wayne is just stupid. Leaving most corners alone on one of those guys is stupid.

the safeties were busy biting on underneath routes by the slot receiver... blame the coaches and safeties all you want, but allowing 3 tds is plain bad... especially considering waynes 2nd TD was a replay of harrison's catch earlier in the game... especially considering david covered wayne and harrison everyday in practice the last few seasons...

Are we playing "Finish the Sentance"?

Jason David...

...was lit up more than Teddy Kennedy on a Senate break.

...should be on Indy's payroll.

...is just like Champ Bailey...only just the opposite.

..should wear an asbestos jersey if he's gonna keep getting torched like that.

Even funnier if you check out Jason David's player page on NFL.com. There is a pre-game interview with him on the left of the page.

... either that or they were cheating toward the line of scrimmage to help the front seven hold IND to 5.6y/c. There was plenty of blame to go around. David. Brees. Will Smith. No Saints played well with possible exceptions of Eric Johnson(Sell high - Indy was just giving NO anything they wanted underneath once they got the lead) and Weatherford. When your punter was your highlight you know it was a rough night. Of course it will also help when Davis starts covering the Wade/Jackson connections of the NFC instead of Manning/Wayne.

He looked like Deangelo Hall after a hair cut.

Yeah he got burned, but he got burned by the best. I'm sure from practicing against him for a few years they learned some of his moves and used them against him.

 For one, this is the first game of the first week of the season. Things can go unexpectedly awry, for a single player or an entire team. Bad, bad night for him, fo sho, and there is much truth to it being exacerbated by no safety support. But in all the talk about how David should have been more attuned to Wayne and Harrison's behaviors, not one word was said about them knowing David'd weaknesses in coverage. Interesting take.

anyone else notice that he didnt even seem to be watching the WR? He was always looking at the line of scrimage. The guy sucks................. and probably cost me this weeks game since I was playing against Manning.

Jason David sucked when he was at Indy ... he was always screwing up. I could not believe the Saints took him ,I was celebrating when he left.

Kind of a pick your poison situation for the Saints. Personally I think you've got to take away the easy big play first.

defintely NOT David-esque of 'David and Goliath' fame.

poor guy was left alone with 2 of the very best WRs in the game. Considering the Saints had all off season to prepare, this was a miserable defensive game plan/effort againt the most watched team in professional football. Im pretty sure the film was available to study, and Im pretty sure they knew what the Colts were going to do. That whole team just flat stunk, and Manning was at his surgical best last night, and he also knew David was a defector. Im sure somewhere in the back of his offensively-diabolical mind, he was aware of that.

That was the most disappointing thing for me last night. Of all the things I envisioned happening, I never thought that Sean Payton would get outcoached to that degree. The cherry on top being the utter lack of second half adjustments by the Saints.

The middle of the field was wide open for the Saints, but they kept wanting to run wide or get the ball in Bush's hands. Bush is a great player, but if the "D" gives you 8-10 yd passes in the middle of the field take it and march with it. They tried it occassionally, but not nearly enough IMHO.

Having just watched the TD passes once again... where the hell were they?Terrible. Its freakin' Harrison and Wayne with Manning.

You must provide safety help towards the end zone or they will assuredly score.
That was my thought watching the game. On at least a couple of those plays it sure looked as though he was looking around like he expected inside/deep help that never came.

I agree, but he was outcoached by a veteran coach. Payton doesnt yet have the advanced doctorate imo that Dungy has. And Payton probably didnt have much to do with any of the Saints' halftime defensive adjustments. But to come out after the half, and not figure out a way to get Brees better protection or get those playmakers in better position to make plays was just stunning. Im not sure I ever saw Brees throw a single deep bomb to a receiver. You absolutely have to do that against the Colts. You have to take your shots down the field and stretch that D. I would have sent Bush of all people long and thrown at least 2 bombs his way just to dare the Colts to cover him. Coltson should have had a height/physicality mismatch for the secondary deep down the seam. Didnt happen. Patten's speed wasnt utililized. There was no imagination in that gameplan at all. It could certainly have been the result of bad protection, but the aggression just wasnt there. They seemed passive all night.

Spliting out Dallas Clark in the slot, the safties needed to account for him. LBs coverage was terrible last night as well.He was caught looking in the back field which you can do in the cover two, but not in man to man. I don't see how the Saints were certain he could make the transition. After seeing him in the preseason, I think it was a matter of the Saints not having any one else to play then J. David earning the spot.

Shouldn't one's knowledge of the others cancel each other out?

Rod Woodson just broke this down on NFL network and you are exactly right. its started with the LBs and forced the Ss to cover the underneath stuff.

I think two of the 3 passing TDs came on blitzes. During the game, the safeties were cheating some to offer better run support. Addai and the Indy O-line were handling the NO D-line and LB's pretty easily, after all. Manning took advantage of those opportunities. To my eyes, the game plan for the two teams was pretty conservative early on. Neither team wanted to give up the deep ball. The short routes and rushing were allowed.

In general, if you're playing against Manning, you could probably just post a similar thread and change the name of the DBs getting lit up week to week. He aint the #1 FF QB for nothing. Goober's a pretty good QB.

Let's see who gets to burn him down the road:

Week 2: start Galloway

Week 3: start B. Jones

Week 4: He's getting yelled at in meetings

Week 5: Steve Smith goes izzzoff

Week 6: start Branch

Week 7: Joe Horn starts his comeback

Week 8: start DJax

I'll leave it alone now.

I think this thread answers the question in another thread about why do teams leave Dallas Clark open in the slot. Who do you double? You can't double everyone and Wayne, Harrison or Clark 1 on 1 is a mismatch everytime. Add to that they have the best QB in football picking out the mismatch and last night is the result. If I were a DB playing the Colts I don't think I would be able to sleep the whole week.

Yikes, that Week 5 matchup is looking deadly right now.

Too bad he's not playing. Out with a broken arm.

Too bad? You mean it's going to get worse?

My thought: Shadows are usually more prevalent and also easier to see on brighter days. He should start out by practicing covering them on sunny days, work his way up to covering them on the cloudy days, and then eventually, with enough work and effort he'll be ready for the night games as well.
