Jason Elam (1 Viewer)

Last year the Falcons lost at least 3 games because they couldn't kick field goals. Fans who were upset about missing Mason Crosby in the draft last year are ECSTATIC over the news of signing Denver Broncos legend "Jason Elam!"

The new front office in Atlanta seems to be making great moves in the off season. Who needs "Parcells."

There goes Elams 100 point season steak.

I was shocked by this. I didn't even know Elam was a FA. And for teams to pass on him... wow.

He's been an elite kicker for years now. Signing with ATL makes sense though. He grew up here,

and even kicked for a rival high school and graduated the same year as me...

Great signing for them imo...

I don't think other teams passed on him.I think he wanted the ATL and the ATL wanted him.

Denver offered a deal - Elam passed.Atlanta offered more guaranteed money, and Elam is from the Atlanta area. If Denver wasn't going to get him, ATL was certainly #2.

Elam's 38 years old. I don't think he's got that much left. One of the only times leaving the outdoors for a dome might hurt his long distance.

really? kicker is the one position where it's not uncommon to see guys still produce into their early forties. don't have the stats off the top of my head to backup my BS, but I'm thinking I'm pretty safe with that assessment.we both can appreciate Pat Leahy, no?

Accuracy usually sticks, but distance definitely begins to fade each season.

I agree with you that the leg strength goes and you've probably forgotten more about FF than I know, so I'm not trying to show you up at all, sometimes kickers can fall throught the cracks...I went and grabbed one of the first fossil kickers I could find and check this out...

Gary Anderson rocked well into his forties

his last two years were with TEN in 03-04 and was 44-45 y/o

he was 100% both years between 30 - 39 (03: 12/12; 04: 4/4) and in the 70s from 40 - 49 both years (03: 10/14; 04: 9/12)

his career year was in 98 (39 y/o) with the Vikes where he went 100% from 30 out...

30 - 39: 9/9

40 - 49: 12/12

50+ 2/2

He was 68% from 40 - 49 in his 40s (40 - 45) not bad... (he sucked from 50+; 1/5)

I don't know, I'm 41, so maybe you touched a nerve, but I think Elam may be an exception to the rule, we'll see.

peace.

Maybe it's just me, but throwing $9 million (I know that not all that is guaranteed) at a 38 year old kicker, albeit a good one, seems like an odd move for a team in full-fledged rebuilding mode.

Actually the 2007 season:DENVER27/31 FG33/33 XP114 Points126 Total Pts PossibleATLANTA26/34FG25/25 XP103 Points127 Total Pts possibleI own him in my money league and we don't count for FG distance, just made/missed, so I'm happy.

Elam's been money for years, but his distance has definitely dropped off. In 2007, Shanahan passed up on the long FG in favor of trying to convert a 4th and long several times - I think that speaks to Shanahans fading confidence.

One other downside - Elam has not done kick-offs in years, instead focusing on FG's only. That has forced the Broncos to either keep a kicker for KO's only, eating another critical roster spot, or have the punter do kick-offs. Without looking at the data, opposing teams starting field position for Denver has been one of the worst in the league for several years.

I wish Elam luck as a Falcon - as a Bronco fan, it has always been nice to know that we have pretty much a sure thing in the kicking game, which is a luxury that few teams have. I hope the Broncos are willing to find a suitable replacement early in this draft, as they did when they drafted Elam in the 3rd.

Ya, isn't that ironic. Usually going to a dome is a good thing, but if you're in a league that awards bonus points for 50 plus yard field goals, it was kinda nice having Elam for that potential.Being 38, I'd like to know how much leg he has in him, the dude does get dinged quite a bit for a kicker (his name is on the report anyway, could be a Shanny thing). I'd also like to know how many road 50 plus kicks he's had in the last 3 seasons to kinda gauge what he does have left in the tank in terms of leg outside of mile high.

Last 3 years 50 yard field goals for Elam:2007 Home 0 Away 12006 Home 1 Away 0 (didn't attempt any 50 plus on the road)2005 Home 2 Away 0 (didn't attempt any 50 plus on the road)I think we gave Elam a little too much credit for the Mile High thing here. In the last 5 years, he hasn't hit a field goal past 52 yards. In fantasy, I don't think he cracks the top 12 this year, which is basically starter material for most of your fantasy leagues. IMO, he's a reserve guy you'd throw in on a bye or a good matchup for him or awful matchup for your regular starting kicker.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Then again, with Elam, they might lose games 28-16 instead of 28-7. :goodposting:

This is what stung me at first (not a Broncos fan). For the last 15 years (or whowever long he has been there), they have had a sure thing at kicker. Many other good franchises (see Dallas) have turned over kickers every couple of years and even have been snake-bitten by the bad one...enough to cost them a playoff spot or playoff positioning. I think his time is winding down, so I do not blame the Broncos for letting him go, I just think if the "thin air" does not prove to help kickers as much as we may believe, Denver may be in for some trouble unless they find a very good replacement.

Its gonna be wierd not seeing him kick in a Broncos uni. Wasn't he the only remaining member of the '98 Super Bowl team currently on the Broncos?

ETA: Rod Smith/Tom Nalen> are they done?

Morton Anderson played until he was 174 so Elam should have a few good years left.

Who takes over for Elam in DEN?
Toss up right now. Prater is already on the roster. Carney and Mare are available in free agency. I would think they go with an established kicker over Prater or a rookie.
I don't think they go with an established vet. They've been kicking (no pun intended) around Ernster for a few years as a kickoff specialist/punter - they might give him a shot. They'll probably draft someone, hopefully early, and we'll have a good old fashioned training camp battle.
