Wondering what everyone thinks will happen with Jason Witten now that Dallas spent a high pick (2nd)on Anthony Fasano , TE, ND..

Does Witten see a drop in stats for 2006? Does he become the blocking TE now that Campbell is in Detroit?

Jason Witten, what becomes of him with Fasano on board

Harder to cover?????

I had a thread on this yesterday.

Most seem to think that Fasano will take over Campbell's role as the 2nd TE/blocker, enabling Witten to go out on more pass patterns. That said, Fasano has good hands himself, so he may get some passes thrown his way if Witten, Owens and Glenn are covered.

Keep in mind though that Fasano is just rookie and will have to earn PT a la Witten when he also was a rookie.

Dallas signed Ryan Hannam to fill the Campbell/blocker role, so I'd imagine they drafted him for depth.

As I said in another post, from what I am hearing they are planning to use Fasano in two TE sets, especially in the red zone, to keep the defense from keying as much on one side of the formation and to give them someone else to be accountable for. Fasano is an above average blocker and receiver from what I understand. This could all be totally errant, but it's what I am hearing.

Fasano was perhaps the best blocking TE in the draft. He dropped because of concerns about a back injury and because there were better pass catchers (though he's certainly decent).

Fasano will help Witten's numbers and give Bledsoe an additional target when needed.

I see Witten going to high ADP wise currently. TE is very deep this year and my strategy in general will be to take the 10th TE or so after I've filled my slots at QB/RB/WR.

Here is the crux of what I said in the other article:

There are 5 skill positions on offense outside of the QB. Parcells is big on having threats that the defense has to honor at every position. Dallas had good threats at 4 spots with TO, Glenn, Witten, and JJ/Barber. Their options at TE#2/FB were Ryan Hannan, Brett Pierce, and Lousaka Polite. None of those guys threatened a defense.

Fasano is a guy that should be a threat to the defense. He has ok speed, but has good moves and good hands. He should be able to beat linebackers in coverage. With Witten on the other side, he's not likely to face team's best coverage linebacker anyway.

So with Fasano at the #5 skill position, Dallas can create matchup problems for a defense. If you go nickle to stop TO/Glenn/Witten, then Dallas runs or hits Fasano on some short patterns. If the defense moves up to play the run, then Glenn and TO go deep. Fasano allows Dallas to be very diversified in their base offense. Defenses won't know if runs or passes are coming. Every skill position will be able to do something to hurt the D. That wasn't always the case this past year.
