Haven't paid much attention to "portable" speakers and noticed the Jawbone today at Worst Buy. They had two styles ($150 - $250) where the Pill also has two sizes but they weren't set up ($200 - $300).

Was wondering what people think about these and which way have you gone as far as speakers go. I'm not much of an audio person so comments are welcome. Not concerned with overpowering bass or anything in that realm. Radio capabilities might be good to have.

Depending on the color, Amazon has these for much cheaper. Some are normal price but others can be much cheaper.

My buddy has one of these JBL's and its awesome. We had a weekend of partying and concerts about 6 months back and he brought it along. Our hotel room was on the 2nd floor, it was accidentally knocked off the railing and it fell and hit the blacktop in the parking lot. I thought for sure it wouldve been busted, but the thing was still blasting tunes like a champ :headbang:

I wanted to start one of these threads. I bought the Mrs a bluetooth speaker for her birthday so we could enjoy music in other rooms of the house without breaking the bank for a new stereo, this solved a lot of problems.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the TDK A33 before you go spending 2x that on any of these other inferiors. It actually has a little base in it and I think it sounds superior to all of them. I want to emphasize this that nothing you buy in this category can sound like or replace a larger surround system…not sure that anyone in here would think that anyways but I am amazed when people buy these little speakers and then say "It sounds nothing like my Denon surround sound system", well no #### Sherlock.

Try the TDK A33, be happy to try and answer any questions. It has a weight and feel to it as well that trumps most of the others in here. We picked it up at BB for $125, couldn't beat it for the money.

Jawbone and Dr Dre are market driven meaning they spend a lot on advertising vs TDK, JBL, UE…Powers mentioned JBL, that would have been 3rd on my list.

Jawbone and Dre were near the bottom when we tested them out and then you add in the prices and the choice was easy.

Had a JBL sound ring a long time ago that i liked very much. I have had a Jambox for a couple of years now and love it. I don't use it all the time, but very happy with it when I do. I also bought it for far less than retail.

Amazon: retail is $150 - $250

- Jawbone mini = $112 for a different color

- Jawbone big = $210 for white

Seems like those are good deals.

Have you even listened to any of them or looked at the ones that others are suggesting? Why so locked into those?
Not locked in at all. Just window shopping at home. Was at the store earlier today and didn't see the Bose or others.
Oh OK, well I would strongly recommend a trip to the always hellhole known as Best Buy just to hold them and listen to them. I think the TDK will instantly make an impression, just the weight compared to a lot of these others and you feel the difference. It's not flashy so if colors or style is a big buying decision here then perhaps one of the others is better but you're gonna spend X amount of dollars. The TDK would be competing against the bigger Jawbone.

My .02…OK .03

Buddy has the Dre pill. It sucks. Sounds tinny, no range at all.
Agree, worst of them all. Jambox is not wretched but the big one vs the TDK33, no comparison IMO. Again, not gonna say Jamboxes are horrible, just feel they are more expensive and u r paying for the name IMO.

Have had this for about a year, sound quality is great and plenty loud for one small room. I mainly just use it as a bedroom/bathroom/patio speaker. Great for traveling too. If you are looking to blast tunes in a large room or outdoors then you probably want something bigger.

I have a Beats Pill. It's not that good. The Bose Soundlink Mini is much better.
Different animal but I have the Beats standard in my HTC One from a couple years ago now, I never used it much until recently when I downloaded an app for a streaming music site I enjoy. I bought a pair of skull candies(I hate the name) and I have been open to a whole new world of traveling music everywhere I go and now use the phone whenever I am on a walk/run. The sound is great and that's what was disappointing about the Pill.

Yeah on the HTC One, Beats Audio replaces the standard Android EQ settings and it's enabled when headphones are plugged in. I agree the sound is great on the HTC One, although the actual hardware/speakers are not Beats. But the sound from the Pill is not great, even though the form factor and design is excellent. I only use the Pill now with my laptop to replace the even crappier stock speakers when watching Netflix.

I bought the Jambox (little one) then a few months later got a JBL Flip.

The JBL Flip is 50x better than the Jambox in regards to sound quality and gets much louder if needed. The Jambox has been shelved ever since.

I bought my Jambox (regular size, which wasn't a poll option), from Woot.com on an open-box sale for $70 last fall. It was new, just in damaged packaging. I previously had an Altec Lansing docking station, but had just gotten a new iPhone that wouldn't dock well with it.

Jambox is awesome. I love mine. Battery life is really good, connects fast. The build quality is rock solid. It feels substantial, and I don't worry about breaking it. I've found that the sound is very dependent on the environment. If you listen to it, a good bit of sound comes out of the back of the unit. If you put it in a corner or against a wall, it sounds MUCH better. In the middle of a room, it can sound a bit tinny and not deep enough.

Bose mini
Winner...

I'm not usually a Bose guy because they usually fail the Bang for Buck test. Not here. I'd put the Bose Mini (be sure it's the mini) against any other speakers in the market. Plenty of volume. CLEAN sound. Astonishing amount of low end coming from a speaker no bigger than a stick of butter. Fantastic construction/fit&finish (case a solid milled piece of aluminum, and speaker grille is metal. VERY durable. GF got me one for Christmas and I've been blown away. Have taken it everywhere since. It kills my buddy's Jawbone.. not even close on sound.

It's relatively new so be wary of "best Bluetooth Speaker" reviews from 6 months or more ago.... this is a fast advancing segment. What was great 6 months or a year ago is out of date now. Do NOT confuse this with the Bose Soundlink... it's much bigger and, surprisingly, worse sounding cousin.

This thing will actually fit in a jacket pocket easily. I got 14 hours of battery life using in the office at low levels with bluetooth connection.

Don't buy one without at least going to listen to the Bose.

Test showing Bose with much better low end response (60hz)

Only reason I'd go with the UE Boom is if the speaker would be getting wet regularly.

you'll enjoy it - while I wouldn't recommend it for a party, it's really awesome for personal use or for a small gathering... great battery life, nice sound - connects via bluetooth or via the headphone jack (which saves battery).

Also I love your avatar - that might still be my favorite video game

Thats the one I have. Great deal. Its about an inch smaller than my donk.
Your donk big or small?

I have a Jawbone Jambox that I got as a Christmas gift, and I've been really happy with it. I haven't compared it to anything else directly, but I've been really happy with it and it works fine for what I use it for.

I bought one of these for my son at Christmas. He uses it every day. Sounds great, is durable, and loud. Very happy with it.

I got a Pill for Christmas and was really happy with it too before coming in here an learning it sucks. :(

how are you guys using these speakers?

When I am at home, i hook my smartphone or tablet into my home stereo system, and it have that system routed outside if i want music for the deck.

With my portable speaker, I use it when I am in the bathroom getting ready (no speakers in the bathroom), on vacation (wife and I listening to music while sitting on the beach or in our hotel room).

That's why i picked up the cheaper one that I did for maximum portability, flexibility (plugs into headphone jack or can use bluetooth), and generally only 2-4 people are listening so i don't need ridiculous volume..

I'm trying to figure out why someone would drop $180-200 on something like this... is it in lieu of a home stereo?

For me, yes. We're not audionerds, and so we don't need super high fidelity, and we also don't listen to music a ton while at home. Sometimes during dinner, or while sitting in front of the fireplace, or usually when company comes over (inside or out), but otherwise we're more a TV/internet family than a music listening family. Big Jambox fits the bill for us perfectly, is portable, sounds good enough, and doesn't take up much space when not in use.

I actually bought one of these in the summer because of Dentist's recommendation. I love it as well. So portable and a surprisingly good sound for something about the size of a hockey puck.

I also have a sub-$50 bluetooth speaker, the Oontz angle, and I used to have the same opinion. However, recently I went over to a buddy's house and he had gotten the big Jambox as a Christmas present. I was pretty amazed at how loud it got and it sounded great. For his purposes, it essentially is a like a home stereo for his workshop.

So, yeah, I think as a stereo replacement or if you are really an audiophile are the main uses where the cost is justified. I did try to use my cheap one for a party on the deck once, and the volume just didn't cut it, so I'm coming around on why people are spending so much on these things. For my purposes though, the cheaper speaker is also probably best for me.

glad you love it. I wouldn't try to entertain at a party with it, but I guess it's just different devices for different folks. if you didn't have a home stereo or wanted it for a tailgate party or something, I could see where the nicer one would be much much better.

out of curiosity, what type of battery life are you getting out of yours? I'm finding upwards of 10 hours if not using bluetooth, and maybe about 6 with bluetooth.
