Jax LBs.. After Peterson is gone (1 Viewer)

When Peterson leaves Jax.. one of these (Smith, Ingram, Durant) is gona to be :( , the question is which one?
If I had to take a guess, I'd go with the fact that Smith replaced Peterson during his injury last season and the position didn't seem to be missing any too much with Smith in there ... just a guess though

Now.. isn't it a rumor that Smith will be the MLB and Peterson will be WLB this yr..

roto has him list in the MLB but that might be from last yr

"Jaguars signed LB Daryl Smith to a five-year, $25 million contract extension through 2012. The deal includes $10 in bonuses.

Smith will earn $15 million in the first three years of the deal, making him one of the better paid young linebackers in football. A great tackler and versatile player who replaced Mike Peterson at MLB in 2007, Smith fits the Jaguars mold. He may move back outside in 2007 but will remain a solid IDP option.

Peterson's profile in Rotoworld

"Jaguars linebacker Mike Peterson has begun doing light running drills at the team's offseason conditioning program.

Peterson, who's expected to play the weak side in 2007, is rehabbing from a torn pectorals muscle. He's been cleared medically for OTAs.

If Smith is playin MLB behind that HUGH line, he could put up monterous Solos for yrs.

2 yrs in the NFL is like 2 lightyears in space... there'll be so many changes.

but it speaks highly that JAX drafted an ILB (Durant) in the second round. Maybe Peterson might not be 100% in time for training camp. But I don't think they view Smith as plan B MLB with that high selection

Firstly, take it FWIW for now but Jags homers at the open minicamp practice are reporting that the defensive starters were:

Ingram LOLB

Peterson MLB

Smith ROLB

If nothing else, it's news that Peterson was on the field for team drills. Six other Jags were blackshirted and were participants in individual drills, if at all. Unfortunately, all the local writers want to discuss is whether Walker and Broussard can supplant Reggie Williams and Ernest Wilford. Nary a word on the fact that their stud MLB is back on the field and in the middle rather than outside. :)

Anyhow...

The current scheme is MLB friendly in the boxscore. Two big DTs in an even front, ROLB/LOLB on the outside blunting the ROLB value.

If not Mike Peterson, that would tend to favor Daryl Smith today. Many have felt from the beginning that Smith would be a better fit in the middle than outside. Smith got the call for Peterson and equaled his first 4+ game output.

The drafting of Durant definitely says something. With Daryl Smith signing a five year extension in January while Peterson is attempting to return from a pectoral injury at age 30, I think it says he's the long-term answer at WLB and a valuable hedge against Peterson. Whether it's a Barrett Ruud like three year wait or something happens sooner remains to be seen.

Still, it certainly looks like Smith has the inside track for future production.

And, finally, to stir the pot just a bit. Del Rio has a history with the 3-4 defense as a coach and a player. He's got Bobby McCray and Brent Hawkins and drafted Brian Smith this year, a guy he's raving about as a tweener type. It's a real longshot, but with the trend toward hybrids and back to the 3-4 in recent seasons...it isn't completely  to envision both Durant and Smith as ILBs in some future season when Stroud and Henderson start slipping.

The Jaguars envision rookie Justin Durant as an outside linebacker.

The No. 48 pick overall, Durant played inside linebacker at Hampton. He'll likely back up Mike Peterson on the weak side as a rookie and possibly take over the starting job when Peterson's contract expires in 2009.

I'm not finding the part about him backing up Peterson and taking his job in that article at all.
