Firstly, take it FWIW for now but Jags homers at the open minicamp practice are reporting that the defensive starters were:
Ingram LOLB
Peterson MLB
Smith ROLB
If nothing else, it's news that Peterson was on the field for team drills. Six other Jags were blackshirted and were participants in individual drills, if at all. Unfortunately, all the local writers want to discuss is whether Walker and Broussard can supplant Reggie Williams and Ernest Wilford. Nary a word on the fact that their stud MLB is back on the field and in the middle rather than outside.
Anyhow...
The current scheme is MLB friendly in the boxscore. Two big DTs in an even front, ROLB/LOLB on the outside blunting the ROLB value.
If not Mike Peterson, that would tend to favor Daryl Smith today. Many have felt from the beginning that Smith would be a better fit in the middle than outside. Smith got the call for Peterson and equaled his first 4+ game output.
The drafting of Durant definitely says something. With Daryl Smith signing a five year extension in January while Peterson is attempting to return from a pectoral injury at age 30, I think it says he's the long-term answer at WLB and a valuable hedge against Peterson. Whether it's a Barrett Ruud like three year wait or something happens sooner remains to be seen.
Still, it certainly looks like Smith has the inside track for future production.
And, finally, to stir the pot just a bit. Del Rio has a history with the 3-4 defense as a coach and a player. He's got Bobby McCray and Brent Hawkins and drafted Brian Smith this year, a guy he's raving about as a tweener type. It's a real longshot, but with the trend toward hybrids and back to the 3-4 in recent seasons...it isn't completely

to envision both Durant and Smith as ILBs in some future season when Stroud and Henderson start slipping.
