Jax WR situation? (1 Viewer)

So, there was a lot of the Mike Walker talk early on and then he suffered the ankle injury recently. I haven't heard much about that injury since then and haven't been able to find much. More importantly, I haven't really seen anything discussing who would be taking his place if he is out. Anyone have any thoughts or info on this? We're only 2 weeks away from the season. Is Walker going to be healthy to start the season?

Right now Troy Williamson is the WR2 and Mike Sims-Walker is hurt. I doubt either situation changes much before the start of the season. I know Mike Sims-Walker has been a popular sleeper with a lot of fantasy people this season, but expectation in Jacksonville are not as lofty. He has a great deal of talent when healthy, but that has been a huge issue. Del Rio has been quoted as saying, The best ability a player can have is AVAIL-ability. There's at least a small chance that Sims-Walker doesn't make the Jags roster this year, much less start the season as WR2. If Sims-Walker is out of the picture because of injury or being released, Williamson would start as WR2 and beyond that is anyone's guess. There's a mess of young unproven guys that have all shown skills at times but none of which have done anything to distance themselves from the rest. Once again, the Jags WR corp is a mess.

While pre-season games can be misleading, I think Troy Williamson has earned the WR2 spot until he proves he can't keep this type of production going in the regular season. Walker's (again) untimely injuries are going to cost him playing time and maybe a 2010 backseat role if Williamson continues to shine.

That won't take long.

Why do you keep calling him Sims-Walker?

He actually petitioned the NFL(or announced that he planned to at least) for the name change late last year after the death of his father. If I'm recalling correctly Sims-Walker was actually how his name appeared on his birth certificate he just didn't go by it until recently. But now it's official.

I gave up on Williamson 2 years ago....but this pre-season he has shown his high first round pedigree. I know it is only pre-season...and I am not a huge proponet of going on those results. However he has looked like a completly different player. Running crisp routes, showing good hands, and you can't teach what he has and that is grease lightning speed.

The Jaguars may have landed a kid who finally get's it. Sometimes (actually al ot of times) WR's are late bloomers and the Jags all time best WR was one of those cases (Jimmy Smith anyone?). Look at Antonio Bryant's ressurection last year. Troy Williamson has just a good a shot as those 2 guys to emerge as legit NFL starting WR. When your taken #7 overall you must have had something that caught the scouts eye's. Williamson is getting a second chance and making the most of it. I think we have a major sleeper on our hands here.

I thought you were all over Torry Holt as being a great value? You don't think Jacksonville can support 2 relevant fantasy WRs do ya? They haven't done that since Jimmy and Keenan.

As ridiculous as this sounds, Williamson might be the only draftable WR on this team....unless you're in a terribly deep draft where Torry Holt's 750 yards might actually mean something.

Yeah.... I think I'm just gonna continue to call him Mike Walker.

Has Williamson looked good on the practice field through camp and OTA's or has his on filed "production" been a surprise? Can't say that I remember seeing a lot about him on the CBS Sportsline Rapid Report updates.

if he was awful at camp, do you think he would have played with the 1st team?

He looked good at camp, opinions ranged from "not bad at all" to "excellent". But I think some Vikes fans will tell you that he's looked good at camp before. As a Jags fan the best way to describe my current opinion on Williamson is "encouraged but not excited". I think there's a pretty rigid ceiling on his potential in that he might be able to produce against single coverage but if he starts hot I have almost zero confidence in his ability to produce if the defense is giving him a lot of attention.

Williamson always seemed to disappoint. I hope he has turned the corner, but as a Vikes fan, its hard to say. Have faith in him until you have a game where everything is "jiving" and on 2nd and 1, Garrard throws a surprise Deep Ball, and Williamson drops it. then the game falls apart. But until then, have optimism

What I do know is their options have been limited by injuries and inconsistencies to almost every receiver on the team. So yes, he would see time out of necessity.I was looking to see if anyone had first hand knowledge by attending a training camp. Can't always trust the coach-speak.

that is why I look at their actions. The Jags traded away Northcutt, they must have some confidence in Williamson

Del Rio on Williamson:

"I think you see it all the time in the NFL. For whatever reasons, there'll be situations or a set of circumstances that happen to fit a player better. There are players like that that maybe don't burst upon the scene their first year in the league, but maybe after bouncing from a team or two, they end up finding a home and end up flourishing. So, obviously, we welcome that. I think he's had a great camp,'' Del Rio said.
http://www.jacksonville.com/sports/footbal...ving_his_careerGarrard on Williamson:

“A guy like Troy is special. We’ve got the weapons. It’s just me putting the ball in their hands”

I looked at the trade of Northcutt as the Jags saying that they wanted their draft picks to make the team. Aside from Holt, I don't think I'd draft any of the Jags WR.Sims-Walker can't stay healthy. I like the comparison on the board last week to Tyrone Calico.I think Williamson will be a tease. Look good now, drop the ball when it counts. Mike Thomas has been battling injuries all camp.Jarrett Dillard was supposed to be the possession receiver but it's tough to possess if you keep dropping the ball in practice.Unheralded Nate Hughes has had a great camp. Tiquan Underwood had very good OTAs but disappointing camp.Personally, I'd wait until the regular season to see which one of the rookies gets time when Sims-Walker and Williamson don't come through.

any chance that they resign matt jones if things don't improve?
Almost none. I've been told by people very close to that situation that Del Rio actually wanted to keep Matt Jones and it was Gene Smith making a point about his new priorities of character and leadership that made the call that Matt Jones was done. I haven't seen any softening of that position from Gene Smith so I doubt his mind has been changed. On a related note, the guys Smith has brought in have pretty amazing records of behavior and leadership. For example(from Jaguars.com):All of our 9 drafted rookies were at some point during their college careers voted captains of their teams. Some for 3 years.ALL of the drafted rookies have graduated college and Jarret Dillard is in graduate school. Clean Gene is serious. I doubt he's going to undercut himself by resigning Matt.

None.
I think the Jags got a steal in the trade for Williamson. Concentration and not ability is what has hampered Troy's role as a viable receiver in the NFL. I think the Vikings were a bad fit and lacked in my opinion the coaching to help Williams production. I think you can do worse than picking Troy up in the late rounds of your draft. You may get nothing, but I think folks will be drafting him as a top 20 WR next year.

Keep in mind that what is being said of Williamson this year is what was being said of A.Bryant last year at this same time. I added Bryant as a pre-season free agent after he went unpurchased in our auction. He paid dividends for me big time and I looked shrewd for adding him before the season. Truth is, I just watched the blurbs and took a lucky flier on him - no real insight other than the old "talent + opportunity" mantra. If the light has come on, Williamson finally lives up to the hype for this season. Then next preseason we can all debate about whether or not it was a one-year fluke or not...and we'll use A.Bryant's production (or lack thereof) as evidence.

Today's Ask Vic from the Jags website:

Curt from JacksonvilleHow many wide receivers do you think the Jags will keep this year and who do you think will make the final cut?Vic: My guess is they’ll keep either five or six, and I think that’ll depend on how many tight ends they keep because a couple of those tight ends, Zach Miller and Ernest Wilford, are more wide receiver than tight end. I’ll say the Jags keep five wide receivers. Torry Holt, Troy Williamson and Nate Hughes appear to be locks, which means everybody else is competing for two spots. That’s just my opinion.
Two things -1) He didn't think of Mike Walker as a lock.2) He did consider Nate Hughes as a lock.Hughes (#16) is a deep, deep sleeper to keep an eye on tonight when Jags-Eagles is NFLN tape delay.

Mmmmm. Dilliard and Thomas....what happened?

I've been saying for a while that Mike Sims-Walker was not a lock for the squad. But the Hughes thing surprises me a somewhat. He's looked very good at times but I certainly didn't consider him a lock at this point.

Thomas has been dinged a little and Dillard has had a bad camp with drops.I don’t think there’s any way they cut Mike Thomas. So that would mean Jarrett Dillard and Walker are fighting for a spot and Tiquan Underwood is heading to the practice squad.

i figured the same thing and spent 20 bucks in blind bidding cash to get Troy this year...last year I picked up Bryant almost immediately after our draft and he made up for drafting Roy Williams in the 4th of a dynasty start-up.
