Jay Cutler vs. Jason Elam (1 Viewer)

Jay Cutler's first start raises lots of questions. Probably the biggest and most exciting question is if/how will it impact Jason Elam's production?

FWIW, here are the numbers for several other kickers when a rookie QB started for the first time:

Rackers scored 8 points in Leinart's first start. He had been averaging 5.0 ppg prior to that.

Bironas scored 6 points in Young's first start. He had been averaging 1.7 ppg prior to that.

Bryant scored 3 points in Gradkowski's first start. He had been averaging 3.0 ppg prior to that.

Elam is currently averaging 6.3 ppg.

it would be an interesting study for you in the off-season. the correlation between K production and QB quality/age.

This is an interesting question for Elam owners. I have been thinking of dumping him for several weeks now but haven't pulled the trigger yet (no top options avialable, but as in most leagues several decent kickers). Cutler starting has me concerned about the unkown.

One unknown for Cutler is how he will be in the redzone. While Denver is 25th in red zone chances, they are pretty good when they get there. They are 3rd in converting those redzone trips to TDs and 2nd in combined TD/FG conversions (somewhat due to Elam being money when he actually gets a chance). Will the redzone trips go up or down and will they be as effecient when they get there?

Right now I'm leaning on keeping Elam for the week. I'm thinking the overall offense shouldn't get much worse, but maybe being a little more conservative in the redzone with a rookie QB will lead to a slight increase in FG chances. Who really knows though,

Any thoughts?

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Good post and good info--just struck me as funny that *Jason Elam's production* is the biggest and most exciting question surrounding Cutler's first start. :)

Two more from 2005:

Dawson scored 2 points in Frye's first start. He had been averaging 6.6 ppg prior to that.

Nedney scored 3 points in Smith's first start. He had been averaging 4.0 ppg prior to that.

This miniscule sample size is hardly telling. Kicker production is so random as is, I doubt you'll find any sort of meaningful correlation here, even with a much larger sample size.

The only league I have Elam in is a dynasty, where I'd consider him among the upper echelon, definetly not dropping him. May bench him for Nugent though.

UPDATE (FWIW):

Elam averaged 6.3 ppg while Plummer was starting this year.

He has averaged 9.7 ppg in Cutler's three starts.
