FWIW jeff Garcia will sign early next week with the raiders. I don't have a link but trust me on my inside source here; it's VERY reliable.

can't hurt.
Agreed, I actually think this will help the Raiders move forward. Garcia is an experienced QB with fuel left in the tank and can mentor Russell. This may be all Russell needs to mature into a good starting NFL QB.

If this is true, I like it. Garcia comes in with tons of experience and could be a great mentor plus he fills a backup role that the Raiders were worried about.

Thank you, Red, for sharing. Garcia would help mentor Russell and possibly start, imo.
Yes, he should start
If he is signed ther is no way does he start. Absolutely no way unless there is an injury.
I agree, no way do they start Jeff Garcia, Russell started looking good at the end of the season last year in only his first year starting. I personally was impressed with what Russell did the last three games of the season considering the WR talent he had to work with. IMO the Raiders would be making a huge mistake starting Garcia over Russell. Garcia will be a backup only.

Good point and OAK was playing decent teams in NE, HOU and TB. His rushing yards disappeared. What do you think changed to cause this? Did the pass d get better or what?

seriously doubt it. garcia wants to play, his window is closing, someone who needs a starter will sign him. & whytf would he want to play back up in oakland?

makes no sense.

I would love it if he signed, but I agree, I don't see how its possible. He doesn't want to go somewhere as a backup, and if he comes to Oakland, that is exactly what he'll be. And a darn good one at that. I think that if he doesn't sign somewhere before the draft, he hangs around until someone suffers an injury in training camp. Just my

I guess this is what I was thinking as well. Has Garcia ever been a good "mentor" for anyone? More likely he comes in and undermines the young QB's because he thinks he should be the one starting.

I wonder if this move is a reaction to the Cutler trade?

I'm sure they feel like they have a better chance to compete now and this would prevent Denver from signing Garcia (which I assume they didn't want to do anyway, otherwise they already would've)

That sounds more like the Al Davis we know. You remember Lamont Jordan?

uuuhhh....we needed a rb at the time. we don't need a qb. :debatable:

Not referring to the signing of Jordan. I'm talking about the keeping of him when we didn't need him and he cost a lot.

The Garcia to Oakland rumor is on Pro Football Talk and NBC Bay Area sports is also reporting the story as well.

Garcia rumored to Oakland

Exclusive: Jeff Garcia Negotiating With Raiders

By NBC Bay Area Sports

Jeff Garcia in Silver and Black?

Yes.

NBC Bay Area has confirmed Garcia is negotiating a deal with the Oakland Raiders. The contract could be finalized as early as Sunday.

A source close to the negotiations tells NBC Bay Area Sports Director Raj Mathai a deal is "close. It will probably get done."

The 39 year-old quarterback will have the opportunity to compete for the starting position with JaMarcus Russell, though Garcia will likely serve as a backup.

This will be a homecoming for Garcia, who grew up in Gilroy and graduated from San Jose State University. Garcia was also a 3-time Pro Bowler with the 49ers earlier this decade. He spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

:bs: Not a chance.

Russell is the bonus baby, the future, and he's making great strides. You don't hand the keys to a 50 year-old journeyman.

If Garcia is willing to accept a backup role, I actually love the move. A guy with a work ethic like JG has can have a positive effect on a young, sometimes lazy guy like Russell. We can only hope some of that rubs off. He's a perfect "mentor" if both parties are willing.

does that sound anything like garcia? dude has made his career being 'scrappy' no way he's content holding a clipboard.

When did "common sense" start becoming predictors of Al Davis' behavior?
it doesn't make sense for garcia.
I do not see how this does not make sense for the Raiders. The question is does it make sense for Garcia.
this guy gets it.

He's not 25 years old anymore. HIS contentness is of nobody's concern.Holding a clipboard for an NFL salary >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> unemployment.

he won't be unemployed for long. the other side of the bay is a way more likely place for him to end up. as well as det, minn, sea or nyj

Looks like a deal is almost done, at least according to the following blurb:

Raiders | Garcia close to signing?

NBC Bay Area Sports reports the Oakland Raiders are negotiating a contract with free-agent QB Jeff Garcia (Buccaneers). A source close to the negotiations said a deal is "close. It will probably get done."

I like the signing, should it happen. This is exactly what Russell needs.

I laugh at the idea that people think they know what's better for Garcia. Maybe he doesn't want to move to some other city to start for part of the season and only be there for 1 or 2 years, tops. Maybe he wants to take a mentoring role with a young QB in the Bay area - where he lived for the early part of his NFL career?

Maybe he is just found that he is very content in life with his hot wife and likes the idea of collecting a paycheck as kind of a player/coach. I know I would be. Like I said before, this makes perfect sense for the Raiders. The only real question really was is Garcia willing and ready to pretty much call it a career and sit on the sidelines rather than look to start somewhere.

Maybe Garcia just wants to move back to the Bay Area and make a few million on the side. He grew up and spent most of his career there.

Kudos to you and your source.

if garcia is down with being a back up, then i like it. i just don't see it, unless he decided to hang it up & collect a paycheck for the 2-3 years.

Garcia signing official

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer

Monday, April 6th, 2009 at 12:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are confirming the signing of free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia.

Garcia, 39, considered signing with the Raiders two years ago after a visit to Alameda, only to instead sign with Tampa Bay in part because he wanted a chance to start and realized Oakland’s first pick was likely to be quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

More to come later . . .

nice job, red.
