Jeff Samardzija in MLB? (1 Viewer)

Has anyone heard the news that Jeff Samardzija signed a 7 yr deal with the Chicago Cubs?????? As a ND fan and a more NFL fan than MLB, this upsets me. Does anyone know how this is going to pan out? Can he play football for the Irish this year? Will there be a stipulation in his MLB contract that he cant play football?? Will the NCAA allow it?

Thoughts??????

from Rotoworld:

Cubs signed RHP Jeff Samardzija, their fifth-round pick in the 2006 draft.ESPN is reporting that the deal is worth $7.25 million over five years. Samardzija will report to Rookie Boise later this month and then play wide receiver for Notre Dame this fall. He'll only get all of the cash if he decides to give up football and concentrate on baseball next year. As a potential first-round pick in the NFL draft, he may lean the other way.
so he gets a year to decide

Yep, he'll most likely do the football route being a projected 1st rounder, but has a nice backup plan in place just in case.

i wish i had those options, mengya!!! ND's offense would drop dramatically if he couldnt play this year. They have R McKnight coming off a knee injury to replace Stovall, but no one proven after he and Samardzija

why do u think he will be a 1st rd mistake?? he has great hands, good speed for his size...he plays like easy Ed McAffrey!! (not that im comparing the two)

I think it is way too early to be talking who will be a first rounder next year, with few exceptions. As we learned from this year, there seems to be 30 offensive skilled position players that "should" go in the first round. Some slip to the second day of the draft. Way too early to talk with any certainty at all. This is even before we talk about injuries.

I agree.. he is not a 1st round pick.

1. Because there are some really good receivers available this year. Much better than him.

2. He is limited in his routes. Don't be fooled by the numbers he put up against terrible terrible defenses. Against top notch competition (ie the bowl game) he pretty much got shut out. I think he will make a good #2 WR in the NFL after a couple years under his belt. He reminds me of Michael Jenkins at Atlanta. (Of course he went in the 1st round) but probably should have been an early to mid- second round.

2. Hands are important and he has the best hands of the group, plus he has got size and decent speed ( Jenkins is nt as bad as everyone thinks )

Atlanta has nt got a QB , that does nt help Jenkins.

I'd say Dwayne Jarret and Calvin Johnson are better than Samardza and Ted Ginn Jr is on the same level as far as being pro prospects. A lot can and will change this year, as there are plenty of talented juniors who are just getting a chance to play this year.

FWIW I met him at the game on Fri. nice guy!! but since the Cubs drafted him Id go to the NFL, although I would like to see him in Cubs uni as I am a Cubs fan.

I'm confused  Jeremy Bloom couldn't play football cuz he tried to raise money to go to the olympics but this kid can sign a 7+ million dollar contract and still play? could somebody explain it to me like I've never heard of the NCAA and their asinine rules before?

Oh yeah and Drew Tate made a hole in one in a charity event and couldn't accept the car they were giving away?

The NCAA blocks endorsement deals, which is what Bloom had. It allows players to play professionally in one sport while competing as an "amateur" in the other.

Signing a contract =/= getting money.

Oh he's getting money. To get the full 7.25, he needs to quit football. He's already playing class A ball, which you don't do for free. :P Which has no effect on his eligibility.
ELIGIBILITY CLARIFICATIONS - Notre Dame two-sport standout Jeff Samardzija could elect to sign with the major-league organization that drafts him and then could play a short season of minor-league baseball this season before reporting for Notre Dame preseason football camp in early August (he would maintain his college football eligibility despite becoming a pro baseball player) ... his classmate Jeff Manship actually has two years of college baseball eligibility remaining (for the 2007 and '08 seasons), because he did not play as a freshman in 2004 (due to injury).

Interesting. Did not know and would never have guessed that.

So what do u guys think?? Would you choose baseball or football??? I would definately play football, its much more fun to play. Not just because I'm a ND fan since I was a pup, but I think this kid has alot of intangibles at WR. Granted, I havent seen him pitch much b/c i dont watch all that much college baseball, but he must be a damn good pitcher to get selected #15 overall.

Ricky Williams played minor league ball for the Phillies while he was at U of Texas in the 90s. (*** insert obligatory drug joke here ***)

He was taken in the 5th round.

I didn't look up but I think he meant the 15th pitcher.

He might have meant that, but I count around 53 pitchers taken through 3 rounds.

It was just a guess.

He would have been a 1st round pick, but tems are worried he'll go to the NFL.When you can throw it 99 miles an hour, you'll get drafted regardless.

An average (5 era, 6-6 record reliever) will get 4 mil a year. Rudi Johnson makes what, 2 mil? Clemens at 43 is making 22 mil. No one in the NFL over 33 is making 1/2 that. Pitching in MLB is like stealing money. And your head doesn't get beat in.

Not sure why you chose a RB for your comparison to Jeff Samardzija, the WR, but, Rudi signed a deal last year giving him $12 mil in guaranteed money, and $16 over the first 3 years. 5 years, $26 mil total + $12m in bonus.I agree pitching in the MLB is like stealing money...if you are good at it. Also alot easier to get injured and not be able to return from it, and alot harder to get into an MLB rotation, than it is to get on the field as an NFL WR.

Rudi could also be cut tomorrow and not see half that. The top WRs/RBs in the NFL can't touch the top SPs in MLB. We're talking 18-22mil vs 5-6mil? Guaranteed vs non-gauranteed? An AVERAGE relief pitcher makes 2-3-4 MIL.Financially, the NFL is no where close to MLB. Jeff throws 99 mph. He'll have a job for the next 14 years in the majors. If you look at injuries, length of NFL careers, guaranteed contracts, MLB is like stealing money.

No salary cap sorta helps.

It's pretty close, those guys barely get paid
