Jeopardy Baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh (4 Viewers)

I do think that "Pair" in the clue made it easier to get sidetracked.

And if the category was "Rock Legends", that might have helped a little.

Usually by now, I am very tired of almost any champ that has won this many games.

But Amy is so low key and likable, I still find myself rooting for her in every game.

I believe 12-31 was Amy’s best Coryat, and it was 44th on the all-time list. Matt Amodio has 3 of the 5 best Coryat scores of all time, which is bonkers.

Still, I like to enjoy each champion. Irrespective of whether they’re potentially in the GoAT discussion or not, a megachamp (10+ games) is an incredible achievement. Amy is a very charming person and I hope she keeps it rolling.

Wow, I don’t remember Brad Rutter’s original run, but it’s interesting that he doesn’t even make the top 20 during regular play.
Under the old rules, multi-day Champions we’re capped at 5 Games. Also,  believe (not certain) he played when the board values were one half of what that are today.

Original run - $55K + two Camaro’s in 2000. In the 2001 ToC he won another $100K. After that he appeared in 4 or 5 Champions tournaments. Battle of the Decades, Champions versus IBM Watson, Team Event, Greatest of All Time…maybe 1-2 more I’m forgetting.

From his Wiki page:

Until the Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time Tournament in 2020, Rutter had never lost a Jeopardy! match against a human opponent (though he twice trailed at the end of the first game of a two-day tournament match before coming back to win). This streak consisted of his original 5-day run in 2000 (after which he retired undefeated) as well as 17 matches in five tournaments (including one as part of a team)—all of which he won. Rutter finished third in the match—both his first defeat overall and the first time he finished behind a human opponent.

Yep, one of the great mysteries of Jeopardy is how many games would Rutter have won if he had played after the "champions retire after 5 wins" rule was abolished. Same for Chuck Forrest, who IMO was the best player of the '80s.

The guy who finished second last night was pretty happy when he showed up for the taping and saw Matt Amodio was no longer the champ. Posted on reddit r/jeopardy!

Mike Parks - 2022 Jan 05

The contestants for this week all got to the studio and went through the opening rules and regs talk, then we all go into the studio for practice games. The first one has Amy in the first podium, I'm watching in the studio audience waiting for my turn. We don't know that she's the returning champion or anything yet. They play the full-on real show intro and record real contestant introductions, and we for the first time hear Johnny's voice say 'AND OUR RETURNING CHAMPION, AMY SCHNEIDER WITH A 23-DAY CASH WINNINGS OF $LIKE A ZILLION DOLLARS'.

We thought they were playing a prank or something on the newbie contestants. Then no one from the crew said anything about it. A tense silence came over the audience. There were whispers, 'Was that real? Is that her real total?' Then I saw her buzzer speed first-hand and it all made sense. We had a super-champ on our hands.

Another interesting tidbit: he couldn't catch Amy (her 22nd runaway out of 26 games), so he bet $20 on FJ to preserve 2nd. But he originally bet $420 - turns out that's not allowed.

Other banned wager numbers: 69, 88, 14, 1488, and 666. Apparently those middle numbers have ties to hate speech / white supremacy. Who knew?

I wonder if there are any others. E.g. 911

Reigning Jeopardy! champion Amy Schneider was robbed at gunpoint over New Year's weekend in Oakland, Calif.

Schneider tweeted about the robbery to her 52,000 followers, saying she was shaken up but otherwise OK.

"Hi all! So first off: I'm fine. But I got robbed yesterday, lost my ID, credit cards and phone. I then couldn't really sleep last night, and have been dragging myself around all day trying to replace everything," the Oakland resident said in her post.

@jeoardamy is a good follow. She took a break this week after she was robbed (replacing all her IDs, credit cards, et al.) But in normal weeks she posts game summaries, what her thought process was, questions she missed. She’s engaging and answers a lot of Qs while doing it.

This is an extremely short list. Especially questions missed on FJ.

People are going to focus more on the $1 million hurdle, but I think the bigger deal was a day or two before, getting through that game with two good challengers who were both decent on the buzzer. That's the kind of game that finally brought Amodio down.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not really a fan of how Jennings has been framing the beginning of games lately. Usually the host will pump up the challengers a bit, noting anything can happen and they still have a chance to win. He seems to be focusing more on Amy still having a chance to lose.

That's exactly we were taking about after the Jeopardy round. I believe Amy was at 5400, guy on the right (Geoff) had 5600, and the lady in the middle (Terri) had 4200.

Then she absolutely smoked everyone in Double Jeopardy and found both DDs. Was amazing how fast she went up 10K+. Wasn’t a runaway but only $2K short. If Geoff had found DD3 and doubled up, he would have been the leader going into FJ. Definitely her biggest nail biter.

She is an absolute powerhouse. Going to take an exceptional game or two strong players who are good in the buzzer to take her down.

It’s probably a “game recognizes game” thing. I wonder if Amy and Matt will join the rotation in The Chase at some point.

Amy is just deadly on the buzzer...reminds me a lot of watching Holzhauer when he was on his streak, there's large blocks of time where it's just him and the host going back and forth, answer and question, and the other two opponents don't get a word in for 6-8 clues at a time

But she's been really faltering on the Final Jeopardy questions.

Lately, I have answered more of the finals correctly than her and I'm no Amy (not even close).

I wonder if being on so many episodes in a row, even though they take breaks between filming results in some kind of mind fatigue?

Amy is a machine.

Feel like I've seen her lose a bunch of FJ questions lately, and a lot of money...but she's so dominant on the buzzer- and with a crazy broad based encyclopedic memory, it's always a runaway.

I haven’t been following closely.  Where does she rank in wins and money?
She passed Matt Amodio - whose 38 game streak just ended October 11, 2021 - last night

  • consecutive wins- 39 (2nd all-time)
  • prize money - $1,319,800 (4th all-time in regular play behind Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer, and Amodio)
  • she’ll be the #1 seed at the next Tournament of Champions.
  • Matt, incredibly enough, will be the #2 seed
  • #3 seed will be Jonathan Fisher, who took Amodio down. He won 11 games and $246.1K; it was the first time someone beat a superchamp (10+ games) and then became a superchamp
  • #7 seed Andrew He was another strong champion, winning $157K in 5 games thanks to excellent lay and super aggressive DD wagering. He lost to...current superchamp Amu Schneider.

alright let's nerd it up

I do not like long running champions. This is the second since guest hosting started. Hopefully Amy is the last one for a while.

I am done watching until there is a new champion.

Why?  I literally don’t care about the contestant and just want to gauge how much I know and enjoy learning.  I could see if you said you specifically don’t like Amy but even then it seems weird to me, they are just answering questions.  I don’t even listen to the banter after the commercial break, skip right past it.

I’d watch Jeopardy without contestants.  Just somebody reading the questions and then wait the same amount of time they do if no one buzzes in and just have the host give the answers.  Would be almost as entertaining as it is now, for me.

I will say - Amy is damn impressive.

I am not sure why. I quit watching about 10 games into Matt's run as well.

I do tend to root for underdogs, for example Bengals for the superbowl this year.

I'm curious about that too. I prefer it- gives me a familiar face and a known quality to gauge myself and the contenders to rather than just a bunch of randoms. It's like getting to see Michael Jordan play every game... instead of a bunch of people at a pickup court.

I personally like champions - Amy has been fun to watch.  She needs to runaway with it though as her struggles on FJ will likely do her in at some point.

I usually agree with you.

It gets boring when the Final question becomes meaningless most of the time. There is always some suspense with the Final if it isn't a runaway.

And many of the champs get annoying at some point.

But I find Amy completely likable (and not greedy or overconfident) and I haven't got tired of her at all.

A anticlimactic FJ is what bugs me the most. Even if it's a runaway, if the 2nd and 3rd place finishers got to keep there totals instead of just getting $1k & $2k it could make it more interesting just because the wagers could be more meaningful.
