2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Philadelphia Eagles

Player Page Link: Jeremy Maclin Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I liked what I saw out of Maclin last year and think he will have another strong campaign in 2011.

Recs: 75

Rec Yds: 1035

Rec TDs: 8

Has the most targets, receptions, and touchdowns of the wide receivers on the Eagles, yet has a lower ADP than Desean Jackson. He became more reliable as an over middle receiver as the season progressed.

He received the same # of targets in the second half of the season while Desean's targets went down. I expect Maclin to continue to improve and catch a few more touchdowns as teams gameplan more for Desean's big play ability.

80 receptions, 1100 yards, 11 tds

Finished WR14 last year, current ADP is 17. I think he's worth that slot, but I'd probably take him over Colston and Dez Bryant.

In Jacksons defense, he did play 2.5 less games than Maclin and they had the same amount of ff points.

Jeremy Maclin equals value, that's what you need to remember when you enter your drafts this upcoming season. He finished in the top 15 at WR in overall fantasy points according to FBG scoring yet he lives under the radar with D. Jackson getting most of the headlines in Philly. Maclin is only entering his 3rd year so he is eligible to improve even more than he has this past year, I think he's an important part of not only Philly's big play offense but will be an important part of good fantasy football teams this upcoming season. He makes for an excellent WR2 but can be drafted a little later than your average solid WR2 due to not having the big name.

71 receptions for 955 yards and 9 Td's

It's worthy to note that if Mike Vick gets hurt and Kolb isn't in town, Philly Wr's will take a big hit.

that's a weird phrase.

I've liked the kid since his days at Mizzou and thought he would be the best WR from his class (looks like I might be wrong on that, but not by much). I look for continued improvement in his all around game, although I don't know if he'll break into the top 10 WR group this year. Good value for sure.

75 / 1001 / 10

I don't think he's as under the radar as you think. His ADP is WR17 right now.

It appears to me that this pair of receivers has very little upside for the coming season (though Maclin obviously has a lot more relative to his ADP) because there simply isn’t likely to be that much pie to go around, but they could either (or both) disappoint easily. Imagine what happens to their numbers if Avant, Celek or Riley Cooper has an unexpectedly large year. Celek already has a 971 yard-8 TD season under his belt while Avant could well top 800 yards a couple of times in his career.
Some of my thoughts here I like Maclin but won't reach for either Philly WR this year.

Exactly. You're paying full freight for Maclin. I think that Maclin would suffice as a WR2, but the problem is.... with Vick doing a lot of running, there likely won't be enough pie to satisfy D Jackson and Maclin, given that you have a decent pass catching TE in Celek and a great pass catching RB in McCoy. While Vick had a great year last year, I can't see Vick throwing for more than 3600 yards. One of DJax or Maclin will likely bust.....the question will be which one? Since I can't really answer that question, I will likely stay away from Maclin unless his ADP drops to WR22 or lower.70 rec, 875 yds, 7TD.

Huge Maclin fan and also feel that he can cement himself as the WR1 on Philly. He is only entering year 3 so he is still developing. He needs to work on his concentration at times, can occasionally drop a key pass. I like the offense, coach, QB, surrounding talent, and a good fan base that will keep him in line.

Maclin caught 23 more balls than DSJax and 4 more TDs.

80 receptions, 1,100 yds, and 8 TDs...Maclin is a solid WR2 for most owners.

Most FF owners love the shiny, fast players...but miss out on the real producers. Kinda like they love the HR in baseball over the OBP.

Shiny toy=Djax

Producer=Maclin

The other thing to consider is that Desean Jackson is a real threat to hold out for a new contract.

Maclin success will depend on Vick getting better grasp of offense and Vick staying healthy. Vick goes down and Kolb out the door Maclin will really loose value. Maclin will be the steady WR out of the Eagles starting duo. He is better going over the middle and bigger frame to stay away from nicks that cost Jackson games. Maclin may not have have the big season as Jackson, but should not have the dropoffs as Jackson from year to year. Maclin is a top end WR2. He plays in a pass heavy offense with him being at worst the #2 target. McCoy and Celek development will only open up routes for Maclin as teams will have to cover 4 players in every pass play.
