According to a report in The Boston Globe, Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Monday's game. However, the extent of the injury is not yet known -- one source said that Mayo was expected to be out 6 to 8 weeks, while the other source said that the timetable is "not that bad" and Mayo is expected to return sooner than that. The second-year linebacker was injured late in the first quarter on a 16-yard run by Buffalo running back Fred Jackson. After spending a few moments on the sidelines -- where it appeared the medical staff was examining his right knee -- he was helped to the locker room. He did not return, and he wasn’t in the locker room when the media was allowed in after the game. For more Patriots' updates, check out our football blog, "It Is What It Is."

Do the Pats run with what they have?? Very deep with young linebacker talent...

or does BB blow the conch shell and get Seau off his surfboard? Reports say he is willing to play 6 games (just which ones)

or does Teddy B pull a Farve and unretire?

No one really knows at this point. Others have said it wasn't as serious and the window was similar to Polamalu's 3-6 weeks. The differences is how they categorize it (Level 1, 2, 3, etc.). I also heard that each person recovers/heals from this type of injury at a different rate, so there will be a broad range of how long he'll be out.

There's a thread on this in the IDP forum.

I don't want to see Bruschi back, quite frankly. He's completely all done at this point. Seau would be a better option, but as you stated, he's already said he's only up for playing 6 games.

Personally, I'd stick with Guyton and hope he can improve with the increased playing time.

What's Ted Johnson up to?

Key Patriots LB Mayo out 6-8 weeks or more with MCL tear

Sep. 16, 2009

Special to CBSSports.com

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo has a Grade III sprained MCL and the timetable for his return remains uncertain, CBSports.com has confirmed.

The minimum amount of time he will likely miss is between 6-8 weeks, and a source close to Mayo admitted that he appears to have a long recovery ahead of him. A Grade III sprain represents a complete tear of the MCL as opposed to Grade I and Grade II, which are incomplete tears.

Pats coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday that he didn't think Mayo's injury was season ending. This admission seemed to rule out the worst case scenario of Mayo having a torn ACL, which caused QB Tom Brady to miss all of the 2008 season. Nonetheless, the loss represents a significant blow to the Patriots defense, which had high hopes for Mayo after he was the 2008 Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Patriots are also thin at linebacker with only seven on the roster after the retirement of Tedy Bruschi and the trade of Mike Vrabel in the offseason.

Mayo, who plays the "Mike" linebacker in the Patriots 3-4 defense, finished 10th in the league with 128 tackles last season. Mayo's speed and his ability to shed blockers makes him a particularly tough linebacker to block and he is a critical piece to the Patriots run defense. Mayo is no stranger to playing through pain after playing with a hurt left shoulder for most of last year. He was unable to raise his shoulder above his head and still made 23 tackles (17 of them solo) against the New York Jets last year in a memorable performance.

The Patriots drafted Mayo with the 10th overall pick in 2008.

Pats might be interested in signing Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Brooks?

11:50 AM Wed, Sep 16, 2009

By Robert Lee, Providence Journal

With Jerod Mayo shelved for a few weeks with a reported sprained MCL, one linebacker that the Patriots are interested in adding to the team is Tampa Bay free agent Derrick Brooks, the Boston Herald is reporting, citing an unnamed source close to the situation.

Brooks has been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times in his career and has been selected first team All-NFC 9 times.

During his conference call yesterday, Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio said that the Patriots could be interested in signing another linebacker now that Mayo has been shelved for an undisclosed period of time.

"We'll evaluate what the alternatives might be, whether that's internally or externally," Caserio said. "If we feel that there's an opportunity for us to add a player that we feel can help our club, then we'll go ahead and do that."

Defensive coordinator Dean Pees said: "Nothing is out of the realm of what we might try."

makes sense...

Boy, this really hurts the Pats. Watching Monday Night, I was astonished at how slow the entire defense seemed to be. Either that, or Fred Jackson is the reincarnation of Barry Sanders. Because when he got in space, or out on the edges, he looked like he was on fast forward compared to the D.

Once Mayo was out, the only guy I saw who had any speed at all was Meriwhether. Adalius Thomas was the only other guy who had wheels at all, and he's 32. I think Leon Washington might have a field day this week.

On a related note, how bad did Wilfork miss Seymour attracting the O Line's attention? Talk about a guy who looked slow. I'm seeing a lot of 48-44 final scores in the Pats' future.

The Pats double covered Owens and Evans all game long, so there was a void from the LOS until the secondary practically the entire game. Certainly the LB corps didn'tlook great, but the coverage schemes and game plan didn't seem to adjust to the fact that Jackson was free to roam around seemingly at will.

as you mentioned, crable is out, woods is an olb who didn't even play much monday, and I wouldn't be counting on alexander to save anybody's ###.if they wanted to, they could pull thomas inside, but he isn't 'young' talent, and then you'd have a void at olb.

monday night they rolled w/the 4-3, replacing mayo w/guyton, I believe.

they're actually fairly thin after losing mckenzie, crable, and mayo, on top of trading vrabel and retiring bruschi.
