Raiders | Despite personal issues, Porter remains team's top slot receiver

Published Wed Aug 23 2:56:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports disgruntled Oakland Raiders WR Jerry Porter, currently no higher than No. 5 on the depth chart, remains the team's best slot receiver with the status of injured WR Ronald Curry (Achilles') up in the air. Porter will likely still play an important role in the offense, as the Raiders are filled with receivers who are better suited playing on the outside.

OUCH!

If the Raiders were smart they would make him more than that too. It takes two to tango and hopefully these two will stop dancing around soon. Either trade him or put him in a position where he'll earn his salary.

The Raiders haven't tango-ed at all. From a team standpoint, they haven't been drawn into a media pissing contest with Porter, and they can't put him into a position to make plays, if he's not practicing. They gave this guy a new deal last year, he got a 4 mill SB, so if he wants to get traded, he can pay that back. Look how complicated the Lelie trade was, and he was in the last year of a rook deal, with little salary cap considerations. So it's not so easy to just trade him away.Porter has missed most of camp with a "calf" injury, but he's been cleared to practice. There's no evidence he's being blackballed, either. Part of Shell's plan involved discipline, and everyone on the team, except Porter, has bought into it, embraced it. Randy Moss has run sprints after practice for false starts and said he thinks it's great. So it's not so easy to play the one guy that is not on the same page, and hasn't practiced. What kind of message does that send? There are similarities to the TO situation, except:1. Shell doesn't already command respect as the Big Kahuna like Parcells does. He needs to earn it. While I think Parcells can get away with bending his own rules for a talent like TO, Shell can't, IMO.2. Porter isn't as talented as TO. I think a lot of players understand that stars get certain breaks, but Porter is no TO.3. The cupboard isn't bare in Oakland. Moss, Gabriel, Morant, and Curry has returned to practice. It's the one position on the team where the Raiders have great depth. If Curry is healthy, in fact, he's better in the slot than Porter. A big if, though.Porter has been an Al Davis favorite since he arrived. He had trouble with Gruden, and developed a rep as a primadonna back then. He still got a new deal, with almost no negotiations. And the first thing he does is show up in camp, get into an argument with Biletnikoff and Shell, and say that he wants out. This is not a Marcus Allen situation. Not yet. Shell hasn't shown that he's playing any kind of a power game. He started practicing again, and Shell put him in the 49er game. If he pulls his head out of his rectum, he'll get more PT.

Gabriel is the starter currently and I would take him over a possible #3 WR at best. If anything Porter when on will draw much more attention then Gabriel. I see Gabriel as a sleeper since most of the times he falls through a draft. I just finished my 14 team one and he went undrafted. I picked him up after the draft was over..

:goodposting: Pretty much sums it all up.If Curry proves healthy, JP will be ridin pine or shipped. He won't get away with this act if the potential depth at the position pans out.

Per KFFL:

Raiders | Curry returns to practice TuesdayTue, 22 Aug 2006 19:20:00 -0700The San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry (Achilles') returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 22. He said his appearance on the field was long overdue. "I've been ready since Day 1," said Curry, who has missed portions of the past two seasons with a torn Achilles' and has been held out of drills. The team apparently wanted to make sure he's 100 percent healthy. Head coach Art Shell said he doubted Curry would play in Friday night's preseason game, Aug. 25, against the Detroit Lions at the Coliseum. Curry said he would be ready. "I expect to play," he said.
Curry practiced Wednesday. It going to interesting to see if Curry can covince Shell to let play ion Friday.

Raiders | Gabriel needs to improve consistency

Sun, 27 Aug 2006 21:34:50 -0700

Phil Barber, of the Press Democrat, reports Oakland Raiders WR Doug Gabriel has dropped too many passes throughout training camp and in the preseason – a problem that could relegate him to No. 4 on the depth chart at receiver if WR Ronald Curry (Achilles') returns to form and WR Jerry Porter emerges from head coach Art Shell's doghouse before the season opener.

Im was kind of banking on Gabriel being my 4 or 5 WR. Now Im concerned my bench will be way too thin. How concerned should I be about this?

When everything is said and done...Porter will be the #2. His talent is far above any of the other WR's (exluding Randy Moss, of course).

So all things being even, consensus is that Curry will get the start over Gabriel (unless Porter gets it)?

Even though Gabriel is listed as WR2 on the depth charts?

I don't think that's the consensus at all. I think one guy from the Press-Democrat said that Gabe could drop to #4.IF Curry stays healthy and IF Porter shapes up.Unfortunately, those are two big IF's.

I don't think he's more talented than a healthy Ron Curry.
The Raiders would trade Porter if they could get anything for him. He is another in the line of over-rated guys we have.. Like Woodson. Unless I see anything concrete Gabriel will be the #2. Also, note this is an assumption not anything offical.. Keep that in mind..

I have a feeling we won't know how this plays out till week 3. Either that or the Raiders WR2 is not worth having.

For what it's worth I like Gabriel to emerge from this situation.

I think this is most likely. Moss, C. Anderson, Lamont, Curry.....there's a lot of bodies. The only guy that could be a worth it is Porter, and he's in limbo. I think both Gabriel and Porter are worth a spot on the end of the bench, but only Porter has the ability to be a WR3. Gabe has no "possesion guy" in him. He's not gonna have too many 5 or 6 catch games. Bump up Gabe in leagues that reward long plays.

Difference is...the Raiders aren't just taking anything for him, they are commanding 1st rounder. That tells me, they don't want to trade him. If they truly wanted to move him, they would work out a deal where they get a body back that they need or a reasonable draft pick. Remember Javon went for a 2nd, who has more upside...why would someone give a 1st for Porter? On another front, I think it's ridiculous for someone to say that Curry is better than Porter too. What has Curry done? Oh yeah, one decent season...come on be serious! Sounds liek bitter feeling towards Porter raising the value for another WR on the roster.
