I don't really fault them. Paterno deserves no love by us but the guy was their father/husband. This cannot be a pleasant situation to come to terms with. The Paterno family statement makes me sick. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Most of the Paterno defenders in this thread have either disappeared or changed their position. But there are still plenty of people out there who continue to blindly defend JoPa's actions. I don't expect the Freeh Report to change those people's minds. Their talking points will just shift from "He did the right thing" to "One tiny mistake shouldn't destroy a man's reputation."These people actually exist? Awhile ago, before the trial, people were saying his being fired killed him. Actually he had cancer.I wonder if guilt and/or realizing the sh#t storm that would be coming is what killed him.
Just have the creator redo it so that ol' Joe is looking the other way and not saying anything.I believe by this time next week the tear the statue down crowd will be large and loud
Loss of football recruits and/or alumni donations? If Sandusky had been arrested in 1998, the headlines would have read "Current PSU coach arrested". That's still a pretty big scandal. There would have been an external investigation into the culture of PSU, and Schultz might have lost his job, and Paterno might have lost his control over the campus police department. If Sandusky had been arrested in 2001, it would have been an even bigger scandal, because then people would start wondering why the 1998 incident and the 2000 incident (when the janitors saw Sandusky) were never fully investigated. Paterno would be seen as a hero for calling the police.....but he would also be seen as clueless old man who allowed a child molester to roam free right under his nose for 32 years. Paterno would have been quietly forced to retire and he would have failed in his quest to be the coach with the Most Wins In Division 1 Football History.Really, anything that tarnishes PSU football is going to tarnish Joe Paterno by proxy. Joe staked his legacy on the idea that he ran the cleanest program in the country, that HIS methods and HIS culture fostered the best in people. Joe would have ended his career looking like a complete fool for creating a culture that was easily exploited by evil.Question: how would Sandusky being charged in 1998 or 2001 have impacted Joe's personal legacy? I dont see the motive. Keeping psu in general out of the news or protecting a friend etc., yes, but i do not see how Joe's legacy would have been tarnished back then if Sandusky was just reported and there was no implied cover-up. So, what would the motive have been in 1998 and again in 2001 for Schultz?
I can see this being Joe's perception, but I don't think this would come close to the public perception. I would have only solidified Joe's public perception as being a straight arrow. It might have been a bad week or a bad month, but compared to the avarice he showed, leads me to believe only one thing, Joe thought he could cover it up. And the reason why he thought that is because he had other things killed in the past. Nothing to this level I would sincerely hope to God, but I'm sure more than we'll ever know was able to swept under the rug.Loss of football recruits and/or alumni donations? If Sandusky had been arrested in 1998, the headlines would have read "Current PSU coach arrested". The bolded is probably right, and as I've said, I think the wins record was a huge motivator for him. But it's harder to see the motive for the other guys involved, other than McQueary. Spanier was well known, liked and regarded. What is his motivation for this? And I don't buy the "Joe could have had him fired" angle because he could easily have found another Pres job and getting "fired" by a cranky old coach wasn't going to be that much of a negative on the resume anyway. It's just so much risk for so little reward. That's why it seems easy to me to believe that they really thought this was one or two isolated incidents. I understand, even one incident is terrible and would have put Sandusky in jail. It just seems that they must of thought, with decent reason, that he hadn't really done it before and wouldn't do it again. In that case, I think a cover up make more sense from a motivation/risk/reward point of view. But from a "Sandusky has raped kids in the past, was now seen by an eyewitness, and will continue to do it in the future" angle for a coverup, I just don't see how it makes sense. I know we don't always get rational actors, but to have that many irrational actors seems like a stretch to me. Hope the report comes out soon.I can see this being Joe's perception, but I don't think this would come close to the public perception. The last paragraph there is pretty interesting. "A source who has reviewed all the early 2001 emails said the few that have been leaked "are definitely out of context. We think the one that was released was the worst one for everybody."ESPN article
Good.Initially, the Freeh Group had intended to allow Penn State's trustees to review a draft copy of its report before releasing it to the public. After the Faculty Council and others at Penn State criticized that plan last winter, the Freeh Group decided to release its final report, without review or prior input by the trustees, directly to the board and the public at the same time, several sources said.
"They did not want people to think the board had influenced the process," a source said.
I'm not sure what he'd be wrong about if he reported the released emails correctly?Since we're close (I think) to reading the report, I'm not really speculating on what the emails will all say or what the whole report will say. There will be a lot of things in it besides emails, and I imagine it'll take awhile to read. Even though some of it may be quite ugly I'm looking forward to reading it.The last paragraph there is pretty interesting. I agree, just seems like a weird paragraph to tack on to the end of a piece about how Paterno is so screwed (no pun intended).Anyway, agree that I think the report will be very telling. And I think most of those who follow PSU could have told you it will be tough on Paterno because he's always tried to be very controlling of punishments and discipline and that tendency is the very thing that allowed this to keep going on as long as it did.I'm not sure what he'd be wrong about if he reported the released emails correctly?Since we're close (I think) to reading the report, I'm not really speculating on what the emails will all say or what the whole report will say. You can be better than this. You guys set up a road trip for FBG's to meet up and dig Joe Pa up and kill him again, then piss on his grave? Just checking.

How on God's green earth did you think Jerry Sandusky was innocent. Are you from a parallel universe where raping kids was normal behavior?

I just use a constitution from time to time.. it says you're innocent until after the trial.. North Korea could use more scholars like you.

On a scale of Casey Anthony to Jerry Sandusky, how much do you love kids.![]()

I mean, how do you not laugh when reading that? Paterno bashing has turned into the Aristocrats joke, where people just keep getting stupider and stupider to try to express their indignity, just in case you didn't think they were indignant enough. Days before the release of a widely anticipated report on Penn State’s role in the child abuse case involving the former football assistant Jerry Sandusky, the family of Joe Paterno released a statement Tuesday questioning the integrity of the inquiry and saying that because it had not been allowed to review the findings, its viewpoint would not be properly reflected.
Someone needs to park a badmeat taco truck in the cemetery and the only port o let must be a bottomless one over Paterno's grave.I mean, how do you not laugh when reading that? Chances that server isn't a pile of ash by 9:01?The Freeh report will be released for all the world to see at 9am tomorrow morning on their own website.http://thefreehreportonpsu.com/
The fact that anyone can laugh at any level of disdain someone has for this man, no matter how far fetched or hyperbole riddled, is what's hilarious. Glad I could provide you humorless twats with at least one laugh. It's the least I could do after you JoPa fan boys have provided the sane people around here with countless ones.I mean, how do you not laugh when reading that? I know you'd like the story to start and end at Sandusky, but like it or not, Paterno is permanently linked to the Sandusky story. Not true in the slightest. Paterno does get the most attention, but then again, most people had not heard of Spanier, Schultz or Curley before the scandal. The bigger you are, the harder you fall. In addition, no one worships those 3 as a hero, so there isn't anyone defending them. Believe it or not, this thread would be a lot shorter if no one defended Paterno.BS.
