any chance hobson gets moved inside, his body type and speed seem better suited for that than OLB in a 3/4 scheme. He is stout and a good tackler. But i doubt he can get around OTs off the edge. Or will he be benched?

I think hte jets are in for a long season, i want their defenders

Hobson is going to be on the ouside.

Eric Barton will be on the insdie next to Vilma. Though, Barton's job will be holding Vilma's jock as he watches Vilma make all the plays.

Go after Justin Miller if your league awards points for KR yardage.

RAPTURE

I agree with RAPTURE, but I suspect Mangini will use a lot of rotation in the LB corp, with only Vilma being an every down LB. I think Barton is next in line for most D snaps amoung the LB's.

It's also not set in stone that the Jets will supply the NFL with a depth chart that shows a 3-4 alignment. Like Saban did with Miami, Mangini may use the 4-3 as the base defense in the depth chart he sends to the NFL, which, in turn, will show up at NFL.com. The Jets will still run some 4-3, I'm sure of that, but how much is the question. Ellis will get almost every snap as a DE, but his FF value will jump up or down, based on how much 3-4 the Jets use. If the Jets use a 4-3 depth chart, Bryan Thomas' value will go way up, as a rush LB/DE, because he would be listed as a DE, not an LB.

Mangini is big on using players in a rotation, especially on defense. He wants fresh legs on defense in the 4th quarter.

Rovers, I like your addition of Bryan Thomas. Bryan Thomas is going to be playing the OLB (weakside) position with added responsibilites of playing some DE. I think he could possess very good value as a sleeper pick in the later rounds. RAPTURE

It all depends on the depth chart! That's what drives me nuts! If he's listed as an OLB.... well, his fantasy value is in the can. If he gets listed as a DE, he's quite possibly top ten. I'm sure the Jets will run both alignments, but way too many people think Mangini will run the 3-4 exclusively. That's a mistake. I'm not suggesting any talent comparison, but I see Bryan Thomas being used much the same way Jason Taylor gets used in Miami by Saban.Mangini isn't about the 3-4 as much as he wants to be versatile. He wants to confuse the offense, and be hard to game plan against. He wants to avoid predictabilty. I've seen Bellichick run a 1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2. Pennington never knew what the Patriots would throw at him. He'd call an audable based on what he saw, and then on next look, it wasn't a 3-4, it was a 4-3, with the DE lined up WAY outside. Then, that DE might drop into coverage instead.

Other than the DB's and Vilma, I would not draft any Jets IDP at least at this point in time. But, TC is now less than 3 weeks away! :pickle: I plan on attending at least 10 times this year. Even with that, it might not mean much.... I'm sure Mangini will spend a lot of time teaching the 3-4, which will likely fuel the idea that is what he'll run almost all the time. In any case, I'll offer my TC observations up here anyways.

Thanks as always Rovers for your homer insight and information. Look forward to your training camp notes and observations

Bump.... an interesting thread. So was this one...

http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...9&hl=Thomas

Sometimes, early projections do come to some degree of fruition.

Players I appear to have been right about: Vilma dropping out of the top ten LB's, B Thomas being a top ten DE since he remains listed as one, Rhodes has tailed off some, but still looks like a pro bowl candidate, McCariens days of being a productive FF WR with the Jets appear to be over, Pennington's arm is fine. Brad Smith could be very good down the road. Coleman has lost playing time.

Players I got wrong: Barton has played better than I expected. Miller has been a disappointment. The Jets run D is much worse than I thought it would be,, and the offense significantly better than I thought. Dyson, while I did call him a potential sleeper, has been better than expected.

I just found it interesting to look back at early reports (not just my own) and see how they worked out. These preseason and TC threads are gold.
