Jets intrigued by JaMarcus Russell (1 Viewer)

The Jets have made a cursory phone call about former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, ESPN.com reports. The former No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft was released by Oakland in May, and the Jets seemingly have a need for a backup quarterback, with Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge behind Mark Sanchez. The report says the call is part of GM Mike Tannenbaum's strategy to investigate every available player. It lists the Cardinals and Vikings as Russell's most likely destinations. (New York Post)

If he signs with the team, then Jets fans better hope that Sanchez can stay healthy!

Possible replacement for Faneca as the rookie they drafted gets bulked up to handle the NFL load?

Mentor for Sanchez? No.

Able to lead a playoff ready team in the short term if Sanchez is injured? No.

Why would the Jets be interested?

I really don't understand how any NFL GM would even consider Russell----Cardinals, Vikings or Jets----neither of these teams needs to look at Russell. If Matt Millen were still in charge somewhere, yeah maybe I could see him taking a good hard look, but other than that, nobody should.

If you got Tavaris jackson rostered as a back up QB... you consider anything that that can throw a football.
Russell can't throw a football.......Jackson can.

It was discussed when Russell was released, and I say this with a straight face, that he could try another position. The only other position I can fathom him trying out for at 300 lbs is a D lineman. It would be a hoot to watch him have to actually earn his check getting mauled by real men.

Without knowing your skill set I'd much prefer to have you as my backup QB than JR...At least you'd try.
I never said they prefer JM over TJ... I just stated say they would consider him/anyone. ALL OPTIONS ARE ON THE TABLE, when you have TJ as a back up.
Is TJ really that bad as a backup? I really don't know. When you look across the league and check out the backups it's hard to get excited about most of them (besides 1st rounders being groomed for the job).I think if Russell has an epiphony and really wants to be a starting QB in the NFL his bet best is to join another league for a few years to show everyone that he's putting in the work. As another poster alluded to, I can't imagine anyone really wanting to give him a chance. Jon Gruden is no longer a coach.

Various teams are kinda sorta not really interested in JaMarcus Russell

It’s quiet on the JaMarcus Russell front, but here’s the best we can do.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork writes that the Jets have been “monitoring” JaMarcus Russell and even checked under his rock. (Big rock.)

But the interest appears to be “cursory” and a union is highly unlikely. Here’s where it gets interesting.

Cimini writes that the Vikings and Cardinals are Russell’s most likely destinations, according to sources. (It’s important to keep in mind that “most likely” still means unlikely in this case.)

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the chances of Russell landing in Minnesota are not high, which should be obvious enough just by looking at the depth chart. Then again, Zulgad finishes his post like so:

“It’s believed that if something is going to happen with Russell it might take a while to play out,” he writes.

That line indicates at least a scrap of interest, which is more than we’d expect from Minnesota. Either way, this sounds like Russell’s agent trying to drum up business. We think it will take a while for any “cursory” interest in Russell to turn more serious.

A while could mean 2011.

ETA:

The Jets are looking to acquire a veteran quarterback before training camp and, while league sources maintain that free agent Mark Brunell remains the odds-on favorite, Tannenbaum isn’t ignoring other options. Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in 2007, is training in Arizona, trying to get in shape. Sources say the Arizona Cardinals or the Minnesota Vikings are the most likely landing spot for Russell, but the Jets have inquired by phone and received positive reports.

The Jets wouldn’t be handcuffed by the NFL’s “Final Eight” rules if they decide to sign Russell; that’s because he was released by another team. To sign Brunell, an unrestricted free agent, the Jets would have to wait until late July, when the restrictions are lifted.

He needs to join another league & do well to ever have a shot again in the NFL IMO. And stop using the "working out in Arizona" excuse. If you weigh 300 lbs and have been working out here for 4+ months now - you need a new trainer & monitor of your diet.

One of the correspondents on NFL Total Access just said this has about a 10% chance of happening.

(Or, Russell's completion percentage.)

Cimini used to be a Jets beat reporter, and a very negative one at that. His "sources" were wrong as often as they were right. His habit was to tweak Jets fans as often as possible, and it seems his modus operendi hasn't changed a bit. As for his football accumen, he tends to trash draft picks, as he did with Sione Pouha saying he plays like a grandmother and doesn't belong in the NFL, or words to that effect. Well, Pouha proved him wrong last year as he stepped up to replace the injured Jenkins nicely.

I think Cimini's next job should be with the National Enquirer.

He had such talent and potential (according to many) a few short years ago. Someone will bring him into camp. Busts like Ryan Leaf got camp invites after their first team. Some coaches/GMs just have to see for themselves that some players aren't very good.

:goodposting: I think Cimini saw the changing landscape in Sports Media from print to the internet, blogs and sensationalism along with the plethora of information these days that makes the daily beat reporters job somewhat obsolete and decided to sign up for the Mike Florio school of Sports Reporting where you write articles for the reaction. No matter what the hell you write, If it excites people and incites reaction, it' a good article.Meanwhile, when asked about Russel Rex Ryan said "ummm, yeah, :chuckle: NO ####'# Way", says an unnamed source close to the team's thinking.

Yup, what ringing endoresement for Sage and Tarvaris.Look guys, we are already doing everything we can to hold onto a 40 year old QB...but we are also going to bring in one of the worst QBs ever to replace at least one of you.

So why consider Russell? Did you mean anything that could EAT a football?

Somewhere, Jeff George's ears are burning...

 Be sure and tip your waitress

he's a decent backup, better than what a few other teams in the division have. No way the vikes are looking at russel imo, I have heard nothing of the sort up here besides a one liner from a beat reporter.

The Jets are not at all interested in this POS. Unless he can carry the water bottles to and from the lockerroom. There is zero chance they sign this loser.

I think the teams actually interested aren't saying anything. With Vicks problems he could be developed. Troy Smith would be better though.

He brings absolutely nothing to the table as a 2nd or 3rd qb. He has a horrible work ethic, he can't read defenses, and he is woefully inaccurate. Why any team would consider wasting a roster spot on Russell is truly puzzling.

Jets drop JaMarcus interest

06:09 AM ET 07.06 | JaMarcus Russell effectively eliminated himself from becoming a Jet any time this millennium with his latest bonehead move. The free agent quarterback was arrested at his Alabama home today for possession of a controlled substance during a police investigation. The former Raiders signal caller was busted for codeine syrup, which can be mixed with soda to create "Purple Drank." (Russell didn't have a prescription for codeine).

Like I said ZERO interest. They never had any to begin with. All they did is walk up behind him and his agent and flick the back of his ear to see the reaction...then go behind closed doors and laugh.
