First is a bit of news... Revis just signed. He will practice tomorrow, which is a closed walk through for Minny Friday night.

Coleman has now clearly taken over as the 3-4 DE opposite Ellis. The Jets still run some 4-3 in camp, but the rotations are so crazy, it's hard to tell who is lining up where in the 4-3. I will say I've seen Bryan Thomas as a down DE in both formations, but not all that often. In the nickle and dime, all bets are off. Crazy rotations. Only Ellis and Vilma are very down players on the front seven, with Thomas getting 90%, but at different spots, DE in pass D, OLB in the standard 3-4, DE in the 4-3.

Still on bikes are E Smith, Miller and D Coleman. Dyson and Barrett have been taking most snaps at CB, Poteat in at nickle, but all subject to change with the Revis signing and when Miller returns. The rookie LB Harris is not getting any snaps with the ones yet.

The Jets look like they will be a near wasteland of FF IDP studs with the exception of Rhodes and Vilma.

Sure, players like Hobson and Barton will likely repeat last years' numbers, as will Thomas, but at what positional listing?

Right now, he's an OLB. E Coleman is safe for the time being, but could lose time to Smith when he returns.

Just a couple O notes.... Chansi Stuckey is a nice sleeper, with a really good long term upside. He has greathands, and leaves DB's looking for their socks in the open field. Ware is the #3 RB. Sean Ryan is an H back, and he's getting a lot of plays installed for him in that role.... especially around the goal line, where they will line him up behind the TE, use Barnes (FB) as a lead blocker, and throw bodies at the D's strong side.... but then have some plays where Ryans fakes a block, and goes to the corner of the end zone. They also play off that formation, while Ryans stays in to block, it's Baker who releases and heads for the corner of the end zone. Expect to see this play and it's variations called a lot inside the ten this year.

The run D seems improved, the run blocking between the tackles not. That's pretty much it for FF relavent stuff...

Anyone think Vilma is likely to improve on last years numbers, with this being his 2nd year in the new scheme?

Not me. I don't think it was unfamiliarity with the scheme that torpedoed his numbers. I think it was the scheme. Same scheme, same result.

He'll almost certainly improve on the 67 solo tackles he posted in 2006. But the improvement will be relatively minimal unless the Jets play more 4-3 than they did last year. The same scheme issues exist as last year -- questionable NT play, likely in the poorer ILB role -- which will be difficult to overcome even after he becomes more comfortable in the scheme.

Eric Smith was having a strong camp before he pulled his hammy. I think he will be the starting SS by mid season

I heard a Vilma interview, so no link, but he was saying that people should not expect to see him making plays from sideline to sidline as he did in Herm Edwards' 4-3. He said it won't happen in this scheme, unless it's in the nickle or dime. He is a stay at home LB in this scheme, and feels that any critisism he got last year was largely unfounded because those critics don't understand his role in Mangini's defense. He gave himself a B/B- on his performance last year.

His FF production should improve some, with improved play at NT and Coleman replacing Kimo VonOldhoffen at DE, and will likely get a few more INT's and such, but I would not look for any big bumps in his numbers... perhaps a 15% increase in his FF numbers would be a reasonable expectation IMO.

So mid-season, if Vilma's disappointing again, get him for cheap. Who knows how long you'll have to stash him, but I'll go for the DJ Williams approach on this one.

 Vilma will be a free agent after next season. He could command big money as a MLB in a 4-3. He is not worth the money in the 3-4, so I keep wondering if he may be moved this offseason, so the Jets at least get something. I can't see the Jets paying what he is worth in the open market to be a 3-4 LB, which really isn't his best position.Good time to be a forward thinker. You may land a future stud LB for fairly cheap.
