Jim Mora Jr's comments to a Seattle radio station (1 Viewer)

Didn't see any previous threads on this...

I heard ESPN radio comment that Jim Mora Jr. would definitely take the head coaching position with the Univ. of Washington if the job was offered to him, going on to say that even if Atlanta was in the middle of a playoff run, he'd take that job in a heartbeat. The initial conversation was on a Seattle radio station and ESPN radio was discussing the story as well as its ramifications.

Currently looking for a link. This is fairly big news, especially being that ATL has a huge game coming up tomorrow night at home vs. Dallas.

I heard this too. The guy that was subbing for Cowherd seem very bitter that he didn't get the interview since he is based in Atlanta. He was being a real baby about it, but I do think this could be pretty big news. They didn't have audio of the interview though, so I will wait until I hear it for myself.

I heard the audio on NFL Network - Sirius. Worse than you can ever imagine.

Cannot see how he coaches tomorrow night - that bad.

Jerry Rice said he needs to go today.

I heard the audio on Sirius. He made it a point to say that he was serious. I'm from Atlanta so I hope they show him the door today!

FWIW, one of the ESPN Radio guys (Wingo or Schlereth) was speculating that this probably means that Mora's already been told by the Falcons that he won't be retained beyond this year.

I heard the interview as well. I think your right. He talked so open about the UW job that he must know his days are numbered.

Didn't they give him an extension last year? If so, what a mess.

this is excellent news for the falcons imo

that guy seems like a monumentous tool and has done nothing of note with the team since he started

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Jim Mora wants out? At a time when his team is in the throews of a playoff chase? To coach a college team in Seattle?

In an interview with KJR Radio in Seattle Friday morning with co-hosts Dave Mahler and Hugh Millen, Mora said he would love to coach his alma mater, the University of Washington - even if the Falcons are "in the middle of a playoff run. I'm packing my stuff and coming to Seattle."

It was not serious, both Mora and Millen said afterward.

"He was my college roommate and we were just talking and he threw that out there so it was like, 'okay.' We were clowning around," Mora said, referring to Millen. "It was nothing serious, trust me."

Millen and Mahler, later in their broadcast, tried to emphasize the supposed sarcastic nature of interview. In a phone interview, Millen tried to clarify things further.

"I know Jimmy really well and from his perspective he's talking to the Seattle market and it was his way of expressing his affection for the University of Washington," Millen said. "I didn't take it literally. I know how he feels about coaching the Falcons and Michael Vick and he loves it. I have a pretty good insight as to where his heart is and what he's thinking and he loves his situation there."

ESPN, which is affiliated with KJR, sent out transcripts and a link to the interview. A controversial buzz about Mora's remarks spread rapidly through radio, television, the Internet and print media.

Team owner Arthur Blank could not be reached for comment.

Here is a sample of the interview via transcripts emailed by ESPN:

Interviewer: "If there's an opening, and you're available, we want you to coach the Huskies."

Mora: "Well, I really have a lot of respect for [Washington Coach] Ty [Willingham], and I know he'll do a great job. But if he ever decides to move on, and get in the NFL or you know, go back to Notre Dame or whatever, if that job's open you'll find me at the friggin' head of the line with my resume in my hand ready to take that job."

Interviewer: "If you're available."

Mora: "It doesn't even matter if I'm available."

Interviewer: "So if you just won the Super Bowl, and it's available, you're there?"

Mora: "I'd be there."

Interviewer: "You're there, okay."

Mora: "I'd do it, I promise you that. Now, I want to see Ty succeed, and I want to see that program succeed. But if he decides at some point that he's ready to move on and they want me, I will be there. I don't care if we're in the middle of a playoff run I'm packing my stuff and coming back to Seattle."

Interviewer: "So, are you saying...?"

Mora: "You know, it's funny, and I mean that, and I'm dead serious, the further I get away from it the more I'm drawn to it. You know, that's the job I want, so..."

Interviewer: "You would leave the Falcons for that job?"

Mora: "Absolutely."

Interviewer: "Wow."

I don't see the harm in discussing hypothetical situations
you don't see the harm in this? Jim Mora jr. is the head coach of a NFL team that has a HUGE game saturday night and he said that he would leave the falcons to coach at UW, right now. That is about the dumbest thing you could say to anyone, let alone a radio show.

After reading that transcript it seems to me like Mora was not serious and a bunch of people are getting their panty's in a wad over nothing.

sounds serious enough to me  . if he was kidding he wouldn't have confirmed it multiple times.

Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Jim Mora apologized Friday afternoon for comments he made in a radio interview where he indicated he would leave Atlanta for the University of Washington.

In a statement released by the Falcons, Mora said "First and foremost, I'm sorry. Despite my off-the-cuff intentions, what I said was not appropriate for my players, the Falcons organization and our fans, and (current Washington Coach) Tyrone Willingham. I got too relaxed with the radio talk show host, who is a former college roommate, and I got carried away with the banter."

Mora added "I want every fan in Atlanta to know that my heart and passion are right here with the Falcons and winning our game this weekend."

If the Washington job were actually open than maybe I'd think this was serious but it's not open and Mora knows it's not and I believe him when he said he was just talking up the program and the job and that's all I think it was.

"The second half, we just got our ### totally kicked! Vick couldn’t do diddley poo offensively! Vick couldn’t make a first down. Vick couldn’t run the ball. Vick didn’t try to run the ball! Vick couldn’t complete a pass. Vick sucked! The second half, we sucked! Vick couldn't stop the run. Everytime they got the ball, they went down, and got points! We got our ### totally kicked in the second half. That's what it boiled down to. It was a horse#### performance in the second half! Horse####! I’m totally embarrassed. I’m totally ashamed. Coaching did a horrible job! Vick did a horrible job! We got our ### kicked in that second half! Vick sucked.

:wall:

This is better.

Where are they now? - former New England Patriots scrub QB's edition ;)

If he was being sarcastic or not, there's always a little truth to all sarcasm.
I think that this is more of a lesson about how humor is subjective and easily misunderstood. Say what you will about Mora, he's not going to commit NFL-career suicide by boasting openly about wanting out of his Falcons coaching gig. If you're after a little truth, the "little truth" here is that he'd probably enjoy coaching UW, not that he wants out of the Falcons head coaching job.

Unless like what was mentioned before he knows the Falcons are going to let him go. In that case he is just getting a jump start on looking for a new job.

Even if he knew he was done as the Falcons coach how could he be getting a jump start on looking for a new job by saying he'd take a job that's not open?

If he had not already lost that team, then he probably did with that comment and subsequent back track. I expect the Cowboys are going to knock the Falcons franchise back a few years on Saturday night.

Mora was definitely not joking. He sealed his fate with that interview, and will be gone after the season, and probably doesn't mind. As one would assume, most teams perform poorly when their coach is distracted by other jobs during a game week. It happens more often in CFB.

just heard the clip. if he was kidding, i'm Santa Claus
:goodposting: Just heard it too. Clearly nothing sarcastic or humourous about the comments.
I just got a chance to listen to the clip. I have to agree - if he was kidding he did a very poor job expressing it and in fact his two "I'm serious" comments really can't be confused with kidding. Unbelievable. About all you can say about him is that at least he's not sneaking around. :bye: Jim.

That might be the stupidest thing I've ever heard an NFL head coach say.

I realize we live in a time of corporate doublespeak and press releases, and spin and media manipulation. But isn't there some point left at which you just fire someone?

I thought he was kidding, John Clayton tought he was kidding, Wilbon and Kornhieser also tought he was kidding. It was still stupid because it did appear to draw Blanks ire and the team could have lived without the distraction. IMO just a joke that went over poorly and could be he nail in Mora's coffin but it was just a joke.

Mora's a jerk. i hear him on Sirius every week. If you heard him absolutely lay out Brian Reagan (or whoever it was) for mentioning Vick was not passing well you would think so too. He yelled at him like he was a little kid. He came off like a silver spoon little self-absorbed punk.

Now he says something utterly stupid and says "hopefully we win one and it all goes away". Don't dare question what he said. Then thinks we're all stupid and he was just joking. How many times to you have to say Yes, certainly, without question and absolutely in an interview before you're viewed as serious? He wasn't joking and t was obvious.

He's a loser and a hypocrite.

Tongue in cheek or not, it sure sounded like he was serious. An excerpt from the interview....Mora: Dewey, I promise you that. Now, I want to see Ty succeed, and I want to see that program succeed. But if he decides at some point that he's ready to move on and they want me, I will be there. I don't care if we're in the middle of a playoff run, I'm packing my stuff and coming back to Seattle.

Interviewer: So, are you saying ...

Mora: You know, it's funny, and I mean that, and I'm dead serious, the further I get away from it the more I'm drawn to it. You know, that's the job I want, so...

Interviewer: You would leave the Falcons for that job?

Mora: Absolutely.

Unless you were listening to comedian Brian Regan on "Laugh Break" on channel 105, I'm pretty sure you are speaking of Bruce Murray. And yes, I heard that. Mora can be quite petulant at times.

This is another case of context telling all. If he was talking to another interviewer, I would understand the disbelief. But Hugh Millen was his former college roommate. I could picture the two of them having the exact same conversation in a bar, pausing for a few seconds, then both of them bust out laughing at it. Mora just got a little too relaxed getting interviewed by a friend, and stopped considering how his comments would be taken by people hearing them.

This isn't legit, and just another media created firestorm, IMO.
