Jim Sorgi is done for year (1 Viewer)

Good news for Manning owners because it means he'll play through Week 16.
Not sure I agree with this. I would think that they locked up HFA this weekend, then they would want whoever their backup QB is to get at least some PT just in case Manning gets hurt in the post season?

I agree. If anything, it may be more of a reason to sit Manning when the Colts have things wrapped up in the AFC.One hit and Manning could be out. They know what they have in Sorgi - with Painter (or whomever), that's certainly not the case.

would you or could you ever see yourself starting Painter over someone else off of the waiver wire ... if so then I guess grab him but that just seems crazy to me

Didn't they bring in JP Losman for a tryout once the USFL (or whatever it was called) season was over?

If Manning gets hurt, their postseason is over.
If he is hurt in a playoff game and out for the rest of the playoffs, then yes. But not if he gets hurt in the 2nd half of a game they are winning, but is able to play the next week. From there they would need to have a guy to basically not blow it while he is out. Also, if Manning gets a season ending injury in the last two weeks, your right, their season is over. So based on that, why not play the backup at least some. What is the downside if you have the playoffs wrapped up?Probably wishful thinking on my part though, since the team I am chasing has Manning.

It could mean Peyton plays most of the game next Thursday night if the Colts win on Sunday. Expecting Painter to be prepared to play major minutes on a very short week may not be wise.

If Manning gets hurt, their postseason is over.
But, oddly enough, they'd still put a QB on the field to play the game. Whoever that QB will be could probably use some work.

With our playoffs starting, there are no longer waivers. If not Manning, then:

Sorgi

Delhomme

Bulger

Boller :lmao:

I wish I had Painter at this point. I guess I should have carried all the Colts QBs.

I agree. Sorry, I was just being dismissive because I don't think there's any value to the Colts 3rd string QB. But I can see him going in for 4th quarters going forward once they clinch.

As a Colts fan, I think I'd rather see them sign Losman than let Painter play the last two or three games.

That's not the best way to go 16-0, which I want to see, but it's not as bad as the alternative.

Anyone think Brown or Addai runs the wildcat here?

Remember the preseason game a few years ago when the Colts were resting their starters, so they signed some guy off the street and fed him the ball 40 times, then cut him the next day??

No. They need Addai fresh for the playoffs, and Brown is hurt.

Chad Simpson, then? If Manning doesn't play, you gotta presume that whoever starts at RB will get more touches than usual.....right?

Can you imagine how great it would be as Peyton's backup or Favre's in the past? Free money just for showing up and paying attention.
Actually being Favre's backup practically guaranteed that you would be a starter in the league at some point.
1993 & 95 - Detmer (yep; went to Philly and started for a year, but didn't fare so well)1994 - Brunell (yep)

1996-98 - Doug Pederson (also went to Philly and started for half a year but flamed out; then Cleveland signed him to be their starter, with even worse results)

1999 - Aaron Brooks (yep)

1999-2000 - Hasselbeck (yep)

2002-05 - Craig Nall (nope)

2004 - J.T. O'Sullivan (yep)

2005-07 - Aaron Rodgers (yep)

Since it is all a guessing game if the Colts beat the Broncos what happens after that, here's a glimpse from Indianapolis Star Colts beat writer Phillip B. Wilson:

The best chat I had was with DE Dwight Freeney. Because the Colts can clinch the AFC No. 1 playoff seed on Sunday, I wondered just how much rest he would get in between meaningful games. The reality here is that the Colts would not play another meaningful game for five weeks. The AFC Divisional playoff game would be on either Jan. 16 or 17th. That's a long time to rest.

Freeney told me in a group that the rest would really help, that his abdominal injury wouldn't truly go away until after the season was complete. Five weeks off wouldn't mean he's as fresh as in preseason at training camp, but Freeney said just one week would make a difference, let alone five. Away from the group, he conceded so much time off would make him as fresh for this playoffs as at any other time. He was excited just to talk about it.

He also said something interesting about how, while the Colts braintrusts haven't made their rest-or-play plan known yet, Freeney thinks it's different for the offense compared to the defense, which has been my educated guess. In other words, don't be surprised if the offensive starters go more at Jacksonville than some of the key players, like Freeney or Mathis.

I'm thinking both Freeney and Mathis will play sparingly the rest of the way after the Colts clinch. And clinching No. 1, with a three-game cushion and four games to play, seems as sure today as the observation that I'm a bit jaded.
This would make the most sense to me - have the offense play a good amount, and have the key defensive players sit.

Thought from one of the most in-the-know reporter/bloggers covering the Colts, John Oesher:

1. Today's thought on end-of-season strategy.

As written before, the reality we in the media/blogosphere/fandom can argue whatever we choose. The Colts are going to take the same approach they always have. At some point, if they are not undefeated, they will rest anybody remotely injured, and they also will rest particularly key players such as QB Peyton Manning, WR Reggie Wayne, Addai, TE Dallas Clark, DE Dwight Freeney, DE Robert Mathis, C Jeff Saturday and perhaps LB Gary Brackett and Bethea. This will make those who believe you must win to maintain postseason momentum angry and the Colts will not care. The X factors may be the unbeaten record and the time of the season. If the Colts clinch homefield Sunday, I can't see them resting many players against Jacksonville the following week and if they're still unbeaten after that, they'll have 10 days off before a home game against the Jets and the feeling may be that it's still too early to rest everyone. Even at 15-0, the Colts likely wouldn't play Manning and the rest of the front-line players much against Buffalo in the season finale. That game is likely to be cold with other weather elements, and given the choice between going for 16-0 and not risking Dwight Freeney's lower body in a snowstorm, the Colts almost certainly will opt for the latter.

The blurb above sounds about accurate. Win or loose against Denver, I think the offense is going to go full throttle in Jacksonville, especially being a Thursday night game with a long layoff after that.

Wk16 against the Jets is going to be the tricky one because they will have home field wrapped up no later than Jacksonville. I think the only chance the skill players on offense see a whole game is if they are 14-0 and want to get out there one last time.

Also, any possibility of sending Manning out for 1Q in week 17 to try and build a lead for the D to hold on to(if they were in fact 15-0)

Not sure I agree with this. I would think that they locked up HFA this weekend, then they would want whoever their backup QB is to get at least some PT just in case Manning gets hurt in the post season?
If Manning gets hurt, their postseason is over.
As opposed to having Jim Sorgi available to replace Peyton Manning?

No, I didn't say that. I said if Manning gets hurt, their postseason is over. It doesn't matter which backup was active. Same can be said with a lot of the teams out there, but I do think Manning is the MVP this year and is the single most important player linked to his teams success.
