Jimmy Raye II - 49ers Offensive Coordinator (1 Viewer)

Is there a reason this man hasn't really stuck with a team more than 2 years?

Raye has served as an NFL offensive coordinator for 11 seasons and on six separate occasions:

Los Angeles Rams (1983-84) Off Rank: '83-11 '84-12 (489P, 511R) , (358P, 541P) - ERICK DICKERSON

Los Angeles Rams (1991) Off Rank: 24 (518P, 388R)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1985-86) Off Rank: '85-25 , '86-26 (508P,434R), (459P,455R)

New England Patriots (1990) Off Rank: 28 (514P,383R)

Kansas City Chiefs (1998-2000) Off Rank: '98-14, '99-8, '00-9 , (543P,443R), (502P,521R), (582P,383R)

Washington Redskins (2001) Off Rank: 28 (432P,490R)

Oakland Raiders (2004-2005) Off Rank: 04'-18, '05-23 (582P,387R), (591P,361P)

Can anyone give me any background on this guy? I know the 9ers wanna run more but this guy really has no track record of success. Which season do you see the 9ers having as far as Passing/Running from his seasons above? What confidence do you have in this mans offense?

I'm a Niners fan. While it may not be the case, the hiring came across as a bit of a panic move by SF when it was starting to look like they were having problems finding a coordinator after others rejected them (Linehan and Mora).

I hardly think he's anything special but I doubt he'll hurt Gore's value. I really wouldn't want to rely on anyone else.

2006(7?) - the big breakout Gore year, the offense was horrific (one of the worst in the league), yet Gore was a big fantasy option. So I really wouldn't worry about him.

You ask for background, but your listing tells you about all you need to know. Nothing outstanding about the guy.

After Martz, GM McCloughan overreacted in finding someone safe and noncontroversial... and dull. Fans and writers weren't up in arms, but nevertheless were far from satisfied with this  choice.

The 49ers won't be very exciting but will be competitive most of the time, will show a fairly balanced offense (leaning more toward the run by today's pass happy standards), will end up about 6-10 or 7-9 in a fairly weak division, and Raye will last about one or two years here, just as he has elsewhere. As will Singletary most likely. Then Holmgren (or Shanahan) will arrive as HC, and Singletary and Raye will be more names on the ever-growign list of former coaches since the Walsh-Siefert era.

I didn't like this pick initially, and still have a lot of reservations.

But there is a big advantage to Raye. He isn't one of those offensive coaches with a big ego who will install "their" offense no matter what the personnel. He's much more likely to work with the players he has and tailor what he does to them. With the number of O-Coordinators that have the Niners have gone through in the past 5 years, not making wholesale changes takes on a bigger importance than a normal changeover.

That being said, I will agree that I expect, barring a ridiculously good season, that we will be seeing Holmgren or Shanny coming in next year in some capacity.

He wasn't Singletary's first choice. Linehan left the 49ers at the altar, and the Singletary just went with the guy who won't bail to another team for a HC position the following year. This is more of a panic move, not calculated.

He may be the perfect fit for a defensive minded coach. Conservative. Probably won't hurt Gore's value. But I'd knock down the WR value in SF. Keep in mind he was behind the development of Tony G. You may wanna bump up Vernon Davis.

Yes Drummer, you and isnitch both mentioned pursuit of Linehan before taking Raye in something of a panic move and you're right. I'd forgotten about the Linehan talks. Still, I think we're both saying the choice of Raye later was because he was a safe and vanilla and wasn't going to come in and stir up a lot of new stuff in the offense.
