Joe Mauer Stealing Signs (1 Viewer)

The Twins were half-offended and half-amused today, as a YouTube clip of Joe Mauer allegedly stealing signs from second base made the rounds on laptops and cell phones throughout the clubhouse.“That video’s a joke!” Justin Morneau said.“That’s why we’re three games back -- we’re stealing signs,” Manager Ron Gardenhire said . “We scored two runs last night, we stole a lot of signs.”Mauer won’t be available for comment until after today’s game against the Tigers. The clip is from Detroit’s 6-5 victory over the Twins on Tuesday in Game 2 of a day-night doubleheader at Comerica Park. After Mauer doubles, he is on second base as Jason Kubel battles Justin Verlander through a long at-bat. There is closed captioning in the video that suggests Mauer is relaying signs to Kubel during the at-bat.When Mauer grabs his ear flap, the closed captioning suggests he is telling Kubel that a curve ball is coming, with a touch of the face suggesting fastball.Kubel said the closed captioning was incorrect on a couple pitches.“Here goes a fastball or curveball, and it was a changeup,” Kubel said. “Otherwise I would have hit it (joke). I mean, if you look, Joe, even on first base he’s always touching his face and his ear, and he’s doing it without looking at the catcher, too.”But Tigers catcher Gerald Laird, another prominent player in the YouTube clip, told reporters the Twins have a reputation for being masters at stealing signs.“That’s what they’re known for,” Laird told the Washington Post.“That’s the best they can come up with? Chrysler,” Gardenhire said. “Every team in baseball tries to steal signs. Every team in baseball tries to get the coaches’ signs, the manager’s signs, so ... really that’s old stuff.”
I noticed that about the closed captioning. He mentions a fastball is coming but it was a changeup

Some pitchers will drill a base-runner that does this, not as much as in the past, but it still happens quite often. It's one of those un-stated rules. It's funny listening to the Twins deny this, but it's obvious, and they certainly aren't the only team that tries to pull this...

thats just a bad job by Laird of disguising the signals.
No it wasn't. Laird knew exactly what was happening and so did Verlander (and they switched it up several times) and I remember that at bat quite well. You must think this is something new, welcome to 1906 because they've been doing it at least that long. Every time there is a catcher on 2B this happens and in a game that big, it is Mauer who did a poor job of disguising signals. It was more than just a little obvious to everyone. I have no issue with it either, its part of the game.

The Tigers broadcast crew is talking about Mauer stealing signs during today's broadcast. The color commentary guy said "In the end it didn't make a difference as Verlander could have announced his pitches beforehand and they would not have hit them. He was lights out."

4 earned runs on 8 hits in 8 innings is lights out?

:goodposting: I've never understood why it's considered "cheating". It's not like throwing spit balls or swinging corked bats where you're altering equipment. If you can see the signs, go ahead and try to figure out what they mean. :lmao:

When it's so obvious and the battery knows, how could the catcher not make a quick trip to the mound to change something? Or the pitcher call him out.

Stealing signs is not cheating. Getting mad about players stealing signs is stupid. If you can't disguise your signs well enough, perhaps you need better signs?

8ks, 1.00 WHIP, and 2 runs and 3 hits came with 1 out in the 8th. He was hitting 99 in the 1st, and 99 in the 8th and his curve was off the charts good. He was pretty good that night through 115 pitches.

Baseball is all about cheating. I am being completely serious nor do I mean that in a bad way.

Stealing signs, greasing baseballs...this stuff has been going on in baseball long before I was around and I hope it's around long after I'm gone.

There's only a few things I consider to be truly against the unwritten rules and this isn't one of them.
