Joe Morgan - shtick? (1 Viewer)

From his chat today:

The name of the game, people always want to forget, for pitchers is wins and losses. If you beat a team 1-0, as he did recently, or 5-4, it doesn't matter. If you win, that goes on the team's side of the victory column. I'm not so much for a guy that has a low ERA and a losing record. That tells me that the other pitcher pitched better than he did, because that team scored more runs.

Logically, he is correct. If you get the loss, you gave up more runs than the other pitcher did. That is absolutely true.

However, his valuation does not account for teams that have better offenses. By his valuation Jason Marquis is better than Tim Lincecum because Marquis has more victories.

Yeah, he's pretty much an idiot.

There's more where that came from.

I imagine his thinking is similar to what makes Dusty Baker a horrible manager.

He does say some dumb things at time, but I still love listening to him doing games.

Honestly, what is there to like about him? He doesn't seem to understand a lot of facets of the game, which leads to a lot of ridiculous/uninformed opinions.

And he adds to that by doing absolutely zero research on the teams playing.

What's funny is Joe Morgan the player was a guy whose numbers look a lot better when viewed sabermetrically. Great OPS for a 2B, especially OBP, and in his best years he was an RC/G monster.

But Joe Morgan the announcer insists we ignore all those silly numbers and focus on stuff like Wins and RBIs, if we have to look at stats at all.

I'm pretty sure you answered your own question with that statement. Shuke appreciates irony.

Yeah, there's the irony. Morgan was one of the smartest players in the game: a patient hitter who could do anything the situation dictated, a very high percentage base stealer, a Gold Glove defender who was never out of position, a manager on the field. But in the booth, he epitomizes old school ignoramus attitudes. I don't know if he's always really held those opinions or if he's just grown old, lazy and set in his ways.

Excellent points.Morgan's '75 and '76 seasons are epic, at any position. His career average is .271 which is only 11 points higher than the league average over that span. I wonder if he hates himself for this. A career OPS+ of 132 is pretty impressive, but I'm positive he has no idea what this is.
