Joe Needs Help-Best Local Writers Covering Teams? (1 Viewer)

Hey Guys,

Need some help from the fans here.

Who is the best writer covering your team?

Please list:

Team, writer, who they write for. If you've got more to say about why you like the person, that's cool too.

And I'll add, you don't necessarily have to live in the NFL town. If you're a die hard Dolphins fan living in Seattle but read every thing Alex Marvez writes, let me know that too.

Thanks.

J

Tom Kowalski, Oakland Press, Detroit Lions. Self proclaimed insider, on the radio alot, I happen to like him the most, because I'm biased and know him personally.

Mike O'hara, Detroit News/Free Press, Detroit Lions. Does an ok job.

Seattle Seahawks

Clare Farnsworth - Seattle PI

clarefarnsworth@seattlepi.com

206-448-8016

Farnsworth is the man when it comes to Seattle football. He's the most "in-touch" with team insiders, and it doesn't hurt that he's a great writer. Very professional and does a good job of being objective.

Cincinnati Bengals

Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com

Former beat writer hired to write for the official team website. Remains prolific, provides the nuts and bolts and plenty of additional profiles and team insight. Also answers e-mails from fans frequently.

Mark Curnutte (Cincinnati Enquirer), Lonnie Wheeler (Cincinnati Post), and Chick Ludwig (Dayton Daily News) are okay as well, but Hobson has them beat in content and volume, IMO.

Thanks Guys. This is exactly what I'm looking for.

Just thought too that if there's a guy in your town that you really don't like, I'd like to hear that too. And say why.

J

Terrence Moore- Falcons- Just awful. Seems to go out of his way to be controversial. He's not the normal Falcons "guy," more an editorialist, but just way out in left field.

Thanks Tecumseh,That's the stuff I need to know too. Lots of towns have the :stirspot: guy and it's good to know those too.

are you making a `beat writer's insider page` on this site now?Vinny Ditrani , the Bergen Record.best Giants info you'll find..

Tom Kowalski, Oakland Press, Detroit Lions. Self proclaimed insider, on the radio alot, I happen to like him the most, because I'm biased and know him personally.

Kowalski is a bit of a shill. He reminds me of Mel Kiper where he'll throw a lot of crap against the wall and then when something sticks he's say "See I told you." Unfortunately there isn't much of an alternative though. Just take his "predictions" with a large grain of salt.

Jean-Jacques Taylor at cowboysplus.com is IMHO the best unbiased writer. He is very reliable, has an outstanding track record, has inside sources and he speaks for the fans.

Mickey Spagnola works for the Cowboys(dallascowboys.com)...................enough said.

:goodposting: Moore injects race into almost every discussion -- Especially when it's completely unwarrented. He's a joke.

Minnesota Vikings

Stay away from Kevin Seifert at the Star-Tribune. He gets scooped on everything by Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I honestly don't know how Seifert still has a job. He misses story after story.

Ken Berger, Newsday, is a long-time Jets beat writer. He tends to be overly optimistic IMO (which is probably saying something).

Chicago:

Of the stuff I read between the Tribune, Sun-Times, ChicagoBears.com, and the Daily Herald, I think the best is Brad Biggs of the Sun-Times.

Not too much competition here in Balto area. Jamison Hensley is solid with the Baltimore Sun and Aaron Wilson does a surprisingly good job for a suburban daily at the Carroll County Times.

I vote Tom Killer Kowalksi for the Lions. He has a handle of what's going on, or at least as much as you can with the Lions.

Although Jason La Canfora seems to do a decent job recently on the Redskins, I don't think he's been covering them very long for the Washington Post. The Washington Times coverage of the Redskins seems to be sporadic.

I'd say the best Redskin writer I've seen is Rich Tandler, who is the guy who figured out and explained in great detail how the Redskins set up and manipulate contracts with their players to stay under the salary cap (remember 2 months ago and how the Redskins "couldn't possibly fit under the cap and would have to start 20 rookies"?).

Rich Tandler's Blog

Redskins.scout.com whom he writes for

rtandler@comcast.net

Detroit Lions-Mike O'Hara Detroit News is very good. On the other side of the spectrum is Tom Kowalski of the Oakland Press. He must get his "scoops" from the equipment managers.

Randy Lange of the Bergen County Record is the most even handed, well informed Jets guy in the NY area, in my opinion. Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News is the resident :stirspot: Jet hater turd.

Aaron Wilson does a surprisingly good job for a suburban daily at the Carroll County Times.
He does the Livestock Prices too!!!j/k ;)
When Paul Daugherty, now a columnist at the Cincinnati Enquirer, passed through Westminster many years ago, I remember him being blown away that he worked in a county that crowned an annual "Pork Queen" at the county fair. Wonder if it still does?

Easy one, Joe!

Pittsburgh Steelers = Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

:towelwave: :towelwave: :towelwave: :towelwave: :towelwave: :towelwave:
I second the  for Ed Bouchette, however, I have to nominate someone else as well.Joe Bendel is covering the Steelers for the Tribune-Review this year. I'm looking forward to this as his coverage of the Pittsburgh Panthers over the past few years has been nothing short of excellent.

As for the :stirspot: guys in Pittsburgh, Ron Cook and Bob Smizik are the ones that seem to always create the most controversy.

Mark Eckel, of the Trenton Times, does a good job with the Eagles but I am sure there are some that will disagree...

Dave Spidaro is the teams lackey mouth piece

New England Patriots

The best is probably Mike Felger, writes for the Boston Herald. The only problem with him is that he's purely a football guy and he somehow he got a year-round radio show that means he has to talk about baseball, of which he knows very little.

But as far as football knowledge and Patriots information, there's no one better.

Seattle Seahawks

For the Seahawks, I would also like to add....Mike Sando - The News Tribune

Mike Sando is entering his ninth season covering the Seahawks and writing NFL columns for The News Tribune. He contributes regularly to USA Today and the affiliated USA Today Sports Weekly, plus KJR-AM 950, Pro Football Weekly, KFFL, Athlon, Lindy's and others. Mike also co-authored Steve Raible's Tales From the Seahawks' Sideline. He lives in the South Sound with his wife and sons.

Disagree. Felger is good, but for the purposes of what Joe is looking for, I'd recommend Mike Reiss at the Boston Globe. His blog, right here, is constantly updated, often several times a day. There is no better source for the day-to-day happenings of the New England Patriots.

For the Chargers, it's probably Kevin Acee (San Diego Union-Tribune) by default. (I don't mean "by default" to have negative connotations. He's generally pretty good. It's just that he has no real competition.)

I'm pretty sure they still do. And if you go to any of the parades on Main Street, most of them still have the "Women of Moose" float. :)

Broncos:

Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News

Connected all over the league, and a great guy overall!
Agree 100%. Without question, Legwold is the best out there. Not only does he have the insider sources, but he also has a very strong understanding of the game of football, and he tends to be pretty patient with all the sensationalistic emails he gets (since he runs the mailback at the RMNews). Also worth mentioning... Adam Schefter is national now, but I refuse to believe that he doesn't still have some of the best insider sources on the Broncos in the league. Everything he writes about the Broncos for NFL.com is pretty much spot on. Also, Bill Williamson of the Denver Post has a pretty good grasp of football, but he doesn't seem to have the sources that Legwold does.

Moose women! We got 'em.

Stl Rams

Jeff Gordon

jgordon@post-dispatch.com

Beat writer for the Stl Post dispatch and on 1380 espn radio for Stl.
Not that Jeff Gordon does a bad job but Jim Thomas of the Post Dispatch is much more informed on a day-to-day basis. Gordon is a columnist with the PD who writes pieces on everything from the Rams, Blues, Cardinals, MU, etc...Thomas is the Rams beat writer. His only job is to write about the Rams and he does a great job with it.

Houston Texas: John McClain, beat writer for the Houston Chronicle (www.chron.com).

Though his regular radio interviews are probably more informative than his columns, if you ask me. I think he's willing to go out further on the limb on the radio than he is in print.

Agreed...also does spots here on Nashville radio as he still has connections to the Titans from their Oiler days.can be heard on www.1045thezone.com. Does regular spots during the afternoon shows between 2 and 6 (Central time)

Patriots:

There are two. Michael Felger of The Boston Herald and Tom Curran of the Providence Journal. They both know their stuff and cover the Pats on a day to day basis. They both tell it like it is (good or bad) and neither has an agenda. I saw Mike Reiss's name mentioned. IMO I like his stuff but he's more of a blogger than a guy who really knows the finer details of the game like Curran. If you're purely looking for info without analysis hed be good. Now that I think of it the guys over at Patriots.com are fantastic as well. Not sure if they qualify as a local writer since they write for the team.

The bottom of the barrel is Ron Borges of the Boston Globe. He's incredibly arrogant and has a huge ax to grind with Belichick and loves to take shots at him whenever he gets a chance. The fact he has been proven wrong so much has made him beside himself and he has lost a ton of respect from many locals.

Dude, you stole my post. :hot: Felger (Boston) and Curran (Providence) are the best.

Ron Borges is a clown who has a vendetta against Belichick, despite the 3 Lombardi's. I'm surprised he still has a job. Kinda like Dan Shaunessey with the Red Sox. I've never seen two more self-important crybabies.

If McClain is the Texans Beat writer, what is Megan Manful's job? As someone stuck tracking Dom Davis & Co last year, I know most in-season injury status reports went under her byline.

Dan Snyder basically hates the Post because they have written a lot of bad stuff about him, especially the columnists like Mike Wilbon, Mr. Tony and Tom Boswell. As a result, he tolerates the Post beat reporters. The Post also has about 3 different people, including a couple of chick reporters, that they assign to the Redskins beat. And since Washington essentially loves the Redskins unreservedly, there isn't a lot of real in-depth reporting from the two big papers.

I agree with Taylor, always seems to be right on.

Philadelphia Eagles

Rich Hoffman

Philadelphia Daily News

Phil Sheridan

Philadelphia Inquirer

Those are the better two in Philly.
