Joe Theismann just said that Randy Moss... (1 Viewer)

C'MON MAN!!!

He said it on the NFLN's "AFC Playbook" show... 40 minutes into the program. It's being replayed at 5pm EST.

That statement is not laughable, but it isn't accurate either. Off the top of my head, these guys have better hands:

Larry Fitzgerald

Anquan Boldin

Andre Johnson

Torry Holt

Antonio Gates

Tony Gonzalez

T.J. Houshamazilli

Reggie Wayne

Steve Smith (CAR)

Want to put him in the Top-10? Fine. But the best? No.

Colston should be on this list.However.... maybe one of the most memorable catches I can recall was Moss hands outstretched, very back right corner of the end zone, catching a deep for-the-helluvit heave from Culpepper (yes this was a while ago now) just running in stride, a ball literally no one else could have caught.....

....on the other hand I've seen him have attention lapses where he just drops easy balls point blank in his hands probably due to attention lapses....

... if inconsistency is part of the equation Moss doesn't belong there.

has there ever been a receiver better at going up for a jump ball and coming down with it?

There have been so many catches where he will have a defender on his arm or even a defender get his hand on the ball and Moss comes down with it. I would say that takes some pretty awesome hands to be able to do.

Does that make him the best? I personally don't think so, but if somebody just watched footage of a bunch of those catches, it is not hard to imagine why they would say that.

Exactly. He got people talking about his comment. That's exactly what Thiesmann is supposed to be doing, and shows once again how good he is at what he does.

If Joe Theismann said that Randy Moss has the best hands in the NFL, that just proves that there are others with better hands.

I don't know how you support claims like that but Moss is in the conversation no doubt. Certain guys are better at catching certain types of passes so who knows.

I personally think Cris Carter is the only guy I would've said had the best hands during his prime... so now someone will come in here with a stat showing how many drops he had.

The bolded are the only ones I'd say have better hands than Moss on this list, and AJ/Gonzalez/Wayne are in the same class with Moss. The only guy I'd conclusively put ahead of him is Larry Fitz.

I've seen some of the catches Moss has made this year and I still think Theisman's pretty dead on with his comment. He's not saying he's the best WR, he's not saying he runs the best routes, he's saying that he has the best hands. What determines "the best hands" is also a matter of opinion. I recall a sideline one handed catch he mades earlier this year that maybe 3 or 4 guys in the league make.

People get all riled up about this comment because it's Moss. But as far as the catches I see him make, what's so crazy about someone saying Moss has the best hands in the NFL?

I'm open to the possibility I have too many guys ahead of him, but it's nothing personal against Randy Moss.He seems to drop more balls that are right in his hands when he's WIDE open than any of the other guys I listed.

He also has the best alligator arms. I have never seen a player cut his route short out of fear of getting hit than Moss.

Terrell Owens is very close.I came to say that Fitz is the best hands guy in the NFL, but several guys already acknowledged him.

Does anyone have access to drops %'s? I know that stat isn't the definitive answer, but it seems like such a discussion has to take it into account.

Yup, but he and T. Owens have the most touchdown catches of all time second only to the "perfect" Jerry Rice.

Imagine how many more TD's Moss and Owens would have if they didn't have aligator arms.

Best hands. Worst attitude towards catching the ball. What a combo.
Agreed, when he wants to play at 100% I honestly think there's never been a better pure talent (hands specifically) but his inconsistent attitudis why he will never get the full respect he could have earned.

I disagree. I don't think he has an inconsistent attitude When his team is good, he gives effort on every play. When his team is bad, he packs it in. Pretty consistent. His entire tenure in Oakland was a wreck because they weren't competing; meanwhile, he was very selfless in gutting out a number of games in Minnesota when he had a bad hammy just to be used as a decoy. He also doesn't pout when he doesn't get the ball, unlike many other big-time guys.Moss doesn't give a strong effort when he feels the situation is hopeless (2000 NFC title game), but he gives his all when the game/season is still in question. A guy like Terrell Owens, on the other hand, will give tons of effort as long as he is getting looks but tends to be less than cordial if he's not a focus of the offense -- regardless of the situation in the game or season. TO will give his all to get 10 catches in a 49-0 blowout, but won't run a crisp route in a must-win playoff game if the QB didn't look his way the past two quarters. Not saying Moss is completely forgivable, but I'd rather a guy like him than a lot of the other guys considered prima donnas.

Surprised no one has mentioned Antonio Bryant. He seems to make one ridiculous catch per week. Don't watch a lot of TB and really am only saying this based on highlights so maybe he drops other balls, but he certainly has a habit of going and getting a lot of jump balls.

Carter was very very solid. Only one guy off the top of my head that I'd rather have in his prime.. and that's Marvin Harrison.

All Carter did was score touchdowns.

:goodposting: beat me to it. I'm surprised no mention of Marshall though I would rank him very high and ahead of alot on the first list mentioned.

Guys say things for shock value all the time. Who's to say Randy Moss has the best hands in the game, it's called an opinion and there isn't a book or a website that will give us the factual answer.

Randy Moss is the best receiver since Jerry Rice, which means he's the 2nd best receiver of all time. So if someone says Randy Moss has the best hands in the game today, then so be it. To me, that's really not going that far out on a limb. Randy Moss is absolutely an outstanding receiver, one of the best football players I've ever seen play the game. Best hands in the game, OK but again it's an opinion.

Highest % of passes caught:

6. Wes Walker, New England (74%)

5. Robert Meachem, New Orleans (76%)

4. Mike Thomas, Jacksonville (76%)

3. Kevin Walter, Houston (76%)

2. David Anderson, Houston (78%)

1. Legedu Naanee, San Diego (89%)

Usually this stat is more indicative of the type of passes thrown to the player, although Meachem doesn't quite fit into that category.

How about that one Moss had at Indy two years ago? (I think it was 2 years ago) Over the middle, ball thrown high and behind him. He reaches up and back with one hand and snares it. Like Inspector Gadget with his reach. Fitz doesn't make that catch.

That was the point I was going to make. Moss definately has great hands. Just because he runs a lot of deep routes doesnt mean his hands arent great.
